Welcome from the IETF Chair Welcome to IETF 85 in Atlanta! The IETF seems to return to Atlanta every ten years. The IETF met in Atlanta for IETF 55 in 2002 and IETF 21 in 1991. I’m looking forward to collaborating with many talented and enthusiastic people throughout the week. The North American Cable Industry is the host for IETF 85. They have arranged an exciting social event on Tuesday evening at the Georgia Dome. Comcast is sponsoring the network connectivity. Many other members of the cable industry are sponsors, including Comcast and Time Warner Cable, who are Platinum sponsors. Many thanks to our host and sponsors; we could not have a quality meeting without your help. The second Bits-N-Bites event will take place on Thursday evening. The event is modeled after NANOG “Beer and Gear.” It includes exhibitor tables, plus food and drink. Of course, attendance is optional, but all of the people that went in Vancouver had a good time. The goals for the Bits-N-Bites include:

• Build new source of revenue for the IETF • Get vendor/service provider information • Socialize and have fun

The Nominations Committee (NomCom) is working to fill the leadership positions for terms starting in March 2013. NomCom is using an open list of willing nominees, and you can find the list at https://www.ietf.org/group/nomcom/2012/input/. Please provide feedback on these nominees. Please talk to the NomCom members; they have orange dots on their badges. I want to remind all IETF participants that a new blue sheet policy was put in to practice at IETF 84. We are no longer collecting email addresses on blue sheets; instead, we are collecting organization affiliation to discriminate between multiple people with the same name. We are scanning the blue sheets and including the images in the proceedings for the WG session, and then discarding the paper blue sheets after scanning. The EDU Team is looking for additional people to help coordinate tutorial sessions and training for working group chairs. You do not have to teach to help. Please contact me if you are interested in the EDU Team. I look forward to your participation this week, and I look forward to seeing you at IETF 86 in Orlando, Florida, USA on 10-15 March 2013. Thanks for all you do for the Internet!

Russ Housley IETF Chair
