Letter from the President

Dear Colleagues,

Can you believe how much has changed since we convened at the 2016 Assets Learning Conference? As we kick off the 2018 Prosperity Summit, we welcome you to a conference with a new name and a new location. However, our purpose remains the same: helping everyone build financial stability, wealth and prosperity.

The Prosperity Summit offers something for all attendees—no matter how long you have been engaged in this work. The conference showcases three days of interactive sessions with leaders in the field; four dozen breakout sessions structured to display new ideas; nine intensive clinics that help practitioners build capacity; and advocacy visits to Capitol Hill. The Summit is intentionally designed to be as inclusive as possible, connecting advocates, researchers and practitioners from a variety of industries with policymakers, philanthropists, lenders and investors who share the belief that everyone should have the chance to thrive.

Our five plenary sessions build upon the topics, practices and policies raised up in clinics and concurrent sessions, with the aim of addressing wealth inequality, advancing racial equity and inspiring each other to affirm that change is possible in these complex and challenging times. I am deeply grateful for the invaluable contributions of the participants, generous sponsors, moderators and speakers who have made the Summit possible.

To make the most of your time at the Summit, don’t forget to download the Prosperity Summit app via CrowdCompass AttendeeHub from the App Store or Google Play! With this app, you’ll be able to stay informed with real-time notifications, connect with other Summit attendees, and weigh in by completing surveys that help us deliver engaging content at future events.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during our time together. Have a wonderful time!

Andrea Levere, President, Prosperity Now

An Inclusive Prosperity Summit:Services for Attendees with Disabilities

Once again, we’ve partnered with the World Institute on Disability to make the Summit fully accessible to our friends with disabilities.

With generous support from JPMorgan Chase & Co., the World Institute on Disability has advised Prosperity Now on making the Prosperity Summit as accessible as possible, so we can better include our colleagues with disabilities. If there are any accommodations we can make to facilitate your full participation in the Summit, we encourage you to visit our Disability Concierge, located on the main ballroom level.

We’ve worked to make the Summit more inclusive this year by:

Integrating captioning technology during plenaries and select concurrent sessions.

Making sign language interpreters and sighted guides available to attendees for concurrent sessions, workshops and other programming.

Providing our slate of 200+ speakers with tips for ensuring their presentations are inclusive and accessible.

Offering wheelchair-accessible transportation during Capitol Hill Visits to ensure federal lawmakers can hear from all voices at the Summit.

Designing communications tools and materials (including the program book, Mobile App, signage and more) that are optimized for viewing by attendees with visual impairments.

Stationing a Disability Concierge (available on the main ballroom level) to help attendees with disabilities navigate their Summit experience.

Prosperity Now extends our gratitude to the World Institute on Disability for helping us make the Summit as inclusive as possible!

Friday Breakfast Plenary

Setting the TableFriday, September 7 | 9-10:30 am | Maryland Ballroom Addressing the financial insecurity facing people in America today requires all of us, in every sector, to work together. It requires dialogue and partnership across the spectrum—from large companies to everyday entrepreneurs, from public sector actors, and from philanthropy and nonprofits. How do we begin to re-set the table for everyone to come together around a common vision? How does our notion of partnership evolve to create the change that is needed? What are the tools uniting us—technological or otherwise? Join us for a multi-faceted discussion with public and private sector leaders forging this path. We’ll learn about new ways of looking at economic mobility and how specific companies are addressing financial security as part of their business mission. We’ll also discuss what that means for nonprofits working with low-income people and in communities of color, and how they can leverage these changing dynamics.

This plenary is sponsored by Intuit.

Climate Change, Natural Disasters and Financial Well-Being | National Harbor 12

As global temperatures rise, the likelihood of severe weather patterns and large wild fires has increased. In 2017 alone, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria and Jose, along with the wildfires in the western United States, took the lives of thousands and left thousands without shelter, electricity, running water and other basic needs. Natural disasters have a profound, negative impact on the financial well-being of all households, but low- and moderate-income (LMI) households, which often lack the financial cushion to bounce back from a crisis, are particularly affected. This session will explore the disproportional impact of natural disasters on LMI households and households of color, as well as how organizations and financial institutions can support preparation and response efforts. This session is sponsored by Bank of the West.

Empowering the Grassroots: Innovating Financial Capability from the Ground Up | Chesapeake G-I

While individual behavior is often blamed for racialized wage and wealth divides, compelling evidence indicates that racial economic inequality is primarily the result of long-term investment in some communities and a lack of investment in others. From Transactions to Relations: The Promise of FinTech and the Power of Human Relationships | Chesapeake D-F

Technology is in every aspect of our lives. Our children ask Siri what they want to know, while we find restaurants and pay for lunch – all on our phones. The same is true for us all financially, in the way that we move money from place to place and watch companies compete for our banking relationships. But will “fintech” eventually replace the need for human interaction within financial services? Our research tells us the answer is not so simple. Join a conversation on the future of fintech and how human interaction and control over product features is still relevant – and what that means for nonprofits focused on financial issues facing their clients. Exploring the Promise and Risks of FinTech for Low and Moderate-Income Communities | National Harbor 10

Financial technology (fintech) offers a promising solution to brining financial empowerment tools to scale. As the adoption of fintech grows, and its potential for impact increases, how can we ensure that low-and-moderate income (LMI) men and women—particularly those of color—benefit from fintech to advance their financial well-being? In this session, a panel of direct service providers and fintech companies that develop, design or deliver products to LMI consumers will discuss what LMI clients want; how we can design safe and affordable fintech products that maximize impact; and how nonprofits can effectively partner with fintech companies. Joe Sanberg, CalEITC4MeJoe believes that everyone who works should be able to afford life’s basic needs and live with financial security. He founded the Golden State Opportunity Foundation to expand financial security to the millions of Californians who work hard yet experience constant financial stress. Joe has been the leading advocate for the state’s new Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for low-income families. Joe not only lobbied California to pass the credit, but in 2015 when the state didn’t allocate enough money for outreach, Joe created CalEITC4Me. This community organizing program has connected 2 million working California families with $4 billion of state and federal Earned Income Tax Credits. Last spring, CalEITC4Me led a grassroots organizing campaign that won a massive expansion of California’s EITC so that in the 2017 tax season, 3x more working families have been able to earn the Cal EITC. To date in 2018, 1.4 million Californians have claimed the credit.

Making a Difference in Communities Across the U.S.

According to Prosperity Now, nearly half of households in the United States do not have a basic safety net to weather emergencies or prepare for future needs, such as a child’s college education or homeownership.

As communities across the U.S. face daunting and complex challenges, from a lack of affordable housing to rising household financial vulnerability, Citi is working alongside clients, municipal leaders and leading civil rights and community organizations to develop solutions that result in greater financial resilience and access to opportunities for those too often left behind.

Prosperity Now honors the memory of our friend and colleague Bill Schweke.

A co-founder (and the first employee) of what was then “the Corporation for Enterprise Development,” Bill played a singular role in defining and implementing a progressive vision of economic development that is his legacy today.

His passing is a loss to all of us, and his wife Lucy Gorham and their son Nate remain in our thoughts.

Together, we carry forward the values that Bill held so dearly—economic justice and development, fairness,

community, innovation, integrity and inclusion.
