ProMIS™ Surgical Simulator

ProMIS™ is unique in combining virtual

and real worlds in the same system.

Users learn, practice and measure

their proficiency with real instruments

on real models with real haptics and

real context.

Validated

The award-winning ProMIS™ has become thesimulator of choice for leading skills centersworldwide. Studies have validated ProMIS'effectiveness in training and assessinglaparoscopic skill - including on FLS Tasks and with robotic instrumentation.

Preferred by users

Studies show that users prefer ProMIS™ over VR simulators. "Scores for ProMIS™ weresignificantly higher (than the VR simulator) foroverall realism, thread behavior, reflection ofclinical ability, and overall educational value."(Fellinger, et al, SAGES 2006 P224)

Integrates easily into the Curriculum

ProMIS™ is the only simulator that adapts to local curriculum. Administrators and tutorscan adapt the ProMIS Basic Skills Program to suit local needs and can use the unique OpenModule to add new Tasks. Proficiency levels can be set for different groups.

Measures and predicts FLS performance

A new Module enables the SAGES/ACSFundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery program to be used in ProMIS™ and for users to get objective and effective measurement ofperformance on FLS Tasks*. Users simply insertFLS Tasks in ProMIS™ and get the standardProMIS™ metrics and video recording; thenetworked user records system offers a unique opportunity to gather user data on FLS performance.

Laparoscopic Skills Modules

As well as Laparoscopic Colectomy, ProMIS™ offers a Basic Laparoscopic Skills curriculum, including:

• Laparoscope Orientation

• Instrument Handling

• Dissection

• Intracorporeal Suturing and Knot-tying

Modules are also available to measure FLSTasks and to train in techniques of specificprocedures. An Open Module allows users to measure their own research Tasks or Tasks in an existing curriculum.

Why ProMIS™ LC?

Most people with colorectal cancer will havesome type of surgery. The ProMIS™ LC Simulatoraims to help reduce the risk of surgery byincreasing the accessibility and effectiveness of training for surgeons.

Real haptics and real context

ProMIS™ LC is the first simulator to integratevirtual reality with real haptics and realinstruments. Surgeons use the full range of real laparoscopic instruments to completethe procedure, interacting with a mix of virtual and physical models.

Show, Practice, Measure

ProMIS™ LC is built on a 'Show, Practice,Measure' model of training. Surgeons are guided through the procedure step-by-step, and at the end are given feedback on theirperformance. As they work, the surgeon'sinstruments - and hand - are tracked as they perform the procedure.

It is this combination of real and virtual worldsthat enables ProMIS™ LC to deliver a highlyrealistic and engaging learning experience.

Limitless practice

Unlike traditional training, ProMIS™ LC provides standard tutorial and performancemeasurement and affords an opportunity topractice and run courses anytime, anywhere.

Networked user records system

User records and group performance reports are automatically generated and may beaccessed remotely.

A (wireless) networked system enables datafrom more than one ProMIS™ simulator to begathered quickly and easily on a single server. Proficiency levels can be set for differentgroups and can be set remotely, for a singlesimulator or for a networked group.

ProMIS™ LC LapColectomy Procedure

Users practice on a physical, anatomically correct model withdefined surgical planes - with IMA,pulsation, ureter, etc

Augmented Reality - 3D animationsand images - are overlaid on thephysical model to provide instruction, guidance and measurement

Users must deal with issues suchbleeding which are VR overlaid onthe haptic model. The bleeding isstopped using the real energy device

Irrigation and suction areperformed through virtual reality and real instruments

Whether done HALS or purelylaparoscopically, real instruments are used, including energy devicesand staplers

In Step 3, once the tissue has beendissected, the user identifies the IMAthrough haptic feel - with eitherinstrument or hand

The colon is externalized to resect the tumor and insert the anvil of the circular stapler

On completing the procedure, users review performance results

In Step 1, a virtual small bowel isretracted when the bodyform is tilted.A video shows how the step works in a real procedure and providesadditional guidance.

Onscreen graphics provide guidancefor dissection, transaction andretraction and enable performance measurement

Sutures are used to secure the anvil. Anastomosis is created intra-corporeally

And examine the real model for performance
