Reflection Our reflection last weekend centered on a ‘melting pot’ where everything come together and work for the good of those who love God. It led us to an understanding that in order to achieve this, we need to identify the one things to ask for, and when received encompasses all that we seemingly gave up. Using King Solomon’s request as a model, God taught us that that one thing is not for self-benefit. Remember, he did not ask for long life or for the lives of his enemies. He asked for wisdom and understanding that will benefit the whole people of Israel. The ‘self’ is a monster that has refused to be con-quered. Most of our decisions and prayers are geared towards self-benefit and self-aggrandizement. And more often than not, it hides under ‘self-love’. Today, God wants us to realize that there is more to love than the self. Our gospel reading begins with these words: “When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself.” He just lost his cousin whom he grew up with, who became his forerunner. What he needed most at this moment was privacy to mourn. And that explained why he withdrew to a deserted place where he could be alone. But that didn’t happen because the crowd found him because they needed him. If you were Jesus in that situation, what would you have done? If it were me, I could hear myself saying: I really need to be left alone or my family needs me right now. But not Jesus: “When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.” He ignored himself and started healing and teaching the crowd and in doing that, I am sure that his brokenness was also healed. But it gets even better. By evening, the crowds were still with him that the disciples urged him to dismiss them so they could go look for food themselves. Jesus replied: “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” According to Matthew, the apostles had brought only fives loaves and two fish. In John’s gospel, it was a little boy who had brought those. But whether it was the apostles or the little boy, the five loaves and two fish were for personal benefit. But whoever had them, had to give them up, seemingly choosing to starve. But that love for others over self, became the fulfilment of the first reading: “You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost,…” and proof of the truth of the second reading: “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us.” “He who loved us …” is Jesus and that love transcends self-love. That love is higher than filial love. That love is agape – the selfless love that made him lose his life so we can have life in abundance. And today, he is telling us: “Come to me heedfully; listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.” The benefits assured to David were the establishment of the kingdom of Israel in his family. So God is saying, leave ‘self’ and do my work and I will take care of the rest of things for you. But how often have you said or heard others say: I have no regrets taking care of myself, or this decision is the best for my family or similar expressions even when that decision destroys the general good of others? The apostles or the little boy could have kept the five loaves and two fish for them-selves and their family, you know. But what is more satisfying: satisfaction for one or twelve as opposed to five thousand men, not counting women and children? They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children. With God, less is more and emptiness becomes just attitude not actuality. God bless you!

1st Reading IS 55, 1-3 Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.
Responsorial Psalm PS 145:8-9, 15-16, 17-18,
R. (cf. 16) The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. The eyes of all look hopefully to you and you give them their food in due season; you open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
2nd Reading ROM 8:35, 37-39
Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Gospel MT 14:13-21
When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disci-ples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I con-fess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for-ward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

Respect Life Corner-“They all ate and were satisfied.” In Matthew’s Gospel account (MT 14:13-21), we learn that Jesus’s first apostle, the one who leaped for joy in the womb during His mother Mary’s visit-had been beheaded and Jesus was filled with grief. The news of the death of John the Baptist sent Christ to seek out a deserted place -alone-to think about his cousin and beloved friend. But Jesus’s solitude was short-lived. Even in his deep anguish, He recognized the needs of others over His own as villagers from all over followed Him from several towns. Christ had pity for those who needed Him. He cured the sick. He fed those who came to Him spiritually and physically through the loaves and fishes miracle. Learn, Act, Connect and Pray-Who is hungry for God’s goodness and love –right in your midst? Is it someone in your own family: a child, a spouse, a parent? Is it someone sitting in a pew at the same Mass you attend? Let’s pray for wisdom, charity and compassion this week to see the needs of others that may not be readily appar-ent. By seeing others with the eyes of Christ, we can see the individual beauty and dignity that is stowed on all people. We can work to be Christ to one another!
RCIA will begin about the first week in September. If you know
of anyone who might be interested in joining the Catholic
Church or if you would like to deepen your understanding of
your faith, please contact the church office.
