to provide a more sustainable chemical

treatment program that is effective and economical for any

    production challenge.

  • Corrosion & Scale are two of the most substantial water-related challenges in production. Scale is the deposition of solids due to partly soluble inorganic salts present in aqueous solutions. These solids can initially form on any surface and will grow unless treated. Scales cause multiple issues, resulting in a loss of productivity. For some fields, scale can lead to the single largest operational costs. Corrosion is the degradation of metals due to electrochemical redox reactions between metals and aqueous species. Dissolved oxygen and acid gases such as CO2 and H2S all contribute to corrosion. These corrosion reactions cause embrittlement and cracking of metals which give rise to circumstances in which failures may occur. Issues such as these need to be anticipated in advance to determine the best treatment actions.

Microorganisms are very small organisms but cause very large problems. Most prominently, they cause microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) and biofilms. In fact, MIC is responsible for 15-30% of failures caused by corrosion across all industries. The micro-organisms of concern for production are sulfate reducers (SRBs), acid-producers (APBs) and heterotrophic, slime forming bacteriva. These bacteria can produce toxic substances like H2S (in the case of SRBs) or corrosive compounds (SRBs and APBs) and when the colonies aggregate, they can deposit on walls of equipment. These sessile bacteria can acclimate to extreme conditions causing localized corrosion and becoming a more severe and persistent issue. Without expertise, these sessile bacteria are extremely challenging and costly to treat.

Paraffins & Asphaltenes are present in crude oils. Problems associated with paraffins and asphaltene precipitation includes increased production costs and decreased productivity due to increased viscosity, blocked flows and process upsets include interruptions and restart ability issues. Removal of these compounds are also challenging. Paraffins, or waxes, consist of long chained alkanes (>C18). As crude oil temperature drops and pressures drop, paraffins precipitate out of solution. Asphaltenes are known as the “cholesterol” of oil and are organic solids which consist of a multitude of polyaromatic structures with aliphatic chains as well as sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and some metals. The vast variety of chemical compositions of asphaltenes makes it difficult to predict deposition problems. Deposition of these compounds occurs when the oil is destabilized by normal production operations. Treatment can be by either inhibiting precipitation or dispersing the already deposited compounds.

Gas problems such as gas hydrate formations and the presence of sour gas are extrusive obstacles in gas productions. Gas hydrates are solids formed from water and small hydrocarbons at lower temperatures and higher pressures which can block flow of fluids. Prevention of hydrates includes chemical treatments to alter either the thermodynamics or kinetics of hydrate formation. Hydrogen sulfide is a very toxic and corrosive gas produced by SRBs that can cause problems both upstream and downstream. Generally, gas streams need to be treated to reduce H2S concentrations to only a few ppm for safety and gas sales specifications.
