Our unique blend of natural minerals provides
a clean, crisp, refreshing taste revered by
foodies and chefs alike. It was even named
the “Best-Tasting Water in the World” –

Our forefathers were trailblazers – the first to deliver bottled

natural American goodness to the nation ever since.
We’ve been bottling from our natural, single-source spring for
more than 145 years, and our commitment to keeping it natural
has never wavered. We take every step possible to maintain the
wholesome nature of our spring and the wilderness around it.

USLA 2018 NATIONAL LIFEGUARD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competitors, Family, Friends, and Spectators, Welcome to the 2018 United States National Lifesaving Championships! Virginia Beach has it all and offers a fantastic venue for our nation’s elite Lifesaving Sport athletes to showcase their skills. When a lifeguard trains he/she is doing much more than staying in shape. Of the nearly 100,000 rescues made by USLA lifeguards last year, most were made with minimal equipment. Lifeguards rely heavily on exceptional USLA training, mental and emotional fortitude, and their physical abilities. Every rescue is a race against time. That’s where competition comes in. Participating in USLA competitions hones skills used daily by professional lifeguards. Lifesaving Sport is also an opportunity to showcase our skills for the public we protect. National competitors represent the guards they work with at their local beaches. And Junior Lifeguard and U19 competitors represent thousands of junior guards around the nation preparing to be the lifeguards and Lifesaving Sport superstars of tomorrow. Because of all the prevention, training, lifeguard standards, and public education by USLA and its certified agencies, we boast an impressive statistic. Your chances of drowning in a USLA certified agency’s beach are 1 in 18 million. On behalf of the USLA I want to again thank the Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association and the City of Virginia Beach for their hospitality in sharing their beautiful city and beach with us. Also thanks to the sponsors, volunteers, USLA officials, scorers, runners, announcers and local volunteers. Last to my fellow competitors; thank you for making the journey and best of luck in all of your events this week. Lifeguards for Life!

USLA’s 40th
"He would have certainly drowned if not for the prompt action of the life-
saver, who plunged into the waves."That's from a Virginia Beach newspaper story dated 1892. A lifeguard had
saved a swimmer that week.
"...not a single life lost along the mile of
coast...", reads another from 1910.
A headline from 1927 exclaimed
"Danger minimized by constant vigilance of
competent Life Guards."
Rescue Runs Deep
Lifeguards have been part of Virginia Beach since investors first imagined a sprawl-ing resort district along this beautiful stretch of beach where the Atlantic meets the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay. Yet, this idyllic location also brings a perfect storm of powerful currents and northeast winds. From the very beginning of tour-ism a simple truth became clear; without lifeguards, folks were going to die.
The decades have evolved the equipment, the techniques, the uniforms, but that simple truth will never change. Around 65 million tourists will visit American
beaches this year. They will sun, they will swim, and they'll be able to do it safely. That's because of you. Because of the few that understand the power of the ocean, and choose to climb into the chair to put yourselves on the line for others.
As a USLA competitor this weekend, you will do much more than race. You continue an amazing tradition; a Surf & Rescue history that runs deep, indeed.
The Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum, at 24th Street on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, honors, celebrates, and preserves the rescue history of Virginia Beach. Free admission is available to all USLA participants.

v USLA Junior Guard programs are one of the most important public education programs and recruiting tools for USLA Chapters. Junior guard programs are meant to provide an active and safe ocean environment for participants to build self-esteem, learn to work as a team and gain valuable knowledge of the ocean and its hazards. Many of the JGs at the National Lifeguard Championships and more back home are future lifesavers ready to take the stand when eligible!
v USLA U19 Competitors are a mix of Junior Guard and working lifeguards. International Lifesaving competitions often include U19 tournaments and the USLA will field a team of the top U19 competi-tors to take on the world’s best in Adelaide, Austra-lia at the 2018 World Lifesaving Championships.
v Race schedule subject to change at official’s dis-cretion due to safety concerns, logistics, or weath-er and ocean conditions.
v Junior Lifeguard coordinators are responsible for all entries and conduct of their Junior Lifeguards.

United States Lifesaving Association Lifeguard Competition - Rules and Operational Procedures
A competitor may otherwise use his or her body to improve his or her position in obtaining a flag. A competitor may negotiate the shoulder and or body in front of an opponent, but may not use hands, arms, feet or legs to obtain or remain in this position.
If a competitor legally obtains this front position and maintains normal running action, the competitor behind is obliged to go around the competitor in front.
A competitor may cross over in front of a slower competitor. If two or more competitors are guilty of deliberate impedance, the competitor who first used hands, arms, feet or legs will be disqualified.
BEACH FLAGS Event description
From a prone starting position on the beach, competitors rise, turn and race to obtain a baton (beach flag) buried upright in the sand approxi-mately 20 meters away. Since there are always fewer batons than competitors, those who fail to obtain a baton are eliminated.
