TRAINING FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS

The business benefits of a skilled, qualified workforce are hard to ignore. Employees who understand what’s required of them, have the skills to perform their role and the confidence to use their initiative, are able to boost productivity, improve efficiency and make your organisation run more smoothly. Having the right people, with the right skills, doing the right jobs, is vital for the long term success of any business.

Investing in your people – by encouraging them and supporting them to improve their skills and qualifications – increases staff motivation, strengthens their commitment to your business and makes them less likely to look for alternative employment, which all helps to reduce your recruitment costs and minimise the disruption caused by an unstable workforce. Plus, nothing exceeds the sense of satisfaction you receive when a member of staff develops over time to their full potential.

St Helens Chamber has an excellent track record in providing training and education. We have a “Good” rating from Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education) and we have Gold standard Investors in People accreditation. As an accredited provider, we deliver standard and bespoke training courses, Apprenticeships and qualifications in a wide range of subjects. We have a proven track record of working for businesses in this way and can do the same for you.

St Helens Chamber training can be delivered across Liverpool City Region, including from Chamber premises in St Helens and central Liverpool.

Our expert Advisers can work with you to assess the training requirements of your business. They will identify the skills gaps in your workforce and suggest suitable courses to fill those gaps and help increase your competitive edge.

We now have more nationally accredited qualifications available than ever in a range of key business areas, including management, marketing, IT, customer service, business administration, and many tailored courses for particular job roles, such as retail, logistics, and health & social care. The list of contents on page 3 will give you a guide to what is on offer.

HOW OUR TRAINING WORKS Training from our Business School is different in two ways from a traditional course:

Firstly each of your employees, in conjunction with you as their employer, can work with our Training Advisers to devise the course that exactly fits their job role, or the role you wish them to develop into. A course in management may include some units developing skills in customer service, or marketing – depending on what you as the employer wish them to study. With a wide range of flexible and tailored individual units available, which can be mixed and matched to suit individual job roles, all our qualifications are made to measure.

Secondly, most of our qualifications are delivered on a one-to-one basis in your workplace. You can expect our Training Advisers to visit your staff approximately every three weeks, to assess their work, set projects, teach units of study, and ensure all is progressing well with their course, combined with useful and practical seminars and training days. These bring all the benefits of peer group learning for the individual. Our Training Advisers will talk all this through with you in detail when we work with you to develop your training plan.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

In 2017 the way the government funds Apprenticeships in England changed considerably. If you’re an employer with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million, you will have started paying the Levy in May 2017 and you will access your funding for Apprenticeships through your Digital Apprenticeship Service account.

If you are not required to pay the Levy then 90% of Apprenticeship training and assessment costs will be funded by the government, with the remaining 10% being paid by the business.

There is no fixed cost for Apprenticeship training, and costs can vary greatly between qualifications. St Helens Chamber will carry out a free training needs analysis of your workforce and provide you with a fully costed training plan, detailing the best qualifications to suit your business needs and the cost of training. You can rest assured that we will always help you to find the most cost-effective business training.

Businesses with fewer than 50 employees will be able to access fully-funded Apprenticeship training for any Apprentices aged 16-18. All businesses offering an Apprenticeship for young people aged 16-18 will receive an extra £1000.

Marketing Apprentice transforms business’ online presence

Marketing Apprentice Kieran Martin completed a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Marketing and is now enjoying a rewarding career at NL Williams.

The NL Williams Group began in the 1970s, and since then has developed from its original incarnation as an engineering business, manufacturing durable oil storage tanks, to the multi-branched company it is today.

Kieran wasted no time in putting his new skills to good use, and within his first few months at the company, launched a new website and company logos which have formalised and clarified the business’ structure.

He said: “When I first started things were not quite up to scratch with the company’s marketing and website.

“One of my first tasks was to build NL Williams’ online presence and I built a new website through WordPress. The website was up and running in a month and I was really pleased with that.”

Kieran progressed onto an Apprenticeship after completing one of the Chamber’s Fast-Track to Apprenticeship courses, which gave him the skills he needed to feel confident entering the workplace.

He said: “I was very close to going to University, but one of my friends got a similar Apprenticeship and he told me about the hands on approach that the course took. I’m a practical sort of person so doing an Apprenticeship appealed to me.

“I saw the Chamber’s fast-track course online and applied for it, which led to me getting an Apprenticeship.”

Kieran is due to progress onto a Level 3 Apprenticeship and feels positive about his decision to pursue an Apprenticeship over going to University. He said: “I would definitely recommend an Apprenticeship. I didn’t think I would be able to build a website and use Adobe software; I’m learning new skills every day.

“I had a good knowledge of spreadsheets but am learning new formulas and I have also been helping with sales and learning how to use Google sketch.”

As well as on the job training, Kieran also received support from St Helens Chamber to gain additional qualifications.

He said: “I didn’t quite achieve what I needed in terms of IT qualifications at school but the Chamber sorted that out for me and put me through an IT exam.”

Haydock based Fibre Drums, has upskilled its workforce and achieved exceptional staff retention rates with help from St Helens Chamber.

Established in 1969, the business manufactures and distributes specialist packing materials. This requires a skilled and motivated workforce which has been achieved through commitment to staff development.

Stephen Cunniffe, Managing Director, said: “We took advantage of the Apprenticeship programmes that were on offer from the Chamber, and we committed to every Apprentice that we took on.

“We are committed to educating our staff through training and development.

“We’ve also put some of the long term shop floor staff through qualifications as well, for example English and Maths that they didn’t manage to get at school.”

As a result of their dedication to developing staff, the business was nominated and went on to win the Business of the Year Award at the Chamber’s Apprenticeship Awards.

Stephen continued: “We got invited to the Apprenticeship Awards, but we didn’t expect to win and it was a nice surprise when we did.”

Fibre Drums has recognised the importance of training staff and taking on Apprentices, not just for the future of the company but for the benefit of the local community as well.

Stephen said: “We like to put back into the local economy in terms of creating jobs for local people.

“We are a long established business in St Helens and have been trading for over forty years.

“We traditionally have a lot of long serving staff and we do have an ageing workforce, so we have been trying to develop young people in the business so we can continue for years to come.

“The benefit of having younger people coming into the business is that that you can mould them and they don’t come in with preconceptions.”

Support from St Helens Chamber has helped Fibre Drums achieve their staff development goals.

Stephen said: “Fibre Drums has had tremendous support from the Chamber and we’ve had some excellent candidates put forward.

“Rory has just completed his Level 3 in Management, and he will possibly be looking to do a degree in the future. He started as an Apprentice and he is already an Assistant Production Manager.

“We also have Tanisha in the warehouse who has trained to drive the forklift and reach trucks and is starting her Level 3 leadership course in September. We’ve taken a lot of people on and all of them have been excellent in their own way. I would definitely recommend taking on an Apprentice to other businesses.”

Merchant Rentals sees staff progression soar thanks to Chamber training

Training from St Helens Chamber is helping Tina Hawkins and her team progress at Merchant Rentals.

Tina is currently completing her second qualification with St Helens Chamber, having been promoted to Customer Retention & Administration Manager as a direct result of her training.

Merchant Rentals, based in Haydock, is an asset finance company for the merchant acquiring industry, and provides finance to retailers and vendors who require point of sale equipment.

Tina has been at the company for eight years, having progressed from Lease Administrator to Customer Retentions Team Leader, through to her current managerial position.

Tina commented: “I did the Level 2 Team Leader qualification with the Chamber, as well as my functional skills including Maths, English and IT, and it was fantastic. We built it around what I was doing in my day-to-day activities and matching this against the assessment criteria.

“After I was promoted to Manager I decided to go ahead with the Level 4 Business Administration which I am currently undertaking.

Diane Hartley, Training Adviser at St Helens Chamber, said: “Merchant Rentals is a great example of a company that is investing in its people. Tina’s qualifications have had a knock-on effect within the organisation which is great to see.”

Tina added: “Nearly every member of my team is doing a qualification and, as I have been promoted upwards, members of my team have also taken on more responsibility because of their training with the Chamber. One of my Team Leaders has just started his Level 2 qualification.”

“My promotion was a direct result of the things I learned while completing my course. I was leading a team of six but now that’s more than doubled and I’m managing 15 people across two departments.

“Doing the qualification has made me go about things differently, and I was able to fine tune my skills. I can see a real difference in how my team and I are reacting to enquiries.

“I would definitely recommend undertaking a qualification with the Chamber.”

Training helps Jacqui in new role

FH Brundle is the UK’s largest stockist of wrought iron components, welded wire mesh, and perforated metal. The company operates from seven regional centres around the UK, including one in Haydock.

One of the key functions of the Haydock operation is the sales team. The branch deals with a range of national customer sales over the phone, and also operates a trade counter.

Jacqui Gallagher has been at the company for five years and recently completed an Apprenticeship in Sales through the Chamber Business School.

Jacqui said: “This is my first sales position having previously worked in a customer service focussed role. I hadn’t been in education for a number of years, so the chance to achieve something based on my job was too good an opportunity to miss.

“I must admit, I was apprehensive at first, but found that the pace of the course was just right and the support provided by my training adviser was superb. Completing my Apprenticeship was a great achievement which has helped me to develop in my sales role within the company.”

IAN O’BRIEN FH BRUNDLE

“I have been in my current sales role for about 12 years, having been in sales prior to this. Taking the Apprenticeship has helped me to focus on my role and encouraged me to identify improvements with my performance. One of the aspects that I found challenging and rewarding was the technical certificates element. By studying this, I realised how important the theoretical side of sales is and how I was already doing this as part of my job. I have decided to continue with my learning and I have decided to progress to the next level.”

“As a family firm which began in the early 1970s we have a predominantly older workforce, many of whom have been with us a long time. Whilst we really value this, it doesn’t leave much room for the younger generation so the apprenticeships provide a great solution.

“Young people, particularly those for whom this is their first job, come with no preconceived ideas about how things are done. It is really important for us to bring fresh blood into the company.”
