Guwahati College: A brief Introduction

Guwahati College situated in the eastern part of Guwahati is, one of the premier institutions of Assam
for higher learning in the region. It has a strength of nearly three thousand students, who are ably guided
towards the achievement of their goals, by a highly qualified and experienced teaching community.
The College was started on 3rd August, 1964 at Chandmari. Later on it was shifted to its permanent
building in Bamunimaidam at Jyotinagar. The College has now traversed through half a century, successfully
contributing to the upliftment of the society. It is now one of the most reputed Colleges of Assam where
students from all over the North Eastern Part of India get admitted.
Guwahati College has completed 52 glorious years of existence and recently Reaccredited (Cycle 2) by
NAAC with Grade B with a CGPA of 2.62. The College now stands as a full fledged Institution of higher
learning equipped with the latest educational technology. The infrastructure reflects the development of the
College with its well stocked library ( with a Text Book section ), Departmental Libraries, Seminar Halls, well
equipped Laboratories and a beautiful play ground.
The College has its own unique Anthem. At present the College has three streams both in H.S. and
Degree level. Today the College provides major courses in sixteen subjects. The Government of India under
DBT provided an Institutional Biotech Hub in the year 2011 for the benefit of students and teachers and till
today IBT HUB has brilliantly lived upto its directives (Accredited by peer committee of DBT) and is also
providing support to the students of neighbouring Colleges.
The Mission of the College :
The mission of the College is to transform the society through spread of knowledge, education of the
youth and development of personality, acquisition of skills by learners, creation of dedicated human
resources, and helping in Nation Building.

College Emblem :
The College emblem with its motto is highly suggestive of the institution's mission and vision. In
appearance, the emblem resembles a lotus inpartial bloom. This highlights the Nationalistic spirit that prevails
in College. It also suggests opportunity for the students to prosper. This image further emphasizes the
optimistic spirit that forms the basis of the mission of the College -"the will to develop and improve further".
The figure of the open book implies the propagation of education while the alternate dark and white
lines suggest the College's endeavour to reach out to humanity in its entirety without any prejudice against
caste, creed or colour. The earthen lamp, illuminating the surroundings to remove any darkness of ignorance,
forms the motto of spreading the light of knowledge. The small dots represent the multitude that is expected
to be benefitted by the propagation of knowledge.

Examination from SEBA, CBSE or any recognised Board of other States.

In accordance with the government policy, there is a provision for reservation of seats for students belonging to SC, ST. (Hills), ST. (Plains), O.B.C., M.O.B.C. and Differently abled. Admission on the Basis of Performance in Extra Curricular Activities:
The College may admit a few students on the basis of performance in Sports, Music, Dance,
Drama, Debates and other such activities, at least in the National Level. The selection will be done
after screening and on the basis of interview by the Admission Committee.
Admission Requirements: (To be produced in original at the time of admission)
1. Original copies of mark sheets and certificates of the examination passed. 2. Two copies of recent passport size photographs.
3. Age certificate.
4. Character certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended.
5. Caste certificate (where necessary) in Original.
6. Original certificate of sports / extra curricular activities. 7. Migration certificate (for students migrating from a Board/University other than SEBA /
AHSEC/ GU)

Attendance Requirements In order to be eligible to appear at a University Examination every student has to attend a minimum of
two-third of the lectures, practicals and tutorials held during the academic session.
The Principal shall have the power to strike off the name of a student who is grossly irregular in
attendance.
Students remaining absent on medical grounds should submit a medical certificate from the
appropriate authority while rejoining college. However, absent on Medical Grounds does not mean that they
will be exempted from any kind of examination .
I. Eligibility Criteria:
* The candidate must secure a minimum of 50% (for General Category) and 45% (for Reserved Category) marks in the concerned subject. * The candidate can apply for major in maximum three subjects. * The candidate without having concerned subject in 10+2 level must secure minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.
I. Selection Criteria:
There will be a selection test for Major Course.
The merit list will be prepared on the following basis:

Discipline The college expects its student to conduct themselves in a disciplined and dignified manner in the
college and outside. Students must follow the following rules : 1. Students are responsible for their conduct and are prohibited from doing anything, either inside or
outside the college that will amount to a breach of discipline or interference in the discipline and normal
working of the college. 2. Interference of any outside pressure group in the internal affairs of the college is strictly prohibited. 3. Students are expected to have regard and consideration for each other and be respectful to the
teachers, members of the college staff and fellow students.
4. Unbecoming language or ungentlemanly conduct shall be severely dealt with. 5. Students shall maintain perfect silence in classrooms and desist from disorderly behaviour. They are
expected not to walk about or make noise in the corridors or infront of classrooms and must keep as quiet as possible at all times. During their free periods students should work quietly in the Library or Reading Room, or spend the time in the Students Common Room, but without causing any disturbance.
6. Students shall take proper care of the college property, furniture and premises. They must not cause
damage to or tamper with college property, furniture and fittings.
7. Students shall leave their bicycles, scooters or motorcycles locked in the parking shed provided for this
purpose. No bicycle, scooter or motorcycle shall be parked in any other part of the college campus.
8. No society can be formed in the college nor shall any person be invited to address a meeting in the
college without the permission of the Principal.
9. Notices designed to be pasted or circulated by the students anywhere in the college premises shall
require the approval of the Principal.
10. Students shall not spoil or misuse the lawns or any other space of the college. 11. Communal harmony must be maintained. 12. Students suffering from any contagious or infectious diseases will not be permitted to attend the
college. They will be allowed to rejoin classes only after producing a fitness certificate from the
appropriate authority. 13. It is mandatory for students to come to college in proper College uniform during class days as well
as on other working days.
14. Smoking, chewing tobacco and spitting betel-nut inside the college campus is prohibited. 15. Students shall not loiter around in college uniform outside the college campus. 16. Parents / Guardians must monitor their wards during their study in the College.
Ragging
Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited within the college premises or outside the campus. Ragging
ordinarily means any act, conduct or practice by which dominant power or status of senior students is brought
to bear on students freshly enrolled or students who are in any way considered junior or inferior by other
students. It includes individual or collective acts or practice which;
(a) Involve physical assault or threat or use of physical force.
(b) Violate the status, dignity and honour of women students.
(c) Expose students to ridicule and contempt and affect their self-esteem.
(d) Entail verbal abuse and aggression, indecent gestures and obscene behaviour.
Any individual or collective act or practice of ragging and indiscipline shall be dealt with severely. An
anti-ragging committee as per UGC guidelines exists in the college.

Monitoring Academic Progress
The Principal, Teachers and IQAC of the college will meet the students on convenient dates during the
academic session to make first hand assessment of academic progress or any problems related to teaching
and learning.
Guardians Meet
There will be specified meeting of the guardians with the Principal and teachers. Guardians should
attend such meetings to express their opinions on academic and other developmental matters of their wards

FACILITIES AND FEATURES 1. Identity Card
An Identity Card will be issued to every student at the time of admission. The card displays the name,
class, roll number and a recent passport size photograph of the student duly endorsed by the college
authority. Students are to carry their Identity Cards at all times. He / she will have to produce the same
whenever required to do so. Every student is required to get his / her identity card renewed at the beginning
of the new academic session. The identity card must be surrendered at the time of leaving college. 2. Time Table
Time table will be available during the commencement of the new session.
3. Travelling Concession
Students are entitled to Railway/Air concessions to and from their homes during vacation and for
travelling on academic tours organised by the college.
4. Scholarship :
(a) National Merit Scholarship (on all India basis) for Higher Secondary student and for Degree students.
(b) State Merit Scholarship for H.S. and Degree students.
(c) Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes fee compensation.
(d) OBC/MOBC/EX-Tea garden labour scholarship.
The above scholarship are granted by the Government for which applications of the students are forwarded to the respective authorities for consideration. After sanction, the scholarship money is deposited into individual Bank accounts of the respective students.
(e) Late Ananda Chandra Das scholarship to the Best Graduate of the year.
(f) Late Dr. Abdur Rahim scholarship to the Best Science Graduate of the year.
(g) Guwahati College Teachers and Employees Thrift and Credit Cooperative Society Ltd. offers
scholarship to economically backward students.
5. Students Aid Fund
The college has instituted a students aid fund. The objectives of the fund are :
(a) To render financial assistance to the economically backward and deserving students whose father’s /guardian’s income falls below BPL norms of the Government.
(b) To meet any other need of the students considered to be genuine by the college authority. A student requiring financial aid shall have to apply to the Principal of the college with an income
certificate given by competent authority.
6. Students’ Association and Co-curricular Activities Guwahati College Students’ Union society is the general body of the students of this college. Every student of

the college is a member of this Society. The office bearers of the union are elected annually. The Union
endeavours to promote fraternity, mutual understanding, a sense of responsibility among the students and
works for all round development of the college. The Union also organises games and sports, debating,
cultural activities among the students, under the guidance of the teachers and the college authority.
7. The College Magazine
The Guwahati College Magazine is published annually. The Magazine publishes articles by teachers,
students and office staff and reviews of educational, cultural, social and sports activities of the college. The
magazine is edited by a student editor under the supervision of a member of the teaching staff. The college
also publishes an annual News Bulletin.
8. Library
The College has a well-stocked library. The library is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all days except
Sundays and holidays. Students can borrow books from the library for two weeks. The library is well equipped
with Xerox machines, internet facility and airy and spacious reading rooms for teachers and students. SOUL
2.0, N-List (INFLIBNET) is available in the library. The library subscribes to a large number of dailies,
weeklies, periodicals and journals on a variety of subjects. The library has a Book Bank for lending textbooks
to deserving and needy students for one year. Membership to the library, issue/return of books and searching
/referencing of books, all these informations can be obtained from the Librarian. Books on loan with members
can be recalled at any time without assigning any reason. Books kept in the reserve section are not issued on
loan.
9. Career Counselling cum Placement Cell
Guwahati College has a Career Counselling Cell. The Cell’s objective is to help students of the college
in seeking employment besides providing vocational guidance. The cell organises counselling session with in
house faculty or experts from outside. The cell subscribes to Employment News, Weekly Employment News
and displays relevant news on the Notice Board. Campus interview are conducted for placement into various
MNCs, Nationalized Bank etc.
10. U.G.C. Network Resource Centre (U.G.C. - N.R.C.)
For the convenience of students, the college has started the U.G.C. Network Resource Centre. The
objective of this scheme is to create awareness among staff and students about the use of computers in
various activities like administration, finance, examination and research. In addition to it, the information and
communication network would help the college to have access to multimedia material in teaching and
learning at places of eminence in India and abroad.

11. Forum for Extension Education Programmes The college has constituted an Advisory Committee for Extension Education Programmes as per Guwahati
University’s guideline. The main purpose of extension education, as approved by the U.G.C., is that
Educational Institutions have some responsibilities towards the society to extend knowledge and other
institutional resources to the community and vice-versa.e
Teachers of the college, in association with students, have done significant work in organising
community development work, literacy and environmental awareness programmes, holding health check-up,
campus and blood donation camps at various backward areas.
12. Grievance Redressal Cell
The Grievance Redressal Cell of the college looks into the grievance or complaint of a teacher/student/
parent/staff. A grievance or a complaint can be conveyed in writing to the Cell in the prescribed form.
13. N.C.C.
The college has a full-fledged National Cadet Corps, Army Wing, for both boys and girls. Regular
training is imparted throughout the year by trained N.C.C. officers. There are many award and scholarship
schemes for eligible cadets including Vir Chilarai Award, Sahara Scholarship etc. It is worth mentioning that
NCC ‘C’ Certificate holders have various opportunities for Govt. services and for getting scholarships like
entry in defence services, telecommunications etc., Youth exchange programme, community development,
personality development, adventure training and shooting are being taught to the cadets in the regular
Sunday classes in the college premises. Students willing to join the N.C.C. can contact the respective
Professors-in-charge after the commencement of the academic session.
14. N.S.S.
The National Service Scheme unit of the college is actively engaged in various community welfare

15. Guides
There is a Guides unit in the college under the supervision of a trained teacher (for girls only). Students
willing to join the guide unit can contact the Professor-in-Charge after the start of the academic session.
16. First Aid & Health Services
The college has initiated a First-aid and Health service centre in order to cater emergency support to
students and employees of the institution. Moreover this centre also conducts Blood donation camps and
various free Health Check-up cum general awareness camps in collaboration with different Medical
organization of the Govt. of Assam.

17. Sports
The college maintains a good playground where football, volleyball and cricket are played. Students of
the college have consistantly performed well in inter-college competitions at the youth meet organized by GU.
18. Society for Zoology and Nature
‘The Society for Zoology and Nature’ is a pioneering society (registered in the Govt. of Assam) for the
lovers of nature and environment. The society has set up an Ethnic Heritage Centre for research and
development work on various ethnic communities of Assam., 2018-19
19. Planning Forum
There is a Planning Forum under the supervision of the Economics Department. The forum organises
seminar, debates etc. and under takes socio-economic surveys.
20. Guwahati College Geographical Society
‘The Earth’(a registered society) was established by the Department of Geography with a view to
create awareness among the people for understanding the significance of geographical study of the region.
The society has conducted a number of programmes focussing on different student development activities.
21. History Study Centre
The Department of History has started this association in the year 1999, with a view to popularize and
promote the study of history.
22. Society for Green Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry established this society in the year 2002. The society will increase the
popularity of the subject Chemistry and its day to day application among the students. The Society for Green
Chemistry has been organising talks on different aspects of the subject, as well as relevant topics of day to
day life.
23. The Disaster Management Cell
The college has constituted a Disaster Management Cell. The objective of this cell is to create
awareness amongst people to face any kind of natural hazard like earthquake, flood, cyclone etc. and
prepare them to learn to survive such calamities.
24. Guwahati College Women’s Forum
The Guwahati College Women’s Forum was set up with the prime objective of helping girl students of
the college in extra-curricular activities and making women of neighbouring areas aware of hygiene and
socio-economic matters.

27. Examination
The college holds two Terminal/Sessional Examinations. These tests are intended to evaluate the
knowledge of the students and make them familiar with the examination system. All students are required to
appear in the terminal/sessional examinations. The final examination conducted by the A.H.S.E.C. and G.U.
are held in the college under the supervision of the Examination Committee. 28. Guwahati College Institutional Level Biotech Hub (IBT Hub):
Guwahati College has started an Institutional Level Biotech Hub sponsored by the Department of
Biotechnology, Government of India where students of the college and of other institutions will get facilities to
practice biological and biochemical experiments at molecular level. Most of the sophisticated equipments like
PCR, Electrophoresis, UV-vis spectrophotometer, advanced microscope etc. are initiated to make available
in the hub. The teachers of the college have also received facilities for advanced scientific experiments and
for demonstration of their works among the students through the said hub.
29. Day Care Facility
Guwahati College has started a Day Care Facility in the college campus. This has enabled
the Teachers and Staff of the college to keep their children in the Day Care Facility during the
college hours. The facility provides all amenities and homely atmosphere to the children during
their stay.
30. Short term courses on the following are available:

(c) Ornamental Fishery (d) Sales and Retail Management Terms and Conditions for these courses will be intimated after necessary permission
is received from Gauhati University.
31. Guwahati College Eco-Club The college has recently launched an Eco-Club. Apart from promoting best practices for
enviromental protection and education within the campus. The club in the coming days hopes to adopt

No form will be received after the last date of submission. Incomplete forms and forms without relevant documents will be rejected. Admission will be strictly on merit. Students must obtain the College Uniform from Authorised Centre only. No
other centre can supply the College Emblem & Uniform. Candidates must produce all Original Pass Certificate / Marksheet /
Testimonials / Caste Certificate on the date of Admission.

Students seeking Free Admission must produce Original Income Certificate & documents of Parents/ Guardians from the Local Revenue Circle Officer / Mauzadar as per Govt. guideline.
The Admission Committee will have the right to cancel such Income Certificate / documents if it finds any irregularity.
Students whose parental annual income is less then Rs. 1.00 Lakh from all sources will be eligible to avail this scheme.
If either of the parent(mother or father) of the students is working in the State
Govt./Central Govt. / Semi-Govt./ State or Central Govt. Undertakings, such
students shall not be eligible under this scheme. A declaration shall be given
by the student(s) in the form of an undertaking to this effect. If such a
declaration is found to be false, the admission shall be cancelled and fee shall
be realized from such students.
