How do I attend?

• Send two musical scores of your composition,along with two CD recordings and an entryform to: BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’Competition,14 Lakeside, PO BOX 105,Rochester, Kent ME2 4BE.

• Entries should last no longer than 5 minutes.

• There are no restrictions oninstrumentation, which may includeacoustic and/or electronic instrumentsand computer-generated sounds.

• Scores should be no larger than A4.

• Entrants may enter only one composition.

• Entry forms are available frombbc.co.uk/proms, by calling 020 7765 5575or emailing [email protected].

InspireIf you’re aged 12 to 18 and you write your own,original music, Inspire is here to kick-start yourcareer as a composer! Brought to you by theBBC Proms, and incorporating the YoungComposers’ Competition, the annual Inspirescheme will provide you with opportunities toshare ideas, participate in workshops, meetother young composers, get feedback anddevelop your own musical creativity.

Best of all, the whole thing’s free!

Young Composers’ CompetitionNow in its 11th year, the prestigious BBC PromsInspire Young Composers’ Competition givesyoung composers aged 12 to 18 a chance toget their music heard by a wider audience.

Enter your own, original piece of music —no more than five minutes long — to theBBC Proms judging panel, who’ll choosethe winning compositions, which are then

performed at the Young Composers’ Concertduring the BBC Proms season and broadcastworldwide on BBC Radio 3.

The overall winner will also receive acommission to be performed and recordedby BBC musicians at the 2010 Inspire events,and will get to work with top composers andmusicians in a series of workshops to developtheir commission.

There are no restrictions on the type ofmusic you can enter — it can be classical, jazz,pop, instrumental, vocal, anything you like.The only condition is that it has to be writtendown, as someone else will perform it if youget to the final.

Everyone who enters the Young Composers’Competition can attend Inspire Day, a dayof workshops that will challenge and inspireyou to compose in new ways, in London on14 August.

What is Inspire and the YoungComposers’ Competition?

The BBC Proms, founded in 1895, is theworld’s biggest classical music festival andtakes place for two months every summerat London’s Royal Albert Hall. The five BBCorchestras and the BBC Singers providethe backbone of the season; and theworld-class musicians, informal atmosphereand cheap tickets are just a few of thereasons people keep coming back yearafter year. Every concert is broadcast liveon BBC Radio 3 and online, and many arebroadcast on BBC Television

About the BBC Proms

Unsure whether to enter the YoungComposers’ Competition? Have you thoughtabout composing your own music but neveractually put pen to paper? Or are you a keencomposer looking to share your ideas anddiscover new ones? Would you like to knowmore about how to use rhythm, harmony,melody and form — and how to make themyour own?

Held between February and April, theComposer Labs are a chance to join musiciansfrom the BBC orchestras and BBC Singers, topcomposers and the BBC Proms Learning teamin a day of music making, exploration anddiscovery. Bring your instrument, your latestidea, a rhythm, a melody, a finished work or justa friend. Try things out, question the experts.

Attendance at a Lab isn’t compulsory in orderto enter the Young Composers’ Competition(or vice versa), but if you’re thinking ofentering, they’re a great way to give youan inspirational kick-start!

Whether you’ve been composing for years oryou’re just starting out, if you are aged 12 to18the BBC Proms Composer Labs are there foryou to come and explore, push your musicalboundaries and discover something new.
