The Garden features many statues including composers Dvorak and Smetana, bishop and
educator Komensky – known as the “father of modern education”, and statue of T.G. Masaryk
founder and first president of Czechoslovakia. The statues were made by Frank Jirouch, a Cleveland
born sculptor of Czech descent. Many thanks to the Victor Ptak family for financial support!

Welcome all of the One World Day visitors to the German Garden
of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens
The German American National congress, also known as DANK (Deutsch Amerikan-ischer National Kongress), is the largest organization of Americans of Germanic descent.
We have had a very busy past year sponsoring bus trips to Toledo for the German-American Fest, and Pittsburgh for Christkindlesmarkt, and Milwaukee for German Fest. Our German Meet Up group is up and running. The German Garden & Cultural Founda-
tion is now the official sponsor of the German Garden.
The German Garden and Cultural Foundation of Cleveland was formed and incorporated at the end of 2017 as a 501(c)3 Foundation. We are looking for volunteers to help us out
in maintaining the garden.

The Centennial Peace Plaza is underway; join us in the effort to enhance our Cultural Gardens
As you pass by the CCGF kiosk, the center point of Martin Luther King Boulevard, you will notice on this One World Day a construction site. Perhaps not beautiful now, it’s a source of great pride to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation.
That is the site of what promises to be a spectacular Centennial Peace Plaza.
The idea for the Peace Plaza was born in 2016, the centennial anniversary of the Cultural Gardens. That’s when board members decided the anniversary should be marked by an honoring of the past and a launch into the future.
The Federation embarked on a campaign to build a central gathering space to serve as a main stage for One World Day and a performance
space for education and arts and culture events from spring through fall.
The circular plaza will be 100-feet in diameter and feature a prominent stage and amphitheater seating. It will be eco-friendly with permeable pavers to reduce stormwater runoff.
As you can see, the project’s first phase is well underway, and our capital campaign has exceeded our expectations. We are raising funds for phase two, which will include an entranceway and aesthetic enhancements, as well as landscaping and reserves for ongoing maintenance.
Our dream is for the plaza to draw residents from the neighborhood, city, region, state, country and the world to the Cultural Gardens to hear music, revel in a dance performance, take part in an educational forum, and enjoy even more this beautiful treasure in the heart of Cleveland. We are on our way to becoming a bigger and better destination spot.
Please join us in this effort. For information on how to donate, call 216-220-3075.

74th Annual One World Daywww.ClevelandOneWorldDay.org
Dear friends of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens:
Welcome to One World Day 2019. As board president of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation, it is my honor to greet you as we celebrate the many cultures of Northeast Ohio.
This is our 74th consecutive One World Day, making it one of the oldest continuously running events in the city of Cleveland. Of that, we are very proud.
This is a colorful, warm, energetic and entertaining event for the entire family. We hope you enjoy the Parade of Flags, the naturalization ceremony for new citizens of the United States, and music, food and dance in the individual gardens. Our many gardens have prepared lively activities for you; come learn about these cultures and enjoy. We also have a Children’s Village that is sure to entertain the whole family.
One World Day also is a time to thank the ethnic and cultural communities who devote their time and resources to building, maintaining and growing their Cultural Gardens. They are the foundation of our organization and make Rockefeller Park the treasure that it is.
Thank you to Johnny Wu, our producer, and the entire One World Day team of coordinators, including Sheila Crawford, Angela Shute Woodson, Tom Turkaly, Oahn Loi-Powell, Asim Datta, Dan Hanson and Laura Tereshko. This day also wouldn’t be possible without the scores of volunteers who help us with a multitude of tasks.
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are a source of great pride for Cleveland, our region and the nation. There is nothing like this park in the entire United States or the world. It is a gem and we want it to be a vital part of Cleveland’s renaissance.
While you are here, please check out the site of our Centennial Peace Plaza, now under construction. Slated to be a vital part of next year’s One World Day, the plaza will be a circular gathering area with a stage and amphitheater seating. We invite you to join us in our capital campaign for phase two of this project; you can do so by calling 216-220-3075.
The Gardens are vibrant and growing. Please join us in that growth. Come to the Cultural Gardens on a regular basis; enjoy this beautiful park and spread the word to your friends and family.
Have a great One World Day! Thanks for coming.

THE SERBIAN GARDEN WELCOMES YOU TO ONE WORLD DAY!
The Serbian Cultural Garden, which was dedicated on October 5, 2008, was inspired by the people and land of Serbia. A gently curving path winds through the Garden's mature beech and oak trees. The central plaza, which includes a symbolic cube of a Serbian crest, also features a raised circular concrete seating area inscribed with the motto, "Only Unity Saves the Serbs”. The plaza also includes a bronze icon of Saint Sava.
Small terraces provide places to rest throughout the Serbian Cultural Garden, each one centered on a great figure from Serbia's past. The garden has busts featuring: King Peter I, liberator of the Serbian people; Mihajlo Pupin, extraordinary scientist; poet Petar Petrović Njegoš, an Orthodox Prince-Bishop and ruler of Montenegro; Stevan Mokranjac, composer; Vuk Karadzić, author of the first Serbian dictionary and chronicler of Serbian folklore; Nikola Tesla, inventor and genius; Mileva Marić, brilliant Serbian physicist and mathematician and wife of Albert Einstein; Milutin Milanković, renowned astrophysicist; and Nadežda Petrović, a Serbian painter from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and considered Serbia's most famous impressionist and fauvist.

About the Cleveland Cultural GardensThe Cleveland Cultural Gardens are one of Northeast Ohio’s true treasures, a mirror of its proud multicultural past, present and future.
The Gardens are part of Rockefeller Park, land donated to the city of Cleveland by industrial magnate John D. Rockefeller in 1896. The idea for an outdoor cultural oasis was launched in 1916, when Shakespeare enthusiast and publisher Leo Weidenthal developed a place to honor the bard in what is now known as the British Cultural Garden.
The civic activist, along with elected officials and other commu-nity leaders, saw the many immigrant groups who were arriving in Cleveland in the early 20th century, and envisioned other gardens that could pay tribute to different cultures.
The Hebrew Cultural Garden was established in 1926 by the growing Jewish community in the Glenville and other east-side neighborhoods. Other early gardens were predominantly European (Italian, Hungarian, Polish, German, Irish, for example) an expression of the immigrant groups coming to Cleveland then.
The early gardens were helped along by the federal government’s jobs program, the Works Progress Adminis-tration, during the Great Depression. The WPA employed stone cutters and other immigrant laborers to build the intricate gardens that stretch from East Boulevard down to Martin Luther King Boulevard.
As the decades passed, immigration patterns changed and so did the gardens. From WWII to the present, gardens from the Baltic States, the Middle East, Asia and Africa have been created, along with an African-American Cultural Garden.
As of mid-2019, some 31 gardens have been officially dedicated, and many more are in development, includ-ing a Native American Garden, and gardens from Pakistan, Colombia, Uzbekistan, Korea and Vietnam.
More than 70 statues honoring the likes of Gandhi, Nikolai Tesla, Marie Curie, Bach, Goethe, Chopin, Mother Teresa and many others adorn the Cultural Gardens and there are many more to come.
Each of the gardens is cared for by non-profit sponsoring orga-nizations, typically an ethnic organization, cultural association, museum or church. Driven by love of their heritage, hundreds of volunteers from these groups dedicate time, talent and treasure tending to the flowers, weeding, and raising significant funds for monuments, repairs and maintenance in their gardens.
The non-profit Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation is the umbrella group that approves the creation of new gardens, promotes and advocates for them and is a liaison to the city and other partnering institutions. The CCGF carries on the vision that Weidenthal and so many others had more than 100 years ago and one that is so critical today – that cultures of the world should learn about and celebrate each other. The mission of the Gardens, peace through mutual understanding, remains.

A MESSAGE TO YOUNG AMERICANS OF SYRIAN ORIGINBy KHALIL GIBRAN (1919)
I believe in you, and I believe in your destiny. I believe that you are contributors to this new civilization.
I believe that you have inherited from your forefathers an ancient dream, a song, a prophecy, which you can proudly lay as a gift of gratitude upon the lap of America. … I believe that you can say to Emerson and Whitman and James, “In my veins runs the blood of the poets and wise men of old, and it is my desire to come to you
and receive, but I shall not come with empty hands.
…It is to stand before the towers of New York, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco saying in your heart, “I am the descendant of a people that built Damascus, and Byblos, Tyre and Sidon and Antioch, and now I am here to build with you, and
with a will.”
It is to be proud of being an American, but it is also to be proud that your fathers and mothers came from a land upon which God laid His gracious hand and raised
His messengers.
Young Americans of Syrian origin, I believe in you!
