Principal’s MessageDear Parents and Carers,
As the days are getting cooler and it is getting harder to get out of our lovely warm beds each morning, it is really important that your child comes to school each day. School absenteeism and truancy can impact significantly on students’ learning and wellbeing.
Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.
Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and attends school on all school days unless there is a reasonable excuse. As a school, we must monitor attendance of students and follow up with parents and caregivers any unexplained absences. Please call Proston State School office on 4169 4333 to leave a message or to speak to the admin ladies, if your child is sick or unable to attend school.
If your child does not want to go to school, or is missing school without you knowing, contact the school immediately for assistance and support.
At Proston State School we will: • monitor student attendance • notify you if your child has an unexplained absence as soon as practicable on the day of your child’s absence via a text message and continue to follow-up with you as practicable via a phone call• use effective teaching strategies to engage your child in learning • help you with strategies to encourage your child to go to school • provide support for families.
Thank you to all those parents who are sending their children to school or letting us know why their child is missing school. We appreciate your support.
Kind regards, Mrs Sue Hendriks

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)This week students have been unpacking bullying; identifying what is the definition of bullying, types of bullying that can occur, signs of bullying and strategies to deal with it and people to get support from. It can be distressing to learn that your child is being bullied. You need to consider what you know about your child and the details of the situation to make the best decision for your child. Different approaches and strategies may be necessary for various situations and individual children. It also needs to be established that it is a case of bullying and not a reciprocal conflict between peers. Let your child know that you take the bullying seriously and that you can help them to report it to the school.Remember to;• Stay calm and positive• Discuss and practice strategies for face-to-face bullying• Do not advise your child to fight with the other child• Discuss strategies for online bullying• Seek help for your child to learn about dealing with bullying• Report the bullying to the school and work with staff to resolve

Students of the Week
A message from our Head of CurriculumI am delighted to invite all students to join in the 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge.
Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities. Last year, Queensland students read a total of 2.46 million books during the challenge! Monday 3rd June marks the beginning of the challenge. • Prep to Year 2 are aiming to read or experience at least 20 books,• Years 3 and 4 are aiming to read at least 20 books, and • Years 5 to 9 are aiming to read at least 15 books. Students will have the opportunity to win individual book prizes for those who read the most books in their class and there will be a pizza party for the class who has the highest percentage of students read the targeted number of books (or more) by the end of the challenge on Friday 23rd August.
You can play a big part in your children’s future by encouraging them to be part of this positive initiative. Liz Gundry Head of Curriculum

Year 9 and 10 English
Year 9 and 10 Algebra
The Year 9 and 10 English students are enjoying the units of work they are studying this term. Year 9 have been exploring Speculative Fiction and the Year 10 class are reading ‘The Outsiders’. Both groups have joined in with enthusiasm and have been keen to learn. Our literacy groups are reading with enthusiasm and have been excited to take home ‘own choice’ books as well as their home readers each night.Peta Clarke, Year 10 Form and Secondary Teacher
Our Year 9 and 10 students have been learning all about Algebra. They are showing consistent improvement and have been practicing a Growth Mindset. Students have been encouraged to be patient with themselves and learn in steps. We are looking forward to the weeks ahead as we head toward mastery. Ask your child to solve this problem with you! 4x + 6 = -10
Tate Smith, Year 8 Form and Secondary Teacher
Year 7/8 DramaIt has been a very busy term for our Year 7 and 8 students in Drama. We began by selecting roles out of a class script and practicing a range of improvisation skills to improve our acting craft. Just last week we began to prepare our costuming and stage props, and beginning this week, we are taking turns at stage direction and blocking out scenes (arranging who is where and at what time). Overall, it has been an interesting journey and we are on track to present our performances at the end of term.

Chappy’s Chat
It has been a busy, but fun packed Term 2 for me as Chappy at Proston State School. We had some fun visitors come to school in Week 4 to help celebrate the completion of NAPLAN week. They were a team from YWAM, which is an international organisation that trains youth to be of service to the community. They organised a day of sports and craft activities and shared stories about the countries where they live. Students especially enjoyed chatting, the inflatable soccer, kazoo making and the balloon tag game. A great day was had by all.
Then on the weekend, I helped run a stall at the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival to fundraise for school chaplaincy. This allows our local Chappies to be in their schools for more hours. We marched in the Pumpkin Parade where we handed out hundreds of balloons to kids and blew up hundreds more at our stall to give away. Thank you to our wonderful helpers.
