    Pronuncing Portugese:

    1. Hello: Ol (With an open A, ah... The O is pronounced like in Spanish, alsoopen.)

    2. Goodbye: Adeus (Again, open A. The E is pronounced like in French. Thisword is great because it can be formal or not, and it's easy to say.) or Tchau(Said like CIAO in Italian. This word isn't formal at all, but rather friendly. Don'tuse it with people you don't know.)

    3. Good afternoon: Boa tarde (Boh-ah Tahr-d.). Used after noon or after the noonmeal, until twilight.

    4. Good morning: Bom dia (Boh-mm dih-ah. This actually means GOOD DAY, butits used mostly used like GOOD MORNING, so avoid using it for all the day.).

    Used before noon or before the noon meal.5. How are you?: Como est? (Coh-mooh esh-tah? This is formal.).

    6. I don't speak Portuguese: No falo portugus (Nah-oom fah-looh pooh-r-tooh-gus. The E is said with french accent, like the one in ADEUS.)

    7. Do you speak English?: (This one you can say in English, but here it isanyway) Fala ingls? (Formal form. Fah-lah inn-glesh. It's not how we reallysay it in Portugal, but people will usually understand you.)

    8. Man: Homem (O-men with an open O. Said like this people may notunderstand you, but the real thing can't be written-- at least, I can't write it.) orSenhor (Seh-nior. This is Spanish accent, but they'll understand it. If you aretalking to someone SENHOR can be used like YOU, in a formal way.)

    9. Woman: Mulher (Mooh-lehr. Not like Portuguese at all, but you should beunderstood.) or Senhora (Seh-niorah. The exact thing as with SENHOR, here.)

    10.Dog: Co (Cah-oohm.)

    11.Cat: Gato (Gah-tooh.)

    12.Spider: Aranha (Ah-rah-niah. Again, Portuguese people don't say "niah", butthey should understand.)

    13.What time is it?: Que horas so? (Queh o-rah-sh sah-oomm. The E in QUE isclosed, and the O in HORAS is open like in spanish.)

    14.Thank you: Obrigado (Oh-bree-gah-dooh.), if you are a man; Obrigada (Oh-bree-gah-dah.), if you are a woman.

    15.Please: Por favor (Pooh-r fah-voh-r.)

    16.You're welcome: De nada (The nah-dah. This can be used with just aboutanyone.) or No tem de qu (This one is very formal. Nah-oomm tah-eehm thequeh.)

    17.Computer: Computador (Com-pooh-tah-door. This isn't really how it's said, butyou should be understood.)

    18.Friend: Amigo (Ah-meeh-gooh. This means a male friend.) or Amiga (Ah-meeh-gah. This means a female friend.)

    Girlfriend: Namorada (Nah-mooh-rah-dah. With an open A in RA.)20.Boyfriend: Namorado (Nah-mooh-rah-dooh. With the A, same as in

    NAMORADA.)

    21.Why?: Porqu? (Poohr-queh. Open E. This isn't how we pronounce it, but it'sclose enough.)

    22.Because: Porque (Poohr-queh. The defference between this and PORQU isthe pronunciation of the E. With PORQUE it's more closed.)

    23.Head: Cabea (Cah-beh-sah.)

    24.Hand: Mo (Mah-oohmm.)

    25.Finger: Dedo (Deh-dooh.)

    26.Toe: Dedo (We use the same word.) or Dedo do p (Deh-dooh dooh peh. Itmeans literally FOOT FINGER.)
