MissionThe mission of Broward Housing Solutions is to provide quality housing opportunities to meet the needs of lower income persons with mental illness.

Dear Friends,

We look back on a year of success and ahead to an exciting year of new beginnings.

This past year we truly provided a fi rm foundation for the future of those we served. We provided 174 mental health consumers with homes in our rental housing units and supported 83 consumers with rental subsidies. We also made great strides in the construction of two properties for our Housing Solutions for Young Adults program, which assists those with mental illness who are aging out of foster care.

This year we also launched the Peace of Mind Giving Society, a fundraising program kicked off at a luncheon featuring actress Patty Duke. And we hosted a better-than-ever annual event, “Raising the Roof,” always a highlight of the year.

The bottom line is we accomplished our mission of providing quality housing for lower income persons with mental illness. We did so with the leadership of a strong, professional board, a network of fi ne community volunteers, and a top notch staff.

We also accomplished this through the outstanding leadership of Nancy Merolla, who served as president/CEO of Broward Housing Solutions for seven years and previously as a board member for four years. We thank Nancy for all she did for this organization and wish her the very best in her new position.

We look forward to a bright future as we continue to provide housing – the foundation upon which safe and secure lives are built – for mental health consumers. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stacey LambertDr. Stacey LambertChair, Board of Directors

Highlights

Success Reigns at Broward Housing Solutions’ Fundraisers

This past year saw the launch of the Peace of Mind Giving Society, which offers a myriad of donation opportunities and giving benefi ts, at a wonderful event featuring actress and author Patty Duke. Ms. Duke, the keynote speaker at the elegant luncheon in November, lives with bi-polar disorder and is a strong advocate for the mentally ill. She shared her compelling story with the 357 guests at the luncheon.

The Peace of Mind Giving Society kick-off luncheon was made possible through the support of presenting sponsors LXR Luxury Resorts, Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six Resort & Spa, Bank of America and Eli Lilly & Company. The luncheon took place under the leadership of Honorary Co-Chair Carlos Reyes of Akerman Senterfi tt, Honorary Co-Chair Marcia Barry-Smith of BankAtlantic and Event Chair Sandra Robert.

Broward Housing Solutions hosted a second event in March, which was just as successful. The casual event, featuring a “Raising the Roof” construction theme, was hosted by Honorary Co-Chairs Gene and

Cathy Whiddon of Prudential Florida 1st Realty and Event Chair Barbara Capeletti from Great Florida Bank.

The Raising the Roof event, which attracted more than 350 guests, honored Broward County Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin, Florida Substance Abuse and Mental Health Corporation Secretary Rocky Rodriguez and LXR Luxury Resorts.

Many thanks to all of the supporters of Broward Housing Solutions who ensured the success of these events!

By providing affordable housing, Broward Housing Solutions enables the mental health consumers it serves to build their lives on a strong foundation, allowing them to thrive and live safely in an affordable environment. To accomplish this, Broward Housing Solutions offers the following programs:

Rental Housing ProgramBroward Housing Solutions offers permanent supportive housing to

mental health consumers through its Rental Housing Program to allow clients to live independently throughout Broward County. Permanent supportive housing enables residents to live independently by paying no more than 30 percent of their gross monthly income for rent.

These apartment and townhouse units are located across Broward County and are accessible to public transportation, shopping, employment opportunities and services. Based on the tenant’s housing needs, one, two and three bedroom properties are available in various cities. Affordability is maintained through rental subsidies up to the allowable rent which are supplemented through grants.

Housing Subsidy ProgramBroward Housing Solutions administers a Housing Subsidy Program

in partnership with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) Substance Abuse Mental Health Program Offi ce and the Broward County Human Services Department that assists with housing expenses on several levels:• Emergency Assistance is provided to mental health consumers who

experience a sudden change in their life situation necessitating rental assistance.

• Transitional Assistance is offered for up to four months to individuals who are diligently moving toward fi nancially sustaining themselves without subsidy assistance.

• Long Term Assistance supports mental health consumers who are Broward Housing Solutions’ tenants for an indefi nite period. This help is available to those who can’t support themselves because of their illness or an educational pursuit.

Program Update5

Homeownership SolutionsBroward Housing Solutions offers a lease option purchase program,

called Homeownership Solutions, for low to moderate income residents with mental illness. This housing program enables tenants to lease affordable rental housing from Broward Housing Solutions for up to two years and then qualify for a mortgage and become a homeowner.

With the help of local government and fi nancial institutions, special interest rates and loan guidelines assist these potential homeowners. This program matches qualifi ed borrowers with properties within their price ranges. Broward Housing Solutions raises funds throughout the community to assist residents with down payment assistance, closing costs and renovation funds toward homeownership.

Housing Solutions for Young AdultsHousing Solutions for Young Adults provides housing for young

adults coming out of the foster care system who are recovering from mental illness. Broward Housing Solutions partners with SOS Children’s Villages and Henderson Mental Health Center to provide a solution for these young adults, who in most cases have lived their childhood under the protective care of the state, and at age 18 are required to fend for themselves, typically with no support system. This innovative program is one example of how Broward Housing Solutions executives see a need in the mental health community and work to fi nd a solution.

If I didn’t have my apartment today, I’d be dead or on the street. I’m very grateful for what I have today.

– Katherine, a Broward Housing Solutions resident
