Animal Management News………5-6

This newsletter is created and edited by the Micke Grove Zoological Society, a non-profit organization that supports Micke Grove Zoo.

The Micke Grove Zoo is excited

to announce that it has a furry

new addition to its wildlife family:

a young female snow leopard. The

cat, which turned a year old on

May 3, made its grand debut at the

Paseo Pantera exhibit during the

“Snow Leopard First Day-

Birthday” celebration at the Zoo

on Saturday, May 10. Zoo staff

provided keeper talks and snow

leopard themed crafts, games, and

learning stations.

In late 2013, the Zoo received a

recommendation from the Snow

Leopard Species Survival Plan

(SSP) to acquire the yet unnamed

snow leopard cub from the

Albuquerque BioPark in New

Mexico. Zoo Curator Avanti

Mallapur and Animal Care

Specialist Carrie McMorris

picked up the cat on December

31 and returned to Micke

Grove Zoo just after midnight

on the start of the New Year.

“I am happy to introduce [the

snow leopard] to the public so

that everyone can admire this

beautiful cat and hopefully walk

away with a new found

appreciation for the exotic

animals that share our planet,”

stated McMorris.

McMorris, who serves as the

cat’s primary caretaker, adds that

the snow leopard “is

still a youngster and that

it will be fun for the

zookeepers and visitors

alike to witness her

milestones and watch

her mature into a

beautiful and confident

cat.”

Micke Grove Zoo has

housed snow leopards

since 1986 and has seen

the birth of nine snow

leopard cubs. Considered

endangered by the International

Union for the Conservation of

Nature (IUCN) red list for

endangered species, it is estimated

that only 2,500 to 6,500 snow

leopards exist in the wild today

due to diminishing prey base,

habitat loss, and poaching. Snow

leopard breeding and education

programs at facilities such as

Micke Grove Zoo are a critical

part of worldwide conservation

efforts aiming to protect this rare

species and their habitats.

Dear Zoo Members and Friends,

I hope that you have had the opportunity to visit the Zoo during the last few months to see the

progress that is being made. The new female snow leopard celebrated her first birthday and

our two-year-old bobcat was named Nitro by our contest winner, five-year-old member

Hannah. The aviary is now being cleaned up to welcome back the lorikeets later this summer.

The Society continues to negotiate with the County to create a management contract that will

allow us to manage zoo operations. We invite your support in our efforts to improve Micke

Grove Zoo which we think can become the “best little zoo in America”! Your memberships,

animal adoptions, vehicle donations, summer camp and education program registrations,

birthday parties, gift shop and snack bar purchases, attendance at fundraising events as well as

individual and corporate donations will help us to achieve our goal.

Micke Grove Zoo is a treasured resource in our community that we need to support, grow and

keep for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Please let me know how you

would like to help.

Diane DeBruno

President of the Micke Grove Zoological Society

(Snow leopard continued)

Snow leopards are the only big cats found in

the high altitudes of the Himalayas and their

range extends across twelve countries in an

area collectively as large as Mexico. Built for

survival in a rugged and challenging habitat,

they are equipped with a grey to tan coat

spotted with smoky-grey to black rosettes

for camouflage, extra-large paws to prevent

them from sinking in the snow, and a long tail

used for balance.

MGZS officials are seeking financial support

to help complete the new snow leopard

exhibit located just north of the cat’s

temporary home. Please contact the MGZS

at (209) 331-2010 or [email protected]

for more information on how you can

get involved.

Call me “Nitro” - bobcat receives new name After receiving more than three hundred name ideas during the

Bobcat Naming Contest held earlier this spring, the Micke Grove

Zoo staff is excited to announce the winning name of its young

male bobcat: “Nitro.”

The name was suggested by Hannah Schneider, age 5, whose

parents and younger sister enjoyed a private after-hours dinner

hosted by the Micke Grove Zoological Society at the Zoo on June

1. Hannah also received a bobcat puppet and personalized

certificate, and the family received a complimentary one year

membership to the Zoo.

“Hannah had been brainstorming names for a whole week,”

shared Beth Schneider, Hannah’s mother and long-time supporter

of the Zoo. “Then one night we went for a walk and she just

turned to me and said ‘What about Nitro?’ I told her I loved it, and

so we submitted the idea.”

In the world of organic chemistry, nitro compounds are those

that contain a lot of energy and often result in major explosions.

This chemical behavior seems to describe the young male bobcat

perfectly: his temperament is highly energetic and he seems to

explode off the ground into a twenty foot vertical jump, often from a

complete stand still.

“Nitro” joined the Micke Grove Zoo collection in January 2014 and has been a popular animal ever since.

Visitors enjoy seeing the active cat stalk wild squirrels and birds parading outside of his enclosure or relaxing

in his hammock. Visitors attending the Education Department’s “Zoo After Dark” program also get to see

the cat in a different light, watching him engage with his enrichment toys and running laps around his exhibit

in the twilight hours.

Zoo staff chose Hannah’s suggestion from a long list of ideas, including over fifty submissions of “Bob”

and twenty submissions of “Rufus,” with the latter likely stemming from the bobcat’s scientific name Lynx

rufus. While this particular naming contest is over, the Zoo expects to host naming opportunities for other

animals in the future.

School is out and people are parked at the pool.

Summer is upon us and the weather is warm. Some

people enjoy the heat, others merely tolerate it.

Animals have different reactions to heat as well.

Some animals are more adapted to local

temperatures than others, but our zookeepers work

to keep everyone comfortable.

The Central Valley has what climatologists call a

Mediterranean climate, similar to what is found

around most of the Mediterranean Basin, as well as

parts of Australia, South Africa, Central Asia, and

Chile. These areas enjoy warm, dry summers and

receive most of their precipitation in the winter

months.

The Gardner Mediterranean Aviary at Micke Grove

Zoo is dedicated to birds from Mediterranean

climates around the world. These birds are naturally

adapted to climates similar to Lodi’s, plus they have a

beautiful waterfall feature and plenty of shade.

Most of the exhibits at Micke Grove Zoo have a

water feature or bathtub for the animals.

Zookeepers may use fans and misters to keep the

animals cool. They also make sure that animals have

access to shade and plenty of water.

Unfortunately, the coolest place in an exhibit may

be on the cool concrete of a behind-the-scenes part

of the animal enclosure. During summer months,

animals like to nap away from the heat of day just

like people do. If you visit the zoo in the afternoon

and do not see a lot of animals, it may be because

they are somewhere out-of-sight keeping cool.

During the summer, the best time to visit is during

the cooler parts of the day, either the morning or

late afternoon. Luckily, the zoo offers plenty of

summer activities that take advantage of the cooler

parts of day. Summer Zoo Camp and the Zoo Zoom

5K and Fun Run take advantage of cooler morning

temperatures. Visitors can even sign up for an

evening excursion at Zoo After Dark!

- Contributed by Wild Guide Vanessa Roderick

Is it too hot for the snow leopard? Never fear! Parts of the snow leopard’s native range has average

summer temperatures over 100°F. That is 10°F hotter than the

average summer temperatures of San Joaquin County! [ ]
