Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd... and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

At the very centre of our College is Jesus, The Good Shepherd. The good news of Jesus’ love and acceptance of us, his straying sheep, comes to us through the Bible. The shepherd’s crook reminds us of Jesus’ promise to always be with us, guiding, comforting and protecting us as we ‘follow’ him. No matter what happens in life, we remain in the circle of his love and care.

T he Middle Years is more than just the middle – it is a key time in a student’s

schooling. Between the ages of ten and fourteen, children grow and develop more rapidly than any other developmental stage during their educational life. At Good Shepherd, our Middle Years program is designed to cater for this time of developmental change. In Middle Years, students begin to experience and specialise in the Arts and Technology subject areas. Students undertake a variety of projects in Arts and Technology, enabling them to express themselves through a variety of mediums. These projects are designed with an inquiry approach to learning, which engages students in creative problem-solving techniques. A variety of co-curricular programs are offered at Good Shepherd. Through these programs, students are challenged to engage in higher-order thinking. Many Middle Years students

embrace the opportunity to be involved in the College’s co-curricular activities, including Tournament of the Minds, academic competitions, robotics and the College musical. Our Pastoral Care program has many opportunities for students to engage with others. A key focus is on building relationships and developing key interpersonal skills for their future. Through a Positive Education Model, students engage in activities that develop their under-standing of what it means to live well and flourish. Through understanding the science of the brain, learning about positive emotions and taking time to be mindful, students connect with each other and themselves. House spirit is an integral part of Pastoral Care time, with many inter-house activities keeping the healthy competition alive in the everyday life of the College.

T he Senior Years at Good Shepherd are designed to empower students to realise

their potential in a range of flexible and individualised pathways. Each student has the potential and capacity to enrich their work through the development of their gifts and abilities. We strive to tailor quality and authentic learning experiences to bring these gifts and abilities into fruition.

It is during their senior years that students take true ownership of their learning. The foundations and fundamental elements that have been nurtured and have flourished during the Junior and Middle Years, and the Senior Years are about students reaching out and taking control of their learning through positive risk taking and academic resilience. At Good Shepherd, we believe that an environment of high expectations and support allows students to develop the skills they need to navigate the changing nature of work, study and recreation in the twenty-first century. Students experience greater autonomy and choice in their learning pathways, from a diverse range of subject selections through to voluntary programs, such as the Headstart Program,

engaging in tertiary study or a school-based traineeship program. A relevant and rigorous senior education program does not shy away from the world that awaits past the doors of the classroom; instead, the Senior Years are about inviting the world inside and finding connections and experiences that properly prepare students for life beyond the College. Students can expect to have conversations about their learning with their Senior Years teachers that are based on reflection, feedback and continuous improvement. This invites a new way of thinking about learning; no longer is it something passive, or something that occurs subconsciously. Instead, learning in the Senior Years takes on an active spirit and invites students to develop an understanding of lifelong learning, grounded in twenty-first century skills that are responsive, flexible and continuous. We hope that students graduate from Good Shepherd with not only their relevant qualifications, but with a thirst for learning that will enrich their lives in whichever pathway they choose.

T he wellbeing of our students is central to all that we do at Good Shepherd and

we aim to ensure all students feel a sense of belonging to our College community. To facilitate this sense of belonging, Good Shepherd has adopted the evidence-based approach of Positive Education; which aligns with our focus on educating the whole child. Positive Education brings together the science of Positive Psychology to encourage and support individuals, schools and communities to flourish. We refer to flourishing as a combination of ‘feeling good and doing good.’ Positive Education focuses on specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience, promote mindfulness, and encourage a healthy lifestyle. At Good Shepherd, Positive Education is integrated into our curricular, co-curricular and Pastoral Care programs.

Good Shepherd also adopts a restorative practices framework to enhance relationships among students, teachers and parents, and to further nurture our sense of community. The Restorative Practices philosophy, which is in keeping with the Lutheran approach to education, provides students with the opportunity to develop self-discipline and positive behaviours in a caring, supportive environment. A positive school climate in which young people feel connected is the best environment for learning. We believe that our approach should primarily be an educative and forgiving one. That is, the fundamental aim of our philosophy and practice should be that students learn to become responsible for themselves and their actions and to make genuine, positive contributions to their community. A restorative approach sees conflict or wrong doing as an opportunity for students to learn about the consequences of their actions, to develop empathy with others, and to seek to make amends.
