  • THE SCREAMIN’ EVIL BLUES BAND

The Screamin’ Evil Blues Band (SEBB) is a tight, three-piece rock ‘n roll band tipping the “proverbial hat” to traditional, old-school “power-trio” bands that we all recall with youthful affection! With emphasis on tight musicianship and audience entertainment, the Screamin’ Evil Blues Band is solid and framed by the accents that characterize entertaining “power-trio” rock ‘n roll music. But it’s “girl

friendly” too! Danceable, entertaining and easy on the ears!

“Old-school”? You bet! No “space ship” pedalboards, processing, computers - just guys “plugging straight in” and playing good-old-fashioned-roots-blues-based rock ‘n roll!

The Screamin’ Evil Blues Band’s live performances create an energized atmosphere based simply on everyone having a good time! Great music (no one’s complained yet, LOL!), dancing, and entertainment promoting a safe environment for responsible consumption. The band motivates its audience through light-hearted fun and humour (ask about the marshmallow guns for the ladies)! A “rock ‘n roll count jester” approach ensures smiles throughout your establishment or event.

  • ACCOLADES• “You guys were awesome Saturday night! Best band I’ve seen in a long time!

    • “Time to get the word out. People need to see you guys!”

    • “Well, you guys were the unexpected highlight of the night!”

    • “You guys put on an amazing show!”

    • “You guys are hot! The Fire Department called and said we weren’t allowed to have such a hot band on stage...”

    • “Where the f*** did you guys come from? You guys just took this place to a whole new level...”

    • “I heard you guys were good... but I didn’t know you were... GOOD!”

    • “I would to thank you and your bandmates for the tremendous job you did playing for our venue, it was truly off the charts and we would love to have your band back. You guys did a fantastic job entertaining the crowd and what a night it was!”

  • BAND PERSONNELKeith Danby (guitar/vocals) has a dynamic approach making his sound and the band unique and easily identifiable. Forced at around six years of age into Conservatory of Music lessons - which he hated (accordion and don’t ask him ‘bout it), Keith eventually cried/pouted/screamed/plotted/rebelled to get a guitar. With an eclectic career in the entertainment industries, Keith has enjoyed participation in musical groups and business’ for, well, he’s getting old now so we shan’t make him blush too much.

Kevin Pownall (bass/vocals) sonically nails down the foundation of the group bridging the rhythm and bottom end with the music melodies. A veteran of the GTA music scene for far too many years, Kevin’s warped sense of humour fits good with the bands’ disposition of not taking it all too seriously. However, Kevin does “rock” the red sneakers... And the Hiwatt 400 bass amp (one of only two in Canada - we’re confident the other one sucks).

Andre C Mendes (drum kit/vocals) attacks the drums with artful, musical finesse using every part of his kit to create solid rhythmic beats fortified with impressive hair. Also a long time established GTA musician veteran, Andre’s quick wit and smooth style separates him from the troves of wanna-be percussionists that endeavor to emulate drum masters such as Mr. Yamaha, Mr. Roland, and similar associates... Plus, aside from sporting the best drummer hair in the Greater Toronto Area, Mr. Mendes has a pretty smile.

  • PRESSSCREAMIN’ EVIL AND SPEWING OUT GOOD TIMES IN THE ALLEY TONIGHT | TORONTOMOON.CA

By Mike Beggs, Special to TorontoMoon.ca\ MISSISSAUGA \

I haven’t fired a Nerf gun since my kids were little. But that will be one of the props provided when the Screamin’ Evil Blues Band —billing itself as “exceptional talent…wasted” — returns to Caven’s Alley bar tonight. They also use no effects pedals, nor a set list, and they don’t take long breaks.

All of the above is refreshing (in an era when a solo act can sound like a 6-piece), and speaks to the entertainment-first ethos of bassist Kevin Pownall, drummer Andre C Mendes, and lead vocalist/guitarist Keith Danby (originally a drummer, who only started singing about seven years ago upon launching this project).

The band name notwithstanding, they do Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Southern Rock, R&B, and Country along with the Blooze. And you’re likely to hear slightly obscure oldies like Bob Seger’s “Sunspot Baby”, Bad Company’s “Shooting Star”, and Frankie Ford’s “You Talk Too Much” alongside staples like David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust”, Jimi Hendrix’ Red House”, and The Stray Cat’s “Stray Cut Strut”. Though Danby can really deliver on a languid Blues solo, most of the night is reserved for rhiffing (think Georgia Satellites, or Neil Young with Crazy Horse).

As he explains it, they’re not trying to reproduce the songs verbatim, just picking ones within his register and playing them with passion.

Sometimes known to wear fuzzy bunny slippers onstage, Danby (a Soo native) was influenced by Kim Mitchell, Johnny Rotten, and Jeff Beck alike. And he hates “the typecasting Toronto people tend to get into around midnight,” as to whether you’re a Blues player or a Country player.

“We just play what we want, when we want, how we want. And the people seem like it,” he adds.

For sure, the band fits the venue at this friendly, relaxed place.

  • PRESSTONIGHT’S MOONSHINE JAM HOST EXEMPLIFIES ECLECTIC NATURE OF CLUB | TORONTOMOON.CA

By Mike Beggs, Special to TorontoMoon.ca\ OAKVILLE \

Although it is very eclectic musically, I wouldn’t have thought that Oakville’s Moonshine Café would be a natural fit on a Monday night for high-energy antics-laden outfit the Screamin’ Evil Blues Band.

So I was surprised to see this past summer that the group appears to have now become part of the regular rotation of hosts for the weekly Monday night jam in the club at 137 Kerr Street, returning tonight for another stint in the role, since normally Roots-Rock is more the nature of previous and other ongoing hosts such as the Port Credit Review Band and Catherine Harrison.

Our west-GTA correspondent Mike Beggs told us a little about the group, headed up by singer-guitarist Keith Danby in a report back in June, when the outfit was doing a gig at Caven’s Alley in Mississauga.

Mike was at pains to note that despite their name the group is actually super versatile, doing everything from “obscure oldies like Bob Seger’s “Sunspot Baby”, Bad Company’s “Shooting Star” and Frankie Ford’s “You Talk Too Much” alongside staples like David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust”, Jimi Hendrix’ Red House”, and The Stray Cat’s “Stray Cat Strut”.”

Perhaps that’s the appeal here, because the eclectic musical tastes of owner John Marlatt have led to a pretty disparate group of acts performing in the room, from award winning Roots and Blues icons to Punk, new Wave, Jazz, Country and pretty much any other genre you can name.

In addition to the fact that tonight’s hosting trio, which also includes Kevin Pownall on bass and drummer Andre C Mendes, also has the experience and talent to back pretty much anyone on anything, Danby is an affable and unpretentious fellow with the right persona to be a welcoming host.-Gary 17, TorontoMoon.ca
