We’re now into the longest federal election campaign in Canadian history. Let the games

begin. Or rather, let them continue. We’ve already been in an unofficial campaign for months. At The Kawartha Promoter, we’ve also taken an early swing at things. This is our sixth issue of offering a feature we call “Election Insight.” In each issue, we ask the four major-party candidates in the riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock for their 150-word response to a specific question. Just a reminder; they are: William MacCallum (Green); David Marquis (Liberal); Mike Perry (New Democrat); Jamie Schmale (Conservative). And the questions so far have addressed:1) 2)

5) 6) Instead of covering the election like a horserace (who’s ahead by a nose), or a prize fight (that jab caught his opponent off guard), we wanted to give our candidates a chance to respond carefully to the issues. And we wanted to do it in smaller, digestible chunks. It’s not as exciting as the sports-analogy approach. But I would argue we already get way too much of that in our media—and too little of this. The other argument against us is that we give the candidates free rein to say whatever they want, and give up our journalistic responsibility to filter their responses. I have faith that our readers can do the filtering themselves. And The Promoter still sets the questions. We have five more issues—allowing for five more questions—before Canadians vote on Oct. 19. I have a couple in mind already, but would love to hear some suggestions from our readers.

A three-day park I think we should turn the Bobcaygeon Beach Trailer Park into what they call a three-day park, where people can come to stay for one-to-three days. They can use it to collect their thoughts, get their laundry done and go shopping for whatever they need—all in beautiful Bobcaygeon. They can get their boating charts and road maps at the Chamber of Commerce office. The kids can use the beach, the washrooms, and buy snacks to munch on. An aeration pump can be installed by the beach to keep the water fresher and cleaner. With additional docks, it could be a good place for people to come to swim, tie up at the docks, or stay with their trailers or tents. You will get nice family groups that way. If you look, there are almost always more boats waiting at the locks than moving through. I’ve done a lot of boating and trailering on the Trent, and I’ve trailered to and from Vancouver, Florida and California, with two kids.

I’ve seen lots of these three-day parks all over the United States, and they work fine for those wanting a travel vacation, rather than to stay in one place. I don’t know how they would set the rates, but I’m sure the city could come up with something. This could be a marvelous future for the Beach Trailer Park. Boat depot begone I am becoming increasingly concerned about the boats that seem to be rapidly accumulating in the vicinity of the former bowling alley at the north end of Bobcaygeon. This is quite an eyesore for those of us who travel into and out of Bobcaygeon on an ongoing basis. Also, I cannot believe that this sight is good for tourism. More than the aesthetics, I am concerned about the possibility of a fire occurring because of engine-associated petroleum products igniting and spreading through these fibreglass and aluminum boats. This site is adjacent to a residential area, and a fire would spread quickly and have very bad results for the nearby residents. Is there not a proper boat repository for such boats in the City of Kawartha Lakes? I strongly urge the city to rectify this situation as soon as possible.Shelley WildBobcaygeon

Don’t want to grin and ‘bear’ it A neighbour was standing on the side of the cottage road at 10 this morning. She was frightened and did not want to resume her morning run as she had just sighted another large black bear in her path along the main road.

Frozen by fear, and indecision, she didn’t know what to do. Fortunately a person in a car passed by (he was a friend), who then drove her home. This is the fourth such incident this week alone. All sightings during the daylight hours too, contrary to popular belief. The bears seem not to be nervous of people, and merely saunter slowly off. We were instructed to call the “Bear Hotline,” and did so last week as the large and recognizable “droppings” reached our driveway too, as well as actual visual contact. This proved to be a waste of time as those on the other end of the line neither offered helpful advice nor keep any records of such bear incidents. They listed the usual points we are all familiar with regarding garbage care and not backing down from this creature. When I asked what to do about an aggressive bear, they replied, “call the police.” Thanks. This does not help those people here who now feel vulnerable and nervous about venturing forth on hikes or cycling. A possible bear attack will affect tourism in the entire region—at the very least—and most importantly, can cause serious injury. I can only ask that “Bear Warning” signs be prominently posted. Perhaps asking cottagers, particularly renters, to NOT place garbage in bins

our language is who we are Recently Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde spoke on the need for First Nations languages to be taught in schools. Lorena Fontaine, of the University of Manitoba, furthered this by speaking of the great advantage learning different languages brings to the development of the brain. It is interesting to note that French Immersion has led the way in this country both in understanding the importance of languages, and in paving the way for Native languages to be included. We learned from the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission how Indigenous children were not allowed to speak their own languages for the 10 years of their school lives. Most of us, who cannot even imagine what it would mean to lose our language, understand the importance of reclaiming one’s identity through language. I spoke with Murray Whetung of Curve Lake First Nations about language. He graciously shared


bits of wisdom. In the 1960s, the government was prompted to include First Nations languages ... until they found out how many there were. The Ojibwa language is spoken across a large part of Canada, and each settlement has its own dialect. There are also Cree and Huron, among others. Interestingly, the Odawa (Ottawa), as traders and travellers, spoke many languages. Murray also explained the word Nishnaabe as meaning the first man, and Anishnaabe as the First Peoples. City Hallmulti-million dollar fix for Buckhorn bridges As part of its pre-election spending announcements, the federal government has committed $1.1 million for the County of Peterborough to upgrade the Lower Buckhorn and Trent Canal Bridges. These are the two adjacent bridges on County Road 23—still known to many as Highway 507—that cross above the spillway from Upper to Lower Buckhorn Lakes, and above the Trent-Severn Waterway’s canal at Lock 31. Total cost of the restoration of the Lower Buckhorn and Trent Canal Bridges is estimated at over $3.3. million, with provincial funding still to be committed. Separated by only 100 metres, both bridges were originally constructed in 1976. Large sections of spalled concrete have begun breaking off the bridges, requiring periodic temporary restrictions in use of the federal waterway. Both bridges are due for major rehabilitation.

In small working groups, community members tackle key downtown challenges, including but not limited to, façade design. “Our goal is to invigorate community pride and increase economic development opportunities by working in partnership with local stakeholders,” said Darlene Algire, Downtown Revitalization Coordinator.

New hangars to up KL airport’s appeal Lindsay’s “Kawartha Lakes Municipal Airport” now has 10 new hangar spaces for aviators. Construction has recently wrapped up on the $626,000 airport hangar expansion. The 10 new T-hangars will provide opportunities for aviation enthusiasts who currently must house their aircraft at other airports. “We have been investing in our airport and in our community to provide opportunities for aviation enthusiasts to come to Kawartha Lakes and to possibly relocate their aircraft here as well,” said Ward 5 Councillor Steven Strangway. “We are strategically located between Toronto and Ottawa, and only 30 minutes to Highway 401. There are a number of reasons for those outside the area, whether pleasure aircraft operators or business owners, to give a long, hard look at Kawartha Lakes and all we have to offer.” Among other recent upgrades to the airport is the expansion of the apron parking areas and the lengthening of the taxiways. These improvements are setting the stage for new hangers and taxiways to increase the level of service. The aircraft parking areas have been increased from 23 to 45 permanent tie-down spots. The visitor parking areas can now accommodate 10-15 aircraft flying in to use the fuel system and restaurant. With a primary asphalt runway of 1,067 metres (3,500 feet) and a second grass runway of 805 metres (2,641 feet), the airport is open 24/7. Runway lighting is automatic, and the fuel system is a state-of-the-art, self-service, card-lock dispensing unit. The airport also has an aircraft maintenance facility, a flight training school and a full-service restaurant. It is home to many privately owned general aviation aircraft. Airport manager Bob English says “the addition of these hangars will be a huge boost locally.”

QUeSTIoN: How do you see the role of sustainable, family-based farming in this riding, and what will you and your party do to encourage it—and to encourage more participation by young people?

William macCallum, Green Party Food is life. The federal government cannot continue to muddle along without sound policies or strategies for sustainable agriculture. This means greater focus on strengthening the viability of smaller farms, increasingly the only option for younger farmers. Many small to medium-sized family farms have proven to be ecologically sustainable as generations of farmers have been excellent stewards of their land and efficient producers of nutritious food. A Green government would ensure farm-support payments are farm based, not production based, to encourage more farmers. We would consider limiting non-resident land ownership to ensure that potential farmers do not have to compete with land speculators. We would restore investment in cooperatives, help re-establish value-added food processing, and promote adequate shelf space in grocery chains for products from local farms and local food processors. The growing popularity of farmers markets, farm-stands, organic and direct-from-the-farm sales is enthusiastically promoted by the Green Party.

David marquis, Liberal Party As a farmer who worked on my family’s beef and dairy farm south of Sunderland until I was 45, I know how important it is that we encourage and support the next generation of farmers. In HKLB, agriculture is one of our most important economic drivers and a critical connection to the land. Across Canada, agri-food accounts for seven percent of our Gross Domestic Product and over 2.1 million jobs. We need to address the specific challenges that young farmers face, such as inadequate access to capital and land, and high debt levels. mike Perry, New Democratic Party The NDP was originally founded by farmers. Today’s NDP will be a strong partner for family farms, and is the only party with a national food strategy. The NDP will enhance business risk-management tools that keep family farming sustainable, and will return the choice of collective marketing to farmers. The NDP will protect supply management. Local farmers, including young farmers, have told me that access to credit for start-ups and low interest government loans or grants would help. As chair of the local Food Coalition, I know that food enterprises support agriculture in our area. Protecting our environment is also key to sustainable farming in our riding. As Member of Parliament, I will help our farmers get the most from food companies and fight to ensure our farmers get a good deal under international trade agreements. I will be hosting the National Farmers’ Union in our riding next month.


Jamie Schmale, Conservative Party I am a big supporter of local food production. Over the years, I’ve observed more and more people shopping at farmers markets, and tending their own gardens. There are several federal programs supporting intra-family farm transfers and new farmers, including the New Young Farmer Loan, which provides up to $500,000 to young farmers to purchase farms. Specifically, I see opportunities for dairy goats. Global demand for goat milk is increasing every day. There are already many successful dairy goat operations in central Ontario, and I believe there will soon be many more. Mariposa Dairy is a local example of successful goat farming and cheese making. With a recent $1 million FedDev investment to help further its cheese production, Mariposa has plans to expand globally. I have been an active promoter of this industry for years, and I will continue to pursue it if elected as the next Member of Parliament.

FarmING, eNTerTaINmeNT For 127 years the annual Fenelon Fair has brought agriculture, tradition and entertainment together to create an event that appeals to young and old. Many families have been participating for three or four generations. The fair will open Friday, Aug. 7 at 4 pm with The Gable Brothers Midway, Truck and Farm Tractor Pull, and competitive exhibits hall open to the public. Saturday’s program features many traditional elements, including a huge Cattle Show, Goats, Homecraft and Agricultural Exhibits, Midway, Children’s Activities, and Country Music on stage with John Lester and Friends. A popular Saturday afternoon event is the Lawn Tractor and ATV Pull. “Canada’s #1 Demolition Derby,” by Thrill Show Productions is followed by the Country 105 Video dance in the Arena at 9 pm, for those 19 and over. A separate ticket is required. Sunday is “Horse Day,” and includes Pony and Horse Pulls, a Saddle Horse Show and Miniature Horse Show. There will be Sheep competitions, the midway and country music entertainment. On Sunday, Gable Brothers Midway will offer its “Pay One Price” option for rides. As usual, competitive classes are offered for Field Crops, Vegetables, Art, Photography, Baking, Sewing, Knitting, Crafts, Quilting, and even a “Golden Age” section for those 60 and over. The Junior section also offers a wide variety of competitive classes for the kids including Crafts, Baking, Sewing, Flowers, and Art. Roots & RamblingsWe need pollinators—and they need usBy Linda Friend and John Bick, Bobcaygeon and District Horticultural Society Pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insects depend on plant pollen for food. Conversely, almost all plants require these valuable creatures to help them produce seeds and food for others—including us. That’s basic Botany 101 which we all learned in science class. But climate change, pesticides, mites, fungi and loss of habitat are creating massive reductions in global pollinator populations. The Friends of Wilderness Park were pleased to demonstrate the progress of their Pollinator

Patch—planted in the spring of 2014—during our July 11 Garden Tour. Our little patch of a few hundred native plants is not going to reverse pollinator losses on its own. But we hope that as a demonstration plot, it can make others more aware of this critical situation. We invite you to check it out any time this summer at Bobcaygeon’s Wilderness Park. By planting more natural gardens, all of us can provide a safer and more plentiful haven for pollinators and their descendants. A big thank you from Linda Friend and the organizers of the Garden Tour to those who supported this annual event, which raises funds for our society’s efforts to beautify Bobcaygeon. We are especially grateful to Suzanne and Douglas Magee, April and Ric Scott, Mary and Richard Fedy, Randy and Susan Hinton, Chris Rausch, and Gary Lever for sharing their outstanding gardens and yards with visitors from far and wide. Thank you to the volunteers, master gardeners, merchants and vendors who helped to make it another successful tour. CUrve LaKeMkoons and the giant fish

As told by Doug Williams to Julie Kapyrka Remember Shkin (July 10, page 26)? Well, Mkoons was his father. Mkoons means “little bear” in our language. Mkoons was born around 1875. He never went to school but was one of the most intelligent human beings alive. He travelled around the lakes in this area by canoe, both birch bark canoe and dugout canoe. Our people made dugouts too, not many people know that. Mkoons was one of the last ones to have

a dugout canoe. I once asked him where it was. He said it was cracked and old, so he got rid of it by pushing it out into Chemong Lake, where it sank. An interesting story goes, how he went out to go fishing on Chemong Lake one day. Back in those days we did not have casting rods. We used a “hard-line board.” A rectangular piece of wood around which you would string a strong thick fishing line that we got from the general store. You would put this in the water and paddle around. So Mkoons went out and put a copper spinner bait with a bit of buck tail on his line and threw it in the water. In those days Muskies would grow up to 40 pounds in Chemong Lake. Well, he got hooked onto a fish on the north end of the lake. He could tell right away that it was a big fish and he pulled and yanked and pulled and yanked. No matter how hard he tried, he could not get that fish to surface. He struggled and fought to pull that fish up. It dragged him all over the lake. Mkoons hung on and that fish took him to the south end of the lake and then back to the north end again. All day they did this. Mkoons was thinking, “What in the world is going on?” This fish was not fighting like a Muskie. It was not splashing about and not surfacing. Eventually Mkoons got tired. He hadn’t eaten all day because that fish just kept pulling him around. So he decided to tie his line to a tree on an island and leave for a while and gather his strength. So he went home, ate, and then went to bed. The next morning he got up prepared to continue the fight. He paddled out to that island where he had tied off his line and the island was gone. Years later Mkoons told me that he thought that it was the giant serpent that lives in Chemong Lake known to our peoples as “Mizhiibizhoo.” There have been several accounts of encounters with this creature over the years. Down on Rice Lake there is a sacred place known as the Serpent Mounds … but that is another story.

The City of Kawartha Lakes lost one of its guardians on July 25 with the passing of Robert Alexander (Sandy) Wansbrough, after two years of very poor health. Sandy was a founding member and Director of Kawartha Protect Our Water (KPOW), which was formed in 2000 to oppose the Lindsay/Ops Landfill’s expansion to a mega dump. He spearheaded that organization’s environmental watchdog and educational role, monitoring the health of waterways in the CKL. Sandy was instrumental in leaking documents to the newspapers on the pollution (including PCBs) in Sinister Creek, forcing the Ministry of the Environment to take action and begin a clean-up process. He played a vital role educating local students on being good caretakers of our water. KPOW regularly reported its findings to Council, pushing for improvements in environmental protection. After 14 years as guardians, KPOW ceased it’s operations. During most of his life, Sandy was a pillar in the community, who gave unselfishly of his time and knowledge in a whole variety of ways to protect the waterways and wildlife of the Kawartha Lakes. Before and during his involvement with KPOW, he volunteered with Kawartha Region Conservation Authority, Friends of KRCA and Water Watch. He served on the Public Review Committee overseeing operations at the Lindsay/Ops Landfill.

He was also involved with Friends of the Osprey, the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre, Kawartha Lake Stewards and, the St. John’s Ambulance Pet Therapy Program. Sandy had several careers in his lifetime including teacher and farmer. He taught for 30 years at General Vanier Vocational Institute in Oshawa, while also building a farm near Bethany with his family, where they worked the land for 22 years. After retiring, Sandy moved to Sturgeon Lake with his wife, Marg—and began advocating for the welfare of the water, its wildlife and the environment. It became one of the driving forces in his life. Other life-long hobbies included painting watercolours, skiing and flying. He even built his own ultra-light airplane. As an avid downhill skier, he was active in the ski patrol where he was awarded for high standards of safety excellence. Sandy touched many lives in the community, and is already sorely missed.

A Bobcaygeon father and son are hoping for a win-win-win in September as they head for Ecuador to hike up Cotopaxi mountain.

It will be a good bonding experience says Shahzil Mohamed about the impending trip with his father, Shaukat, who owns and manages Bobcaygeon’s Pick N’ Save department store. “It’s nice to be able to do this with a person close to you.” It’s also a good way to see another part of the world. But more importantly, father and son are doing it to raise money for a Save the Children’s program that promotes protection, education, equality and survival for working children in Latin America and Africa. The program also benefits from a Canadian-government grant that matches every donated dollar at a rate of three-to-one. So a $100 donation is actually worth $400 in the field. “It’s nice to be able to give back,” says Shahzil. “We have it so good in this country, and sometimes we forget that others don’t.” Shaukat’s and Shahzil’s challenge will take place on September 12-21, but it won’t be a walk in the park. Cotopaxi, about 50 km south of Quito, is the second highest mountain in Ecuador, reaching a height of 5,897 metres (19,347 feet). It’s also

an active volcano that has erupted more than 50 times since 1738. “I have no doubt Dad will complete the climb,” says Shahzil. “He’s very young at heart, and he likes to push his physical limits. When he sets his mind to it, he gets it done.” It’s the second fund-raising hike the two have done together. They also climbed a mountain in Uganda. Shahzil himself has completed fundraising trips in India (from Mumbai to Goa) and in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. on the blue moon of July 31 for an accomplished portrayal of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the shattered prince of Denmark. The Artistic Director of Driftwood theatre group, D. Jeremy Smith, along with the many other talented actors and crew have created a gem in their unique interpretation of the Bard’s most famous tragedy. But their 21-year mandate to bring Shakespeare to the rural masses is in jeopardy. Like many other artistic groups, Driftwood finds itself underfunded, with the loss of a $25,000 sponsor in the middle of its season. Driftwood theatre group staged the production “in the round.” Murphy’s barn was the perfect setting for the tragic tale of revenge and family mayhem. Despite the hasty indoor set up due to rain, the

actors and stage crew came together to create a dramatic and creatively produced Hamlet. Costuming was very Steam Punk, while centre stage sat an old spring bed that served many purposes—as bed, throne, and balcony. Hamlet, the tragic, haunted prince, is every serious actor’s goal to perform, and Paolo Santalucia was perfect in the role. Jon de Leon was also outstanding as the ghost, and as Claudius, usurper to the Danish throne. One young lad of around age nine was so fully engrossed in the two-hour performance, he could scarcely turn his eyes away or drift into sleep. A Toronto couple with a cottage on Four-Mile Lake have been down on their hands and knees grubbing up the ragweed growing along the shoulder of Hughill Road, which runs east from Baseline Road to the lake. And they would like some help from the City of Kawartha Lakes, from other area residents, or from anybody who cares about the damage ragweed pollen can do to allergy and especially asthma sufferers. The situation is urgent, say Beth and Mike Mares, as the ragweed is about to go to seed in the next week or two, when it will escape into nearby fields and become virtually impossible to control.

So far, they aren’t happy with the city response, and are appealing to anyone who cares to get out and pull up any ragweed they spy along their roadsides by hand (which is relatively easy to do, as your editor knows from experience). Beth says she met with Oliver Vigelius, the city’s operations manager, who told her they don’t have the budget to pull the ragweed by hand. He offered to have weed cutters cut the areas of concern, but Beth says their machines and the uneven nature of the ground mean they have to cut at the six-inch level, which leaves most of the ragweed unaffected. In fact, it removes competitive plants, giving the ragweed—which loves the full sun and dry, gravelly soil of roadsides—a chance to proliferate. The city has also contracted to have some spraying done, but Beth says for some reason they seem to have missed the worst areas, which she and Mike had identified for them. “The ragweed first appeared on Baseline Road and Hugill Road a few years ago,” says Beth. She points out that the city has a bylaw requiring the destruction of ragweed. Ragweed pollen spreads widely, she says, causing adults and children with asthma to have attacks. Among non-asthmatic, allergic people, it causes itchy eyes and noses, difficulty breathing, difficulty sleeping, and/or snoring. Up to a quarter of households have at least one member who will develop an allergy to ragweed if exposed to it, says Beth. The couple is appealing to area residents to “please let the city know that this is important to you, and that you support them in taking heroic measures.” If there are too many plants for you to pull out, notify the local weed inspector, or your councillor.

In the past, hearing instruments amplified sounds of all frequencies equally. This meant that the lower-frequency sounds associated with background noise were given the same emphasis as high-frequency sounds found in conversation. STay CooL, DaDDIo Most of us love the hot summer weather—and spend much of the year waiting for it. But it can cause serious concern for seniors, small children, people with chronic medical conditions (like respiratory problems and heart conditions), and outside workers. The good news is that heat-related issues like dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are preventable. “The elderly are some of the most vulnerable when it comes to the heat, especially if they are experiencing a chronic illness such as a heart condition,” explains Dr. Rosana Pellizzari, Medical Officer of Health. “It is vital to check on family, friends and neighbours to ensure they are remaining cool and are properly hydrated.” In addition, avoid cooking in an oven to keep the temperature in your home down. Closing your blinds is another effective method of keeping the sun out, and keeping the temperature down. Kawartha Lakes EMS offers the following tips for heat emergencies:• Stay inside air-conditioned buildings. If your home

does not have air conditioning, visit a library, community centre or shopping centre.

• Drink water frequently (constantly sipping).• Wear light clothing.• Do very little exercise.• Check on the elderly, small children and the ill. Construction workers and others who work outdoors should try to do these things:• Drink when you’re thirsty.• Keep taking rest breaks in a cool, shady spot. • Use fans.• Wear light-coloured, cotton clothing.• Do the heaviest work in the coolest time of the

day.• Work in the shade.• For heavy work in hot areas, take turns with other workers, so some can rest.• If you travel to a warm area for a new job, you

need time for your body to get used to the heat. Be extra careful the first two weeks on the job.

• If you work in protective clothing, you need more rest breaks. You may also need to check your temperature and pulse rate.

If you think someone is overcome by heat (weak, tired, hot, flushed or unresponsive), call 911 immediately. Move the victim to the shade. Loosen his/her clothes. Wipe or spray his/her skin with cool water and fan him/her. You can use a piece of cardboard or other material as a fan.

moSQUIToeS Mosquitoes collected in Lindsay on July 23 have tested positive for West Nile virus, and the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is urging people to fight the bite of mosquitoes that can spread the virus. “There is no good time or reason to be bitten by mosquitoes,” says Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Environmental Health with the Health Unit. “That’s especially true,” he adds, “with this finding of West Nile virus and as we enter into the peak season for West Nile virus activity in August and September.” The West Nile virus find is not unusual in this area. In both 2013 and 2014, the Health Unit also trapped mosquitoes that tested positive for the disease.

“Typically, the risk of West Nile virus remains in southern Ontario until the first heavy frost in the fall,” Ovcharovich notes. To reduce their risk of West Nile virus, the Health Unit is encouraging area residents to: • Cover up when outside by wearing light-coloured clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, jackets, long pants, hats and socks, especially between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. • Apply federally-registered insect repellent on exposed skin (such as products containing DEET) to limit exposure to mosquitoes.• Clean up and remove any standing water around homes, cottages or campsites. Mosquitoes need stagnant water to lay their eggs, and even small amounts found in bird baths, old tires, barrels and other unused containers will do. • Keep bushes and shrubs clear of overgrowth and debris. Adult mosquitoes like to rest in dense shrubbery.• Turn compost piles regularly.• Make sure windows and door screens fit tightly and do not have holes. Most people who get West Nile Virus do not experience any symptoms, but a small number may develop flu-like symptoms like high fever, severe headache, muscle weakness and stiff neck. In a few cases, people may develop more severe symptoms, including confusion, tremors and sudden sensitivity to light.
