Membership Information

UYC is a family oriented private club that has been in existence since 1951, prior to the creation of Lake Lanier. UYC is a truly unique organization. It should not be confused with other marinas on Lake Lanier nor, for that matter, with other yacht clubs around the Southeast or even across the nation. At UYC, members and their families enjoy a special bond of friendship and camaraderie that is difficult to describe but readily apparent throughout the Club and our many activities.

UYC has often been described as a “family organization” and it is indeed that. We maintain and enjoy a very wholesome atmosphere where our Members and their families, including children and grandchildren, are welcome and involved in almost every aspect of the Club’s activities. Member’s enjoyment is further enhanced by the location of the Club facilities on what is arguably the most beautiful spot on Lake Lanier

The emphasis at UYC is on recreational boating, as a hobby and as a discipline, and as a means of engaging and involving family and friends in an amicable social relationship. It has always been this way, and is expected to continue to remain so for the foreseeable future.

The purpose of this booklet is to introduce you to our Club and give you a brief overview of who we are, what we care about, and why we treasure our membership in UYC. This booklet also provides information about how to become a Member, including financial responsibility of Membership.

We hope to pique your interest in University Yacht Club. If so, we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Membership Chairman:

Ken Odum c/o University Yacht Club 6649 Yacht Club Road Flowery Branch, GA 30542 770-967-2814

Sailing At University Yacht Club

The motto of our UYC Sail Fleet is “The Most Fun for the Most People”. We try to live by that motto by enjoying a wide variety of sailing oriented activities, both on and off the water. Sailors enjoy our club year-round, undaunted by the cold weather or varying lake levels. On any given weekend, you’ll find UYC sailors actively involved in one or more of the following fun activities: UYC Club Racing: We host two 5-race series each year and these races are what we call “friendly-competitive”. LARC Racing: We are members of the Lanier Auxiliary Racing Council and so our members have the opportunity to engage in racing that’s a bit more competitive. Hot Ruddered Bum and Lanier Cup Regattas: We are the host to both of these events that are the most fun regattas on Lanier each year and draw competitors from all around the lake. Fun with Power-boaters: Sailors by their nature are a fun-loving lot and we enjoy the camaraderie of our power-boating members at their bi-annual raft-ups as well as on the various other events they host, like the Fall Leaf Cruise. Support the Junior Program: There’s nothing quite as much fun as watching young children figure out how to make a sailboat sail! Our Sail Fleet is always there to encourage and support the next generation of our sport. Casual Cruising: We are blessed with a beautiful lake, and our wonderful location on the lake makes it easy to hop on our boats and head out for a cruise. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a brilliant sunset while sailing along at dusk. Then it’s home to UYC for a delicious meal at the clubhouse!

Power Boating At University Yacht Club

University Yacht Club is home to over 50 cruisers, ski boats and pontoon boats. Our location on the southern branch of Lake Lanier makes us a perfect spot for those living in Metro Atlanta to come up for just a day at the lake. We have shower and changing facilities available for those wanting to freshen up after a day of boating to join us for an evening at the clubhouse restaurant. We host many activities and events “year-round” in the clubhouse, including more formal adult evenings, such as New Year’s Eve and The Commodore’s Ball and fun, family oriented events, like our wonderful 4th of July weekend, complete with fireworks and competitive sports games. To enhance your relaxation here are UYC, we have just completed a renovation of our beach area, which includes an air-conditioned beach house with restrooms and laundry facilities, a large deck and covered gazebo for your family gatherings, as well as a fire-pit for those chilly evenings. A multi-purpose Pavilion is adjacent to the beach house and can be used for private parties and functions. We also have a two bedroom cottage and one bedroom A-frame which are perfect to house your weekend guests. For those wishing to winterize and store their boats during the “off season”, we have both covered and uncovered storage available at UYC. When your boat is in the water, we also have a storage area for your trailer too. At UYC we also take our boating seriously, as we have several members, who are also actively involved in The Power Squadron and have taken extensive courses in boating safety and navigation. They can help inform the UYC members on various issues throughout the year, making boating a safe and enjoyable sport. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our boating family here at UYC.

Houseboating At University Yacht Club

If you are looking for the perfect place to dock your houseboat, then look no further. Here at University Yacht Club we have covered and uncovered houseboat slips that can accommodate boats up to 100 feet long. Due to our wonderful location at the end of a cove in a southern branch of Lake Lanier, our waters generally stay quite calm. We are an active group that includes approximately 50 houseboats and we participate in “year-round” activities and social events at UYC. In both Spring and Fall, we host a weekend long raft up out on an island and we have had over 35 boats in attendance for this event. You will enjoy the use of our mooring balls, located right off our beach area. These make it easy to relax and soak up the sun without driving too far. The newly renovated beach area is a wonderful addition to the club, featuring an air- conditioned beach house with restrooms, a large deck and gazebo area for your family gatherings and even a fire-pit for those chilly evenings. Our nearby Pavilion offers a multi-function space, which is perfect to host a party or office function. If you would like to invite guests to stay here at UYC, we also have a two bedroom cottage and a one bedroom A-frame that can be rented for a day or two or even a week. Come and join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner overlooking the lake at our beautifully decorated Clubhouse, which features an adjoining covered deck for more casual dining options. We can also bring your food directly to your houseboat during “off-peak” hours. Additional club facilities include a “houseboat-sized” gas dock and pump out facility on site. In addition, we also have a Ship’s store and a library, which are housed, in the office area next to the gas dock. The UYC open air non-denominational chapel sits among the trees and also offers views of the lake, making a Sunday service a true delight. We look forward to meeting you soon and showing you around our wonderful Yacht Club.

Junior Boating at University Yacht Club UYC is a family oriented yacht club. We make every effort to include our children and grandchildren (and their friends) in many events, both on and off the water. Our Junior Boating Program is designed to allow our Juniors to enjoy themselves at the club while learning to enjoy boating related activities. We stress safety, sportsmanship and teamwork. The Program is geared towards young people from age 6 to 16 and is open to families of all UYC members. The Juniors fleet includes Optimist Prams, Sunfish, Lasers, Holders and other small sailboats. The Program is managed by an experienced, paid, professional Program Director and a team of Certified Sailing Instructors. Members of UYC’s Sail Fleet and Power Fleet support the Program by providing boats, running safety patrols during on-the-water activities and encouraging a fun, safe learning environment. Every summer UYC hosts a Summer Sailing Camp for the Juniors. This is a week long camp, (held for two consecutive weeks) that features activities both on and off the water. Shore activities include boating safety, boating terminology, “how to” chalk-talks, knot tying and fun games. All of our Juniors learn the basics of sailing and are able to demonstrate their ability to “showoff” their skills to parents and grandparents by the end of the week. We are proud that our Junior Boating Program has grown steadily over the last several years, driven by the enthusiasm of the Juniors and their families and encouraged by the overwhelming support of the UYC Membership. We look forward to welcoming your young people to join our Junior Boating Program at UYC.
