Proverbs 4 1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. 2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not My law.

Solomon is speaking of himself as an earthly daddy, and David as his daddy,

But the Word of God is our Heavenly Father’s teaching unto us -- His children.

Good Doctrine

Page 3: Proverbs 4a

3

He gives us “good doctrine” about all things.

2 Timothy 3 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

All who live by the Word of God will profit thereby.

Every Word of God.

When God says to do something, it has a purpose and is always a good thing.

Not one of us is smarter than God.No one has a better idea.

No one’s circumstances are outside God’s Wisdom.

His Word is true for every circumstance.

5

When God says “Don’t do something” there is a purpose and it is a bad thing.

So, just “DON’T”.

We won’t always understand, but we don’t have to understand.

To paraphrase Lord Tennyson in “The Charge of the Light Brigade”

“Ours is not to reason why; ours is but to do and die.”

3 For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. 4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain My Words: keep My Commandments, and live.

Godly parents are truly a gift from God.Only a person determined to walk after the carnal nature would resent godly parents.

Deuteronomy 6 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Don’t believe the lie of this world that if parents take their children to church, have prayer and

Bible study at home, and uphold godliness

That their children will rebel against it.

Page 8: Proverbs 4a

8

Rebellion springs from a perverse and rebellious heart that is already inclined unto wickedness.

Rebellion is not caused by godly parents.

It all started with rebellion in the heart.

5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline (to stretch or bend away) from the words of my mouth. 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.

Life is all about the choices we make.“Well, he just made a bad choice.”

As if it were a small thing!Love Wisdom and be blessed.Reject Wisdom and be cursed.

Deuteronomy 30 15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; 16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in His Ways, and to keep His Command-ments and His Statutes and His Judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

We choose what we want with the way we live.

7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her. 9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

Not just lip service to the Wisdom of God;With all thy getting get understanding!
