Turn to page 5 to find out more Chaldon Road becomes impassable to pedestrians and traffic following the downpour. “Biblical” downpour brings chaos to Caterham On Tuesday 7th June at approxi- mately 2pm, an hour-long torren- tial downpour took place over Caterham, causing chaos for traf- fic, homeowners and many local businesses. Rainwater tanks, storm drains and culverts could not cope with the intensity of the rainfall, which quickly flooded local roads and caused devastation for many local residents. Affected residents were quick to express their frustration and anger that culverts and water storage tanks were found to be blocked with silt, saplings and concrete due to insufficient main- tenance. In Money Road, neighbours had to smash the window of Christine Hull’s home to rescue her dog that was drowning. In Chaldon Road, elderly residents had to leave Hill- croft Court as rainwater started to enter the ground floor. Christine Hull, who has had to move into her nearby mother’s house with her family until they move into long-term, temporary accommodation, said: “My living room was under 92cms of water and if it had not been for the neigh- bours breaking into the house to rescue the dog and open the back door to release the water, I think the rest of the house would have been under a similar amount. As it was, the remainder of the ground floor was under a little under a foot of rain. It has caused a huge loss of personal items which can never be replaced and that's the heartbreak- ing bit. I really hope that action will now be taken by the council to help the residents affected and prevent an incident like this from ever hap- pening again.” On Monday 13th June, the National Flood Forum Trailer came to Cater- ham to offer help and advice to the local residents affected by the flooding. Local councillors and rep- resentatives from other agencies were present to listen to residents’ concerns. The August edition of The Caterham and District Inde- pendent will feature a special report on the aftermath of the floods and an update on those who have had to move out of their flooded homes. Our sister edition

is launched! This month sees the launchof our sister edition, TheWarlingham and District In-dependent. It was suggested to me sometime ago that Warlingham resi-dents may like to receive a War-lingham edition of The Caterhamand District Independent news-paper. Then, last month, thestrength of the community spiritin Warlingham was demon-strated by its residents when wecovered the story of the possibleclosure of Manor Park Garage. Itwas lovely to see so many peopleget along to our photocall outsidethe garage and prompted us tolaunch a Warlingham edition ofthe newspaper. From this month there will be7,000 copies of the Warlinghamedition of the paper delivered tothe residents of Warlingham,Hamsey Green, Farleigh,Chelsham and Whyteleafe and19,000 copies of the Caterhamedition will be delivered to theresidents of Caterham, God-stone, Kenley, Chaldon, Netherneand Old Coulsdon. All the advertisements will bepublished in both editions. Julia Church, Editor.

Diary of a

Plantaholicby Sue Baines

Sue Baines.

With a plentiful supply of sunand rain in June, the growingseason is in full swing. Un-fortunately the rain is oftenaccompanied by strongwinds, which wreak havoceven though I think I havesupported everything withmy chicken wire cages, smallgreen wire fences and a fewemergency supports thatGeoff has made out of build-ing rods. These are reallysturdy and are in the shapeof a semi circle with “legs”either side. He has madethem in varying heights, andthey have been so handy. My delphiniums are maturingnicely, but are quite soft. Ideliberately don’t feed themuntil the flowers are show-ing, and then they will get acouple of feeds with tomatofeed, which helps to makethem sturdier, and is great toencourage flowering on allfruit and flowers. However,as delphiniums get to overeight feet most years, theyinevitably get damaged, de-spite my best efforts.

I love to just walk down thegarden at this time of year, and assess what needs doingto get the best from myplants. Most of the springbulbs are finished now, anda good many have died rightback. If they are still show-ing green, they will get theirfinal feed. Most are in pots,so that I can remove the soiland store the dry bulbs inmy shoe hangers in thegarage, where the dahliaswere last winter. Many of thespaces vacated by the bulbsin the garden will be filledwith the dahlias which arejust showing bud, and beingfed almost weekly whentime and weather allow.Hopefully their gorgeousflowers will light up the bor-ders right up until the frostcuts them back next winter.

Tim’s Pastry Club launches extra

classes due to popular demandby Julia Church

Due to popular demand, localaward-winning patissier andchocolatier, Tim Fisher, will bedoubling the number of pas-try classes he holds on Satur-days at the Oasis AcademyCoulsdon. From September there will bean afternoon class from1.15pm-3.45pm in addition tothe morning class which takesplace from 10.15am-12.45pm.Tim said: “I originally set upthe Pastry Club because thereis no longer an Adult EducationCentre in Caterham wherepeople can sign up for cookeryclasses. The beauty of startingup my own class is that I donot have to keep to a syllabus- I can teach what I want toteach each week.”In 2012 Tim had a seriousaccident whilst at work, which prevented him fromworking for 18 months. Fol-lowing months of physio-therapy, Tim returned towork last year. In March thisyear Tim won a gold award

for Best in Class and a spe-cial award for the Best Pas-try Exhibit at the BritishOpen Cookery Champi-onships, which proved tohim that he can “still do it!”I can personally vouch forthe fact that Tim’s cakes areaward-winning! I recentlyhad the pleasure of samplinga mouthwatering ChocolateBrownie made by Tim, and awonderful Chocolate Hazel-nut Delice that had a soft, creamy chocolate filling withthe added texture of crunchywafer. His awards are well-deserved indeed. For more information about

Tim with the ChocolateHazelnut Delice.

of Tandridge now have thefirst draft of their own, de-tailed Neighbourhood Plan forthe area ready to read andrespond to. The Neighbourhood Plan setsout the local issues andneeds identified by the volun-teers, who are known as theCR3 Forum, during thecourse of their research overthe last four years. Once of-ficially adopted, the Neigh-bourhood Plan will becomepart of Tandridge District

Council’s set of policies thatare used to make planningdecisions in the area, givingthe CR3 community a signifi-cant role in future planningand decision making for thearea. The only other area ofTandridge to have produced aNeigbourhood Plan is Wold-ingham. FIRST CONSULTATIONFREE!

Warlingham residents showing their support for Manor Park Garage,

which is threatened with closure if planning permission is granted

for a block of flats to go on the site.

Warlingham residents rally

to save popular local garageA scheme to demolish Manor

Park Garage in Westhall Road,

Warlingham, and replace it

with a block of flats is being

strenuously opposed by local

residents who do not want to

see the closure of their popular

local garage. The planning application sub-

mitted to Tandridge District

Council by the Trademark

Group is for the “Demolition

of the garage and erection of

a three storey apartment

building containing 14 resi-

dential units with associated

landscaping and car parking

for 16 vehicles.”

If planning permission is

granted, the owners of Manor

Park Garage, which has occu-

pied the site for 34 years, will

have three months’ notice to

vacate the premises and re-

open for business elsewhere.

However, with the loss of so

much commercial land in

Tandridge in recent years to

accommodate residential de-

velopments, it is highly un-

likely the owners will find

anywhere suitable in the area

to relocate to. At a Planning Meeting of

Warlingham Parish Council

held on Tuesday 10th May,

Warlingham resident, Debbie

Miles, expressed her concern

about the proposed new devel-

opment, saying: “I believe the

new development will be out of

character and not in keeping

with the village. Manor Park

Garage contributes to the local

economy and is an employer of

six staff, whose jobs will be lost

if the development is ap-

proved. It has been proven

that the site is not unsatisfac-

tory as a commercial site as

businesses have been thriving

there for over 60 years.”Warlingham Parish Council

have submitted a formal objec-

tion to the planning application,

details of which will be available

to view on their website at

www.warlinghampc.org.uk.

The Whyteleafe Review by Julia Church

For a full English breakfast, ajuicy burger and chips, or aperfect pizza prepared withultra-fresh dough, TheWhyteleafe is great for a sat-isfying meal at any time of theday. Open from 9am for break-fast, right up until 11pm fora late night treat, customersalways receive a warm wel-come from the owner,Kamal, and fast, efficientservice. There are a limited number oftables inside The Whyteleafefor diners to relax and enjoy ameal or coffee break. Alter-natively, many customers optfor the shop’s excellent freedelivery service, which is es-pecially popular with local of-fice workers. I popped in there for lunch re-cently with my young friendGeorge, who was very peck-ish, having skipped breakfastthat morning. We both ordered a medium

pizza, and George also or-dered the Chicken Dippers.George chose the ‘ButcherBlock’ pizza with a topping ofbacon, sausage, pepperoni, salami and ground beef, whileI chose the Garden Supremewith green peppers, mush-rooms, red onions, sweetcornand fresh tomatoes. Both pizzas had very gener-ous toppings, were perfectlycooked and very filling.George demolished his eightChicken Dippers with gusto, before starting on his pizza.Suffice to say, neither of uscould finish our pizzas so wetook the rest away in boxesfor later. We made a mentalnote to come back for the full

English breakfast soon, whichsounds excellent value at£4.49 for the small version(egg, bacon sausage, hashbrown, mushroom, grilledtomato/baked beans andcoffee) or £6.49 for large(double egg, double sausage,

two strips of bacon, mush-room, grilled tomato/bakedbeans, two hash browns andtea/coffee). Needless to say,

Kamal assured me hecould rustle up a deli-cious vegetarian versionfor me!
