Reflection
Today is the 5th Sunday and basically the last Sunday of Lent since next Sunday is Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Today, we come to the end of our “giving” series reflections based on our Lenten formula: Don’t give up, just give. In order to get to ‘care-giving’ which is our theme today, let us quickly do a recap of this whole journey from the first week to this day. The aim is to refresh our memories in order to situate this theme but also at the same time, bring our attention to the fact that there has been a consistent connection all these weeks about God giving and restoring life and man, called to obey and live the new life given. On first Sunday, God gave life to Adam/Eve. They lost that life through disobedience. God in Jesus Christ came to restore that life, had to conquer Satan through obedience hence the second reading that Sunday said: Through one man sin entered the world and through sin death … through one righteous act of one man Jesus Christ, acquittal and life came to all. On this day, we reflected on our God-given blessings, especially life. On the second Sunday, God chose Abram and gave him a new life (Opportunity) and Abram had only to obey and embark on the journey trusting God. God, in Jesus Christ chose Peter, James and John and gave them a glimpse of His glory – the new life he is offering his followers. Hence the second reading that Sunday said: He saved us and called us to new life … through the appearance of our Savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality. On this day, we reflected on thanksgiving as the appropriate response to this God. On the third Sunday, God forgave the Israelites their numerous complaints and grumbling and gave them water from the rock – refreshment of life. Jesus gave the Samaritan woman ‘water of life’ – forgiving her past way of life, leading her to a new life of faith and witnessing. Hence the second reading that Sunday said: God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Our reflection this day was forgiveness, a second chance we receive from God and called to share with one another. Last weekend, the fourth Sunday, God chose David and gave him the Kingdom of Israel. Jesus gave sight to the man born blind. Hence the second reading said: Awake, O sleeper and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you life. Our reflection this day was almsgiving, emulating our generous and giving God, giving back to him and sharing what we have with those who are less privileged which in a way is sharing our life with them. By now, you have seen that consistency: life, death, new life and fresh start. No wonder then on this 5th and last Sunday, death and resurrection is the focus of our readings. Death represents the highest irreversible state. However, our readings today look at death as reversible, not from the light of the resurrection of Christ – lest we say he is God; but from the point of view of ordinary people like you and me: “O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them …Then you shall know that I am the Lord” (1st reading). At the tomb of Lazarus, he made good his promise: “He cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out… so Jesus said to them, ‘untie him let him go” (Gospel). We too can rise like Lazarus from all our impossibilities. “But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, … the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also …” (2nd reading) “But if Christ is in you …” is a conditional statement on which this power and promise rests. The question then is how can Christ be in us? If you have followed the consistency we traced so far, one thing stands out: Obedience. – Through the obedience of the one man Jesus Christ, life was restored.

1st Reading EZ 37:12-14 Thus says the Lord GOD: O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD
Responsorial Psalm PS 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. R. (7) With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; LORD, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication. R. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. If you, O LORD, mark iniquities, LORD, who can stand? But with you is forgiveness, that you may be revered. R. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. I trust in the LORD; my soul trusts in his word. More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the LORD. R. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. For with the LORD is kindness and with him is plenteous redemption; And he will redeem Israel from all their iniquities. R. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
2nd Reading ROM 8:8-11 Brothers and sisters: Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you.
Gospel Jn 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45 The sisters of Lazarus sent word to Jesus, saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.” When Jesus heard this he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this he said to his disciples, +Let us go back to Judea.” When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise.” Martha said, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.”
He became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and see.” And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him.” But some of them said, “Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?” So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, “Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” And when he had said this, He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go.” Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him

Reflection– Continued It has become very common to call this time that we are
facing coronavirus unprecedented. But if we go through
the scriptures, we can easily see that that is not entirely
true. Generations in the past had faced life threatening
situations and in many cases, many died but there are
always survivors who must do something: Obey. When
God destroyed the world with a flood, Noah and his
family were saved, but they had to build the ark and
enter it. (Gen. 7: 1-16).When Sodom and Gomorrah
were destroyed, Lot and his family were saved but they
had to run without looking back. (Gen. 19: 15-17)
During the plague in Egypt, the Israelites were saved
but they had to mark the doorpost of the houses they
were in with the blood of a lamb. (Ex.12: 7-13) When
the Israelites were being bitten to death by serpents in
the desert on their way to the Promised Land, those
who obeyed and looked at the bronze serpent on the
pole were saved.(Num.21: 4-9) When Jericho was
destroyed, Rahab and her family were saved but they
had to remain in a room and tie a scarlet cord in the
window through which she let the Israelite spies out.
(Jos. 2: 12-21)
Now that obedience has been learned and we
are all in our homes, like God wants to slow the fast
moving world down and teach us patience, what next?
The answer is caregiving. It is possible that this time
has reminded us of our innermost desire to be
connected with each other. It is said that if life gives us
lemon, we make lemonade. When was the last time you
and your family had this amount of time together? Take
this time to care for your loved ones. Let it be a time of
healing for failing relationships. A time of catching up
for times lost as we over busied ourselves with work
and several other commitments. A time of getting more
sleep that we have lost. What about all those things that
you have always desired to do around your home but
defer or ignore them because you have no time? You
do have time now. We can care for ourselves, our
families and even the whole world by spending a little
more time praying together in our homes and learning
to trust in God. Like Lazarus, he will raise us up.
Respect Life Corner-“Lazarus, come out!” In John’s gospel, Jesus is adamant that Lazarus, though dead, is capable through a divine miracle, to simply get up and walk out of the tomb. Pope Fran-cis writes to us that we too can get up and walk away from sin; from the part of us that is dead due to sin. He invites us this week to look at our lives and search out the “dead parts of our soul” so that we too may rise like Lazarus and live in God’s love. Learn, Act, Connect and Pray- As we think about these readings that tie so well to the Resurrection of Jesus, we ask the Lord for grace to rise from our sins, “to come out of our tombs” and to follow Christ. How can we share this message of hope and new birth with refugees, those facing a crisis pregnancy, the forgotten and the lonely? Remember that it is up to all of us to dignify and enhance life in all its stages and situations. Go and share the good news today!
