D4 ran all of the public comments on the FRCP proposed changes through text analytics. We generated a word cloud showing the most frequently used words in the public comments, bubble maps showing the least and most common themes, a heat map and bar graph showing which Rules were addressed and how often. In order to gain some insight into the public’s reaction to the proposed changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, D4 gathered the comments into a database and ran them through various text analytics to discern common themes.

The following heat map details the number of documents in each theme. The more documents assigned to a particular group, the larger the box and the darker the color. The most common theme was “truth, harm, proof, injured, injury” which was associated with 390 comments.

Digging deeper into the top ten most common themes, we can see the most popular keywords within them. Each color represents a different theme, and the size represents how often each word appears in association with a particular document.

In contrast, the same exercise was performed for the 10 least common themes. Due to the smaller number of documents associated with each one, no particular theme words stand out, giving the circles a more uniform size.

Rules Addressed
Furthermore, we tracked the instances where the individual rules were explicitly mentioned by number. This provides us with a unique glimpse into how frequently each rule was discussed.
