Dear Parents, ST. VALENTINE’S DAY Historically, St. Valentine served as the Bishop of Terni, a small city in the heart of Italy, during the third century. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than married or engaged men, so he outlawed marriage or engagement for young couples. Realising the injustice of this law, Valentine secretly married young couples. As soon as Claudius found out about Valentine’s activities, he had Valentine jailed and beaten; later he was sentenced to death and beheaded on February 14, 270A.D. THANK YOU Thank you for supporting and attending our Parent Information Night last Monday evening. It was great to welcome so many parents. I would also like to thank the teachers for the time and effort they put into preparing these valuable presentations. If you were unable to attend please see your child’s class teacher in order to obtain the necessary information. Thank you to all the parents who joined us for our “Commencement Mass” on Tuesday. I especially wish to thank Mr. Mark Catanzariti and the teachers for organising such a beautiful liturgy. Also thank you Fr. David Ranson for such a memorable mass to commence the Educational Year of 2020! Thank you to the Year 5 and 6 parents and students for organising a very successful welcome afternoon tea and cake stall. Thank you also to our very generous community for supporting this event. TAKE CARE After the bushfires and the drought we are currently enduring we all welcomed the rain on the weekend. However no one could have predicted the severity of the storms. I heard many of our Prouille Community suffered damage to their homes from flooding, fallen trees and loss of power. I am so happy to hear nobody was physically harmed however the mental stress and toll was enormous. Please take care and if there is anything we can assist you with please do not hesitate to contact us.

ROAD SAFETY Parents can I please remind you to be aware of the road rules and not make U-turns in front of the school during morning drop off and afternoon pick-up procedures. Please do not drive into neighbours’ driveways to turn around. It is imperative that we keep all members of our community safe especially, our children. Please do not exit in the afternoon via the driveway where cars enter and exit as this is very dangerous.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL Monday 17th February is our Swimming Carnival which will be held at Hornsby Aquatic Centre. The Carnival is for students in Years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. The children will commence departing by bus at 9:00am. The Carnival commences at 9:30am. The children will return by bus at 2:00pm. Please join us for a day of good sportsmanship and team spirit.

Go Jennings, O’Brien, Rawlings and Crawford!!!! Thank you to all those parents who offered to help out at the Carnival. All parents who have been allocated a job will be informed.

Parents could you please return your forms indicating your “going home” arrangements for your child/children after the Carnival. Please be aware that once arrangements are made they cannot be changed as it affects our booking for the buses.

P&F GENERAL MEETING Our first P&F Meeting will be held on Thursday 20th February in the School Library @ 7.00pm. Everybody is welcome to attend. Congratulations to all the children who received awards last week Yours sincerely

Dear Parents,

Being new to the Prouille Catholic School and working with the leadership team as Acting Assistant Principal, I’m delighted to have been welcomed so warmly by the school staff, children and parents. The students have returned to school excited and ready for their new classes. Now, into our third week I’m getting to know faces and names and of course am enjoying the beautiful Year One Lyrebird class enormously. I’m looking forward to the year ahead, getting to know the community a little better and importantly working with the staff whilst assisting our principal Sue Bevan in her significant work of leading the school through Whole School Review.

Say hello if you see me around! Ann Milling Assistant Principal

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND PASTORAL CARE NEWS Dear Parents and Friends,

Let me start by saying thank you to all the staff, students and parents for the warm welcome I have received since beginning my role as Religious Education Coordinator at Prouille Catholic Primary School. I look forward to becoming a part of the whole parish community and seeing you all at the many liturgical celebrations we will be celebrating both on Sundays and throughout the school year!

Opening School Mass, Tuesday 11th February. It was wonderful to celebrate our Opening School Mass in the Veritas Hall on Tuesday. Father David, and indeed the whole school staff, were so impressed with the respect and reverence the students displayed in the new sacred space. It was especially pleasing to see the new kindergartens behave impeccably when listening to Father and receiving their blessings. The Year Six leaders also performed admirably w hen receiving their leadership badges from their parents, Ms Bevan and Mrs Milling. We are all quite confident that they will lead the student body with distinction.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Student Representative Council The classes are busy going through different processes of selecting class leaders for the 2020 Student Representative Council. Meetings will take place most Tuesdays to give the students a voice in the direction of the school both inside and outside of the classroom. Student Representatives will receive their badges at the Week 4 Assembly in the Veritas Hall, Friday, 21st February.

BUSHFIRE PANCAKES! - Shrove Tuesday – Tuesday 25th February In Week 5, we will be holding our first fundraiser of the year to aid those affected by the bushfires that have ravaged parts of our great nation. As pancakes are a tradition on Shrove Tuesday, they can be purchased on the day for a gold coin, with all funds going to the Bushfire Relief Fund.

Ash Wednesday – Wednesday 26th February (Week 5) Also in Week 5, we will be initiating our Lent Season as well as our Project Compassion mission. For Years 3-6, classes will be attending Holy Name Church to take part in the 9:15am Parish Mass.

For Years K-2, classes will attend a Liturgy in Veritas Hall at 9:15am.

As always, parents and friends are welcome to join us! If the weather is not conducive to our walk down to the Church, Stages 2 and 3 will join our K-2 Liturgy in Veritas Hall. We will alert parents to this change if it occurs.

Pray as though everything depended on God, Work as though everything depended on you

St Augustine

Warm Regards and God Bless, Mr Mark Catanzariti Religious Education Coordinator (Acting)
