Introduction to the Propeller
• Propeller converts rotational power from the engine into thrust.
• The rotating blade of a propeller shares similar characteristics to a wing passing through the air
• A propeller blade generates thrust F through an aerodynamic lift force component, demands an engine torque Q to overcome aerodynamic drag, and will stall if the local resultant angle of attack of the blade exceeds max
• Additional factors: trailing vortex generation, tip losses, compressibility
• propeller slip is the difference between the theoretical pitch, geometric pitch, and the actual pitch, effective pitch, of the propeller. An efficient propeller is one which has the least amount of slippage and therefore converts more engine horsepower into thrust.
• Feathering is changing an aircraft or wind turbine propeller blade by angling the blades parallel to airflow.
• Feathering of propeller is utilize to reduce wind milling effect by matching streamline with pitch.
