Providence Health & Services

As the third largest not-for-profit health system in the United States, Providence Health & Services is a not-for-profit Catholic health care ministry committed to providing for the needs of the communities it serves – especially for those who are poor and vulnerable. The system’s combined scope of services includes hospitals, physician clinics, senior services, supportive housing and many other health and educational services across Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon and Washington – with its system office located in Renton, Washington.

The cornerstone of the Providence Mission is to provide quality care that is accessible for all – especially those who are poor and vulnerable. In 2013, Providence offered $313 million in charity care so the uninsured and underinsured could access health care. The care Providence delivers reaches out beyond the walls of their hospitals and clinic settings to touch lives in the places where relief, comfort and care are needed. In 2013, Providence provided nearly $951 million in community benefit.

The Providence Health System includes more than 73,000 caregivers (all employees) serving in a diverse range of ministries from birth to end of life, including acute care, physician clinics, long-term and assisted living, palliative and hospice care, home health, supportive housing and education. The Providence Health System has 34 hospitals, 475 physician clinics, 22 long-term care facilities, 19 hospice and home health programs and 693 supportive housing units in 14 locations. Their health plan serves their caregivers and other large employer groups covering 390,000 members. On any given day, they care for more than 1,200 people in their long-term care settings, more than 4,000 in their hospitals and more than 15,000 in their clinic settings. Daily, they serve more than 7,000 people in their many home health and palliative care programs and almost 800 in supportive housing. They touch more than five times as many lives in non-acute settings as they do in the traditional hospital setting.

Providence Health & Services History

Providence Health & Services continues a tradition of caring that the Sisters of Providence began more than 158 years ago. In 1856, Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart and four other Sisters of Providence arrived at Vancouver, in what was then in the Washington Territory, to answer a call for help from a new pioneer community. There were no schools, no established hospitals, and people were struggling to meet basic needs. The sisters responded, always keeping in mind the most poor and vulnerable. Through their courage and determination, they established the first schools, hospitals, orphanages and other institutions of care to serve the new communities. The sisters incorporated their works of charity in 1859, creating the structure for the current network of health care services known as Providence Health & Services. They are the second oldest not-for-profit corporation still in existence in the state of Washington.

The five pioneer sisters faced daunting challenges as they crisscrossed the rugged Northwest wilderness by horseback, stage coach, wagon and river boat

Page 4: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

to the communities, mines and lumber camps begging for provisions and the precious gold dust and nuggets essential to the support of their works of charity. In 1864, four sisters traveled to St. Ignatius, Montana, becoming the first white women to cross eastward over the Rocky Mountains. In just 25 short years, the sisters established 30 hospitals, schools and homes for orphans, the elderly and the sick to serve people across the West.

Her life fulfilled, Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart died in 1902. Her dying words were: “Sisters, whatever concerns the poor is always our affair.” The sisters continued to touch lives where relief, comfort and care were needed and made countless contributions to education, health care and the social services. They established many of the Northwest’s first permanent hospitals and schools. Honoring the legacy of Mother Joseph, her bronze statue sits in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. as Washington State's second representative.

Since these early days, the same pioneering spirit of the sisters continues today as our calling and our promise. Ministries now reach across the full continuum of health care, from birth to end of life, and also serve communities with programs to provide shelter and belonging for seniors with low incomes or people who are disabled. At the core of the Providence Mission remains a commitment to provide for the needs of everyone, especially for those who are the most poor and vulnerable.

Page 9: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

The Integrative Medicine Program offers integrative therapies including yoga, meditation, herbal medications and other complementary treatments proven to be effective in helping cancer patients when used in conjunction with conventional treatments including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Their infusion area, conveniently located within the center, provides a comfortable, soothing environment where the patients are able to watch movies during treatment, if they choose, or request that a volunteer sit with them and keep them company.

The Center also provides a formalized Survivorship Program designed to meet the needs of cancer patients and their families at various points in the cancer experience including before, during and after treatment. "All of their programs provide a continuum of care, including cancer prevention, early detection and treatment of all different kinds," said Dr. Raul Mena, the center's medical director who noted that 1.6 million new cancer patients will be diagnosed this year.

The goal is to continue treating patients in the communities they serve, while providing the advanced levels of cancer care for patients with the most serious cases. Working in partnership with other experts is what Providence does to make sure their patients receive the latest treatments along with their standards for quality and compassionate care. A new partnership with City of Hope, the nationally renowned cancer treatment hospital in Duarte, embodies these Providence goals and is certain to enhance the care we provide. Our physicians are teaming, studying City of Hope protocols and reviewing clinical trials and other options that will be available under this new partnership to patients at our Southern California hospitals. New to Providence is Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica and its famed John Wayne Cancer Institute, providing excellent cancer care to the Westside communities. JWCI is a cancer research institute dedicated to the understanding and curing of through innovative clinical and laboratory research and the education of the next generation of surgical oncologists and scientists.

Radiation Oncology

The Radiation Oncology department of the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center is a truly innovative, state-of-the-art Radiation Oncology facility, equipped with the most cutting edge technology to treat cancer in the San Fernando Valley. The Radiation Oncology team provides an integrated approach to cancer care designed for optimal patient care, comfort, and convenience.

The department offers stereotactic radiotherapy (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), brachytherapy, and Zevalin, as well as 3D-conformal radiotherapy and electron treatment.

The Center is equipped with three new Elekta linear accelerators, two Infinity™ models and one Axesse™ model. The latter enables the delivery of stereotactic radiosurgery to small tumors or lesions in the brain, spine, lung, and liver.

Page 10: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

This equipment also has the ability to perform VMAT, or volumetric modulated arc therapy, which involves multiple revolutions of the machine around the patient delivering the radiation in an arc-like fashion. Both technologies allow for highly focused, precise radiation while minimizing the effect on surrounding healthy tissue.

Our board certified Radiation Oncologists specialize in brain and spinal cord cancer, breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer, gynecologic cancer, head and neck cancer, lymphoma and hematologic cancer, sarcoma, skin cancer, thoracic/lung cancer, and treatment of certain benign conditions with radiation. The Adolescent and Young Adult Program focuses on treatment of cancers occurring between the ages of 19-39 and to provide follow-up care for patients who received cancer treatment as children.

Infusion Center

The Infusion Center at the Disney Family Cancer Center offers a soothing environment and convenient process for chemotherapy treatments. Located on the third floor of the Disney Family Cancer Center, the Infusion Center is flooded with natural light from its many windows. In this calm space, up to eight patients can be treated at a time. In addition to infusion therapy, the Center can administer single injection treatments, such as iron shots and medications to boost blood counts. The Center also treats individuals with autoimmune and other diseases that may be treated with chemotherapy, such as Crohn's Disease.

"At the Disney Family Cancer Center, we try to encompass the art of healing into everything we do," says Sandy Burrows, RN, Clinical Director. "When designing our Infusion Center, we wanted to create a place free of chaos. You check-in directly with us, which takes only minutes. Plus, when you walk in here, it's so peaceful and relaxing. That's how it should be when you are being treated for cancer."

At the Disney Family Cancer Center, we have created an infusion center environment designed to make the experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Our recliners were carefully chosen with comfort in mind. Family members can accompany patients during treatment. Privacy screens are available for those times when a patient is not feeling social. Portable DVD players and a selection of movies offer a welcome distraction. Additionally, patients often bring a book or their own portable music player.

"We also have a group of volunteers who just dote on our patients," Burrows adds. "They are happy to refill your coffee, get you a blanket or offer a hand to hold. It's really such a nice atmosphere. You may feel out of control when you are diagnosed with cancer. Our Infusion Center lets you take a breath, relax and helps you put things back in perspective."

Page 11: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

Integrative Medicine

Complementary therapies proven effective in supporting cancer patients when paired with traditional methods have been incorporated into the comprehensive cancer treatment program at the Disney Family Cancer Center. Providence Saint Joseph's evidence-based Integrative Medicine program, housed on the second floor of the Cancer Center, provides cancer patients access to complementary therapies to help them through their conventional treatments. Among these therapies are acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine and nutritional counseling, yoga, guided imagery, meditation, Tai Chi, therapeutic touch, and Qi Gong - all used in addition to conventional cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Integrative medicine involves the patient in the decision making process and combines complementary and conventional medical therapies into an individualized, evidence-based treatment program. By giving patients access to a broad range of proven therapies, we ultimately give them more control over their own destinies. We also hope to contribute to the increasing body of research on Integrative Medicine and demonstrate that patients using complementary therapies experience improved quality of life and better outcomes compared to patients receiving conventional therapies alone.

Cancer Clinical Trials

The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center has developed a research network that includes the three San Fernando Valley Providence Hospitals (Providence Saint Joseph's, Providence Holy Cross, and Providence Tarzana) and the medical oncologists and hematologists who serve those institutions.

These centers have assembled a team of research nurses, data managers and other critical personnel who have made it possible for physicians in their offices to enroll patients on clinical trials in an efficient and timely manner. One of the major obstacles preventing patients from entering clinical trials is the lack of support services, which then places the brunt of the paperwork and other research requirements on physicians.

Our goal is to improve on the national rate of 3 percent of cancer patients ever participating in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are the basis of all progress in cancer therapy and no new treatment can be developed without the completion of appropriate trials that attest to the efficacy and safety of the new therapeutic agent or procedure. Patients should be assured that involvement in a clinical trial does not compromise their care but rather enhances it by making promising new treatments available to them. In addition, the extra care that patients on trials receive from the research team assures that their care will be of the highest quality.

The National Cancer Institute sponsors some of the larger trials whereas the majority of studies are sponsored by the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. The Cancer Center has access to some of the latest high-quality, advanced clinical trials due to collaborations with leading research institutes, both public and private. It is

Page 12: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

important to emphasize that medical research is now at the point where great strides are being made in deciphering the mysteries that underlie cancer.

In the past year alone, several promising new treatments have been developed for difficult diseases to treat such as melanoma, lung cancer and basal cell carcinomas to name a few. Additionally, researchers are mapping the entire genome of several cancers and the prediction is that this arduous process will become routine in just a few years opening the way for truly personalized medicine.

Genetic Counseling

Genetic counseling is offered by the Disney Family Cancer Center to guide cancer patients and their family members who are concerned that they may be at higher risk for certain cancers because of an inherited gene. For example, the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation are two of the most well known, and substantially increase the risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Our program, led by an expert in cancer and genetics, Ora Karp Gordon, M.D., provides genetic testing, counseling and referral for both patients and family members. Dr. Gordon assists individuals by interpreting their genetic test results and assessing their cancer risk, as well as offering compassionate counseling on options for modifying cancer risk through diet, exercise, surgery and other techniques.

Although the causes of most cancers are unknown, experts estimate that about ten percent of most cancer types are related to inherited genes. People with an inherited cancer-causing gene change, have a 50/50 chance of passing the gene to each of their children.

Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer or ovarian cancer oftentimes question if their daughters or their sisters are at risk, too," says Richard Friedman, M.D., a gynecological oncologist. He points out that Dr. Gordon's genetics expertise now helps his patients - and their families.

The Disney Cancer Center offers staff who can review family histories to help patients and their families understand more about what they might face. That kind of information is crucial in making preventive health decisions. Genetics studies not only answer questions for family members, but can assist physicians in determining the best courses of treatment.

Dr. Gordon also is involved in clinical research, focused mainly on prevention. A large part of her research is related to breast cancer and the BRCA gene mutations, but also includes other hereditary cancers, including some colon, uterine and pancreatic cancers, as well as endocrine tumors.

Personal Appearance Center

Hollywood studios, with their long history of supporting Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, have stepped up again – this time to bring a little glamour to the boutique at the hospital’s Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center. The Personal Appearance Center offers free consultation to patients coping with their appearance changes as a result of the

Page 13: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

different cancer therapies. Offerings include specialized post breast surgery products, quality wigs, beautiful turbans and stylish hats and scarves all to help patients look and feel their best. The Personal Appearance Center staff assists patients with corrective skin care and make-up techniques as well. The personal Appearance Center is on the 2nd level in the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center.

Pain Management

In addition to the concerns that come with having been diagnosed with cancer, many people also have anxiety about the pain associated with cancer. Pain can be a common problem for cancer patients. Pain may be caused by the cancer itself, from diagnostic tests, or from cancer treatments. The medical and technical teams at The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center feel that it's important to take patients' pain seriously and has experts in pain management that can help alleviate and control pain.

It has only been in the last ten to 15 years that pain management has been recognized as an important facet of treatment. Today, medical professionals recognize that pain negatively affects many parts of life, from routine daily tasks such as eating and sleeping, to being able to enjoy family, friends and activities. More importantly, pain can hinder the healing process itself.

Reginald Ajakwe, MD, and Raymond Tatevossian, MD, are board-certified anesthesiologists with fellowship training in Pain Management practice at the Disney Family Cancer Center. Together with the Integrative Medicine Center, they offer numerous programs to help cancer patients manage their pain.

Emerging technology and better understanding of pain mechanisms have provided doctors with improved ability to manage pain. Suffering from pain is an individual experience, which requires a team approach for the most successful of outcomes. At the Disney Family Cancer Center, physicians like Dr. Tatevossian and Dr. Ajakwe, work closely with multiple disciplines in treating the mind, body, and spirit of each patient. In treating the whole person, Dr. Ajakwe adds, "acknowledging a patient's pain and helping manage it is the first step in empowering the patient through recovery."

"We see all types of patients here (Disney) and get them involved in a comprehensive multidisciplinary program focused on improving quality of life," Dr. Tatevossian says. "These may include physical therapy, psychological therapy, acupuncture and eastern therapies such as Qi Gong. Pain management is not just a medication or an injection. We act as the patients' quarterback. We get them involved in our pain rehabilitation programs, and we see progress all the time."

In addition to cancer pain, Dr. Tatevossian and Dr. Ajakwe treat a range of other pain conditions in a wide variety of medical disciplines including orthopedics and neurology.

Palliative Care

The Palliative Care Department at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center assists patients and families who are experiencing serious illness.

Page 14: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

Palliative Care provides comprehensive management of the patient's care, paying careful attention to physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Specializing in the relief of pain, symptoms, and stress of serious illness, palliative care is appropriate at any point during an illness and can be provided alongside curative treatment.

The goal of palliative care is to achieve the best possible quality of life through symptom control, the relief of suffering, and restoration of functional capacity. Palliative care helps patients gain the strength to carry on with daily life, improve their ability to tolerate medical treatments and help better understand their choices for care.

Onsite Pharmacy

The Providence Pharmacy located onsite at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center offers patients a wide range of health and nutritional products in addition to prescription services and over-the-counter medications. Located on the first floor of the Disney Family Cancer Center, patients can stop by while at the center for an appointment. The pharmacy offers nutritional supplements including vitamins, minerals, herbal medicines, and other dietary substances which can be used to help support cancer patients through their chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The supplements chosen for the pharmacy have met specific quality guidelines and have been reviewed by our medical director of Integrative Medicine. With the selection at the onsite pharmacy, patients and family members can find what they need without driving all over town.

The emphasis on healthy products carries into the selection of snack products available for purchase, also recommended by the Integrative Medicine team. These include delicious and healthy snacks such as dried fruit and dark chocolate as well as a variety of healthy drinks.

Oncology Rehabilitation Program

The Oncology Rehabilitation Program at the Disney Family Cancer Center assists cancer patients who are experiencing the side effects or late effects of their cancer or related treatment. These effects are often times a difficult and unavoidable part of cancer treatment and survivorship.

The specially trained team of rehabilitation professionals at the Disney Family Cancer Center help patients deal with the physical impacts their cancer treatment may have caused. Our comprehensive program includes a wide range of therapy services and specialized techniques. With a physician referral, our physical and occupational therapists thoroughly evaluate each patient to determine each individual's particular therapy needs.

Cancer-related fatigue is the most common side effect of cancer and its treatment. Many patients assume it is something they just have to live with, but there are ways to alleviate these symptoms. The Disney Family Cancer Center has created a Cancer Fatigue Program, specifically for cancer patients, designed to combat cancer-related fatigue and other cancer treatment side effects such as issues with balance, limitations with movement, flexibility and strength.

Page 15: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

Cancer-Related Fatigue (CRF) affects about three quarters of the people diagnosed with cancer. Patients experience a sense of tiredness or exhaustion that is related to their cancer and/or its treatment. Medicines are available, but research is also pointing to aerobic exercise as a new tool in the arsenal.

"Often patients don't tell their doctors about fatigue, thinking it's not important. Yet, research has shown that treatment can be helpful, and one of the best ways to address CRF is with aerobic exercise," says Julianne Courtenay, physical therapist, Oncology Rehabilitation, Disney Family Cancer Center.

Treatment for cancer-related fatigue, which is usually covered by insurance, begins with a referral from your doctor. "We start with a comprehensive evaluation by Oncology Rehabilitation Therapist Cheryl Pranskevich to determine your areas of need," Courtenay explains.

In addition to fatigue, some people have issues with their balance or limitations in movement. With a thorough evaluation, our therapists develop customized treatment plans addressing all problems identified and specific concerns of the patient. The overall goal is to improve and enhance each person's quality of life during and after treatment.

The specially designed gym at the Disney Family Cancer Center provides a comfortable place to implement the cancer fatigue treatment. An entire wall of floor-to-ceiling glass looks out on the healing garden. New equipment, special lighting and hardwood floors are featured in the spacious room.

During cancer-related fatigue treatment, patients have one-on-one sessions in the gym with a therapist. Depending on each individual's needs, an exercise program includes focus on strength, balance, flexibility and aerobics. Blood pressure, heart rate and blood oxygen levels are monitored.

The Cancer Fitness Program provides ongoing support for patients once they have completed their cancer-related fatigue treatment and want to continue with an exercise program. Patients can continue an exercise program in the supervised and medically oriented gym at the Disney Family Cancer Center.

Cheryl Pranskevich will again evaluate the patient's needs and create an individualized program. "Our on-site exercise technician assists during your workouts to help ensure that your program is meeting your physical needs," Courtenay says. "For just $8 a session, you have access to all the equipment, including treadmill, elliptical machine, recumbent bike, free weights, exercise bands, medicine balls and more."

THE LOCATION

BURBANK, CALIFORNIA

Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States, 12 miles (19 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The population at the 2010 census was 103,340.

Burbank is a city built by People, Pride, and Progress. These three ingredients turned a tiny, rural town into the thriving community it is today. Billed as the "Media Capital of the World"[8] and located only a few miles northeast of Hollywood, numerous media and entertainment companies are headquartered or have significant production facilities in Burbank, including The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Nickelodeon, NBC, and Insomniac Games. The city is also home to the Bob Hope Airport.

Burbank is located in two distinct areas, with its downtown and civic center nestled on the slopes and foothills that rise to the Verdugo Mountains, and other areas located in flatlands at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley.

In the beginning, the land occupied by the present City of Burbank was part of two large Spanish land grants. The first was the vast Rancho San Rafael, granted to Don Jose Maria Verdugo by the Spanish government in 1798. Nearby, Rancho La Providencia was created following Mexico's successful bid for independence from

Page 17: Providence Director DFCC - Profile

Spain in 1821. The real history of the City, though, began when a New Hampshire dentist headed west with the thousands of other Americans seeking new opportunities.

Dr. David Burbank was active in Los Angeles real estate when he purchased portions of both ranchos in 1867. He combined them into a large ranch where he raised sheep, built a ranch house (on what was later Warner Bros. backlot) and occasionally sold off small plots of land. Realizing that bringing in the railroad would increase the value of his ranch, Dr. Burbank sold the Southern Pacific Railroad a stretch of right-of-way for one dollar.

The first train passed through Burbank on April 5, 1874. During the rate war between the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads, low fares brought people streaming into California and Dr. Burbank once more seized the opportunity. In 1886, he sold his property to a group of land speculators for $250,000 and the Providencia Land, Water and Development Company was formed.

The speculators subdivided the property into a business district, small farms and residential lots. They opened the tract for sale on May 1, 1887, and the town of Burbank was born. The population of the town was 500 when the voters approved incorporation in 1911.

The following years brought marked progress in Burbank's development. In 1917, civic leaders Ralph O. Church and Maurice Spazier convinced Walt Moreland to relocate his truck company to Burbank by offering him a free site to build. The Moreland Truck Company became Burbank's first major industry. For years afterward, the Moreland trucks traveled the highways of the world bearing the label "Made in Burbank." The 1920's saw a period of growth with the population increasing from 2,913 in 1920 to 16,622 in 1930.

Burbank's continued growth was tied to aviation and entertainment. Both industries came to Burbank because of its location and the available space.

Aviation in the mid-1920's was still in its infancy when the Lockheed Aircraft Company purchased a piece of Burbank farmland, near a place called "Turkey's Crossing," and built a plant for the production of its planes. By the time the United States entered World War II, Lockheed had some 94,000 employees producing 19,000 planes. The wartime effort of the aviation industry had pushed Burbank's population to 53,899 in 1943.

The motion picture business also moved to Burbank in the 1920's. First National Pictures bought up a 78-acre site on Olive Avenue near Dark Canyon. The company was soon taken over by another young company founded by four brothers by the name of Warner. On October 23, 1927, motion picture history was made when Warner Bros. released the first all-talking movie, The Jazz Singer, starring Al Jolson. Other companies soon followed. Columbia Pictures purchased property in Burbank as a ranch facility, using it primarily for outdoor filming. Walt Disney's company, which had outgrown its Hollywood quarters, bought 51 acres in Burbank. Disney's million-dollar studio was completed in 1939 on Buena Vista Street.

A post World War II real estate boom left few undeveloped areas in the community. The National Broadcasting Company moved its network television headquarters to its new location at Olive and Alameda avenues. By 1962, NBC's multi-million dollar, state-of the-art complex was completed. As well, on June 28, 1978, the airport was purchased from Lockheed through a Tri-city authority. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport, re-named in 2003 to Bob Hope Airport to commemorate the entertainer's great contributions to Burbank, is the largest privately owned municipal airport in the United States.

In 1989, the Golden Mall was re-opened and traffic again flowed down San Fernando Boulevard after 20 years as an outdoor pedestrian mall. The downtown area was revitalized with a wide variety of restaurants and multi-screen movie theaters. Additionally, when Lockheed announced in 1990 that it would be closing its Burbank operations, the City began efforts to see that the 325 acres were recycled into new development projects.

The City Council also began cable casting their meetings on public television in 1987. The use of public access cable television has expanded citizen participation with government and catapulted Burbank into the 21st Century.

As Burbank entered the 21st Century, the face of the city continued to evolve. The Golden State Area started to change dramatically with Lockheed's announcement in 1990 that it was closing all of its Burbank operations. This opened up 103 acres for potential redevelopment as Lockheed's once busy factories were closed and demolished. After several years of negotiations and environmental cleanup, the B-1 site on Empire Avenue and Victory Place was developed by the Zelman Company into the Burbank Empire Center, a major shopping center complete with Costco, Target, Lowe's and other major stores.

The 2000's also saw changes to City offices and facilities. The site of the original City Hall, and later the Police Services building across from City Hall, was redeveloped into an office building marking the first time since at least 1916 that the property was not used as a government building. The Municipal Services building behind City Hall was demolished in 2001 after suffering damage in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. Several City departments were relocated into existing buildings across from City Hall and portable trailers until the new Community Services building opened in 2008.

Burbank continues to provide a high quality of life for its residents while promoting community engagement, as seen with projects like the Chandler Bike-way, Stough Canyon Nature Center, Robert R. Ovrom Park and a new and expanded state-of-the-art Buena Vista Branch Library. In 2005, Connect with Your Community was established with the mission to create opportunities, projects and partnerships (between residents, non-profits, City employees, etc.) that strengthen the local non-profit and community service agenda. Accordingly, in 2008 and 2010, the City of Burbank was named one of the nation's 100 Best Communities for Young People for its efforts to provide experiential and multi-faceted learning opportunities for its youth.

Expanding upon its community engagement and transparency efforts, while

incorporating emerging technology, the City created and continues to pro-actively implement a comprehensive communications program utilizing various forms of media, including a revamped website launched in 2009. Residents, business owners and visitors can browse the City's website and access up to date information on City and community events, City Council meetings, take advantage of City programs and services, and so on. Additionally, communications with employees, residents and businesses are improved through an electronic newsletter and monthly newsletter mailed with each utility bill.

Presently, Burbank maintains its long standing relationship with Warner Bros. and Disney and is now home to hundreds of media and related support companies such as ABC, Cartoon-Network Studios, Nickelodeon Animation, Yahoo!, Clear Channel, and other post production, film processing, special effects, equipment rental and related businesses. As such, Burbank is happily referred to as the "Media Capital of the World."

Finally, 2011 marked Burbank's Centennial year. The City honored its important birthday with "100 & More Ways to Celebrate Burbank," which included 100 community events for residents and visitors alike with the following mission: Create civic pride, foster and highlight community partnerships, honor the past, celebrate the present, and anticipate the future. In accordance with that mission, on July 8, 2011, the community proudly commemorated the 100th anniversary of its incorporation date with a monumental "Party of the Century" in Downtown Burbank. The celebration was such an exemplary community event that the City was recognized by the California Downtown Association with an Excellence Award in the category of Special Events & Promotions.

Throughout its 100 year history, Burbank has embodied a forward-thinking city that provides a high quality of life and strong sense of community to its residents. In keeping with this tradition, the City will continue to combine 21st century technology with the same small town feel that will make Burbank an ideal place to live, work and play for years to come.
