• It can produce cheap electricity (hydropower)
• It provides water for year round irrigation of cropland

Downstream flooding is reduced
Reservoir is useful for recreation and fishing
Disadvantages of large dams
Enormous losses of water through evaporation
Especially in summer!
Mass of water will cause earthquakes

Case Study : Kenya Power produce electricity by nuclear

They are planning to build 1 million KW class nuclear power station. According to Energy Regulation Committee ( ERC) , Kenya is
able to produce 1.5 million KW.However, ERC forecast, Kenya will require 1.8 million KW by 2016.
Kenya is 3rd country, which planning to build nuclear power plant by 2015.
Other countries, such as South Africa and Nigeria also planning to build nuclear power plant.
