In short, so that our church can serve the community in a significant and meaningful way and experience gratification beyond words. It is incredibly exciting to watch 450 teens and adult leaders from across the country come together with one purpose – to help those in need! Members of our community will come to know these volunteers and share their lives with them. They will shed tears of joy as they watch their home receive a fresh coat of paint, or wipe away tears because a crew came to their home for a week and built them a new wheelchair ramp or deck. They will sleep more comfortably at night knowing that the mobile home skirting that was installed at the base of their home will keep the wind and pests away! A workcamp experience will have a powerful impact on many lives: the residents whose homes will be repaired, the volunteers who help with the details, the businesses, individuals, family and friends who support the event financially, and the worshipping community of Providence who comes together to be the host of an incredible week of service and sacrifice. Thank you, Providence Presbyterian, for your prayers, your support, your patience, and your faithfulness to the gospel which allows us to invite others to come and serve the Lord. From My Open Door Jeffrey S. Bell, Pastor Over Easter vacation I listened to our three-year-

old grandson count from one to 50. We cheered when he got there. And it occurred to me that learning how to count is not necessarily the great thing we make it out to be.  In fact, it may be the beginning of many of our troubles.

Sebastian, with a whole counting career ahead of him, will feel compelled to keep track of countless things (pun intended) during his life.  From his age and how many fingers and toes he has, he will graduate to wins and losses on the baseball field, to his grades and G.P.A., to his daily caloric intake, to who owes him what and how much, to all the offenses he’ll suffer, etc., etc.

No matter what he does in life, he’ll worry about numbers until the day he retires. But even then he won’t retire from counting. He’ll worry about the Stock Market and how much is in his retirement account. Until the day he breathes his last breath, he’ll be busy worrying and counting, counting and worrying.

Here’s the problem with all of the counting we do: beyond occasionally counting our blessings, the exercise of keeping track of the numbers in our lives is seldom an act of faith. We are concerned about the numbers because we depend on them for our sense of accomplishment and self-worth. We keep track so we

can compare ourselves to others. We count because we think we need good numbers to justify ourselves before God.  Truth is, we count out of fear, insecurity, or pride.

We’re like David, whom God warned against taking a census of the nation of Israel because He knew the King’s motives were worldly. God didn’t want David to look to or trust in the numbers. God wanted David, and God wants us, to look to and trust in Him.

By contrast, we only need to be able to count to one. We only need to be able to count On One - the One True God who is worthy of our complete confidence.

When we put our faith where it belongs, we can stop counting the numbers, begin counting on God’s grace, be content with the person God made us to be and with the call He has placed on our heart.

See you in church, Jeff

ASK THE CLERK: WHAT IS THE BOOK OF CHURCH ORDER? This month’s “Ask the Clerk” is very timely. Having received our confirmands into membership on Pentecost Sunday, this is a good opportunity to refresh our memories. The question: "We know what we expect from the church when we join.  What does the church expect of us as members?”  As you might guess, the Book of Order has the answer. Chapter 1 is titled “Congregations and Their Membership” and includes a section on the Ministry of Members. Here’s what it says: Membership in the Church of Jesus Christ is a joy and a privilege. It is also a commitment to participate in Christ's mission. A faithful member bears witness to God's love and grace and promises to be involved responsibly in the ministry of Christ's Church. Such involvement includes:

• proclaiming the good news in word and deed, • taking part in the common life and worship of a congregation, • lifting one another up in prayer, mutual concern, and active support, • studying Scripture and the issues of Christian faith and life, • supporting the ministry of the church through the giving of money, time, and talents, • demonstrating a new quality of life within and through the church, • responding to God's activity in the world through service to others, • living responsibly in the personal, family, vocational, political, cultural, and social relationships of life, • working in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment, • participating in the governing responsibilities of the church, and • reviewing and evaluating regularly the integrity of one's membership, and • reviewing and considering ways in which one's participation in the worship and service of the church may

be increased and made more meaningful. That’s a lot, but I think that of the 12 the two most important for each of us to focus on are the last two. Looking for ways and opportunities to strengthen our membership and participation in the life of the church requires us to reflect on the first 10 as the means to that end. Thanks for asking.

(This feature to our Session notes called “Ask the Clerk” is an opportunity for the congregation to ask questions they might have regarding how the church functions, church policies, or the polity of the Presbyterian Church, USA. Just email your questions to [email protected].)

WORKCAMP VIRGINIA BEACH 2016 Workcamp Virginia Beach begins next month, June 26 through July 2! Currently 72 crews of youth and adult volunteers are scheduled to transform 68 homes through free home repair. Ladders are still needed for Workcamp week. Please sign up on the Workcamp bulletin board to loan your ladder, specifying the size and type. Volunteers will pick up ladders the week prior to Workcamp and return them immediately following the project. Volunteer opportunities available! Youth coming to Workcamp bring donations of food for the local food bank. A coordinator for this effort is needed. Contact Kevin Daley, 572-3977, [email protected] to volunteer. Providence volunteers will greet campers arriving on Sunday, June 26, at noon and will serve snacks on Friday evening, July 1, during a reception for homeowners and campers. Sign up on the Workcamp bulletin board. Volunteers will  meet Sunday, June 5, 12:15pm in  room  104 to review setup the week prior to and the schedule of events throughout the week of Workcamp Virginia Beach.

MISSION TRIP Are you interested in going on a “possible” mission trip to China in 2017 to support Stephanie Webster? If so, make plans to attend a meeting on Sunday, June 12, immediately following worship in the parlor to discuss the possibility and gauge interest.  Questions?  Contact Pat Ferguson, 630-0586 or [email protected].

PARTNER IN EDUCATION It’s hard to believe the school year is winding down.  Lunch Buddies met for the last time in May.  A picnic was planned for the participating students by the “buddies”.  Due to the threat of inclement weather it was held in the cafeteria.  The students enjoyed themselves on the stage and all had a good time.  Reading Café will continue until the end of the school year.  All of our faithful volunteers are commended for the invaluable service they provide by sharing their time and love with children at Fairfield Elementary.  Special relationships have been formed and are so meaningful to both the students and volunteers.  Thank you!

GAD-ABOUTS The Providence Gad-Abouts will have their annual Birthday Party Event at the Imperial Palace Restaurant on Tuesday, June 7. Meet at the church at 11:30am to carpool or meet the group at the restaurant. The cost is $16.00 which covers the buffet, tax, tip and birthday cake. Sign up on the Gad-About bulletin board or contact Peggy Deans, 473-8509 for more information.

MEN’S FELLOWSHIP The Providence Men’s Fellowship will have a cookout on Thursday, June 9 at 6:30pm at Providence.  Bring your own meat to grill; potato and salad will be provided. Sign up on the men’s bulletin board and we encourage you to bring a friend!
