The following presentation provides information for families who are consideringan enrolment at Iona College for Year 5 in 2022.

Due to current circumstances, it is unfortunate that we are not able to meet you,however we hope this information gives your family a better understanding ofIona’s history and culture and the enrolment process.

The College Open Day scheduled for Monday 1st June will be replaced by a VirtualTour. Please view this tour from the College website in June.

FR TIM LONG OMI (SEATED) AND FR DENIS MCCARTHY OMI

On the request of Archbishop James Duhig, the Missionary Oblates ofMary Immaculate were asked to establish an all boys’ school for localfamilies in the bayside area. On the 1st October 1957, Fr Tim Long OMIand Fr Denis McCarthy OMI took residence of an old farmhouse in theview of readying our College which would open its doors to 58 students inJanuary 1958.

Our College has a strong focus on academic achievement

Pathways for students with a variety of abilities andinterests - 70-80% pursue tertiary study

Curriculum based on Australian Curriculum and QCAAsyllabuses

In 2019, of the 140 students in Year 12, 79% of thecohort pursued an OP pathway. The State average forOP pathway students was 49%. 78 VET qualificationswere awarded and 14 students undertook a schoolbased apprenticeship. OP results for 2019:

• 24% achieved an OP 1 – 5 • 57% achieved an OP 1 – 10 • 88% achieved an OP 1 – 15• Five students achieved an OP1 which is 1% of all

OP1s awarded across Queensland in 2019.

In the Year 5 cohort, 180 new Ioniansjoin our community from a range oflocal Catholic Parish and State Schools.Generally, class sizes are of 30students.

The students are empowered to growinto innovative, self-directed learnersthrough the process of inquiry andcritical thinking.

• Consideration will also be given to other factorsas the College seeks to achieve a balanced andinclusive community which is Catholic in itsidentity.

• Iona has a tradition of welcoming families fromdiverse educational, cultural and religiousbackgrounds and will continue to do so.

• Attendance at a Catholic primary school does notautomatically guarantee enrolment at IonaCollege, nor does attendance at a non-Catholicprimary school exclude a student.

• Ultimately, the Rector reserves the right to acceptstudents guided by the above principles.
