Indian Medical Association College of General Practice (IMACGP) was started in the year 1963 by Dr. P.G. IntroductionAccording toAmericanCollegeof Family Physicians, “Familymedicine is themedical specialtywhichprovides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is a specialty inbreadththatintegratesthebiological,clinicalandbehaviouralsciences.Thescopeoffamilymedicineencompassesallages,sexes,eachorgansystemandeverydiseaseentity”.

World Health Organization (WHO) defined Family medicine as that specialty of medicine which isconcernedwithprovidingcomprehensivecare to individualsandfamiliesand integratingbiomedical,behavioural and social sciences. As an academic discipline, it includes comprehensive health careservices,educationandresearch.

Thespecialtyoffamilymedicinewascreatedin1969tofulfillthegeneralistfunctioninmedicine,whichsufferedwiththegrowthofsubspecializationandfragmentationofpersonalisedhealthcareafterWorldWarII.

In the increasingly fragmented world of health care, Family physicians are dedicated to providecomprehensivehealthcareforpeopleofallages—fromnewbornstoseniorsandtreatingthepersonaswhole.Unlikeotherspecialtiesthatarelimitedtoaparticularorganordisease,familymedicineintegratescareforpatientsofbothgendersandallages,andadvocatesforthepatientinacomplexhealthcaresystem.Familymedicine’scornerstoneisanongoingprocessofpatient-physicianrelationshipwiththepatientviewedinthecontextofthefamilyandtheirsocialsurrounding.

IntroductionIndia leads the world with largest number of diabetic subjects earning the dubious distinction ofbeing termed the “Diabetes capital of theworld”. The latest global figures on diabetes releasedbytheInternationalDiabetesFederation(IDF)hasraisedaseriousalarmforIndiabysayingthatnearly 52%ofIndiansaren’tawarethattheyaresufferingfromhighbloodsugar.Indiaispresentlyhometo 65million diabetics, secondonly to Chinawhich is home to 98.4million diabetics. By 2030, India’sdiabetesnumbersareexpectedtocrossthe100millionmark.

Duetothesesheernumbers,theeconomicburdenofdiabetesinIndiaisamongstthehighestintheworld.Therealburdenofthediseaseishoweverduetoitsassociatedcomplicationswhichleadstoincreasedmorbidity andmortality.WHOestimates thatmortality fromdiabetes, heart disease andstrokecostsabout$210billioneveryyearinIndiaandisexpectedtoincreaseto$335billioninthenexttenyears.

IntroductionThe last fewdecadeswehavewitnessedanexponential growth in knowledge, catapultinggeneticsfromobscuritytoapre-eminentplaceinhealthcare.Newinformationaboutcausativegenes,diseasediagnosis and available treatment options for several single gene and complex genetic disorders; aswellasseveralbirthdefects,arenowknownmakingdiseasediagnosisandtreatmenteasier. It iscriticalthatclinicianslearnaboutthesedevelopmentsandincorporatethisknowledgeintotheirpractice.

Eligibility• The courses are open toMBBS Doctors who are registered with theMedical Council of India (theStatechaptersofMedicalCouncilofIndia)andareLifemembersofIndianMedicalAssociation

• ForthosecandidateswhoarenotmembersoftheIMA,theyshouldbecomeLifemembersofIMAattheirlocalchaptersandsendthemembershipdetails.

• AstudentwhohasbeenprovisionallyregisteredwithMedicalCouncilisalsoeligibletoenrollforanyofthecourses,subjecttohiscompletionofCompulsoryRotatoryInternship[CRI].studentshouldsubmit a Photostat copy of the Provisional Registration Certificate and a copy of the CompulsoryInternship.Asandwhenstudentgetsthepermanentregistrationnumber,studentshouldsubmitthePhotostatcopyofthePermanentRegistrationCertificate.

Pattern & General rules of Assessments and Examinations2 Diploma, Fellowship and certificate courses follow a set pattern of formative and summativeassessments/examinations.Followingarethetypesofassessments/examinationsthateachcandidateissubjectedto:• SelfAssessments• WeekendGradedAssessments[WGA]• Semester-end Graded Exams [SGA]: There will be a graded MCQ Examination at the end ofevery semester, i.e. first semester-end for theone-year coursesand thefirst, secondand the third semester-endforthetwo-yearcourses.• FinalEnd-courseGradedExams[FGA]Self assessments:Thesearescheduledonlineattheendofeverylectureandareneithertimednorgraded.Theseassessmentshelpthecandidatesinassessingthemselvesonhowmuchtheygraspedthelecture,knowwheretorefocus,study,understandandassimilate.Theyarestronglyadvisedtobetakenupbutitisnotacompulsion.
