Description: Proloquo2Go is an award-winning augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that provides a “voice” to over 50,000 people around the world, who are unable to speak or have difficulty speaking.
How it works: Featuring natural-sounding voices, speech can be generated by tapping buttons with symbols or typing using an on-screen keyboard with word prediction. This allows Proloquo2Go to be adapted to suit the needs of a wide range of users with varying literacy levels.
How does it impact people’s lives?: 60 to 80% of users and family members report improvements in communication, in independence, in behavior, in the atmosphere at home, and in general wellbeing.
History: Released in April 2009, Proloquo2Go was the first full-featured communication app on iPhone. In 2010, Proloquo2Go was optimized for iPad. In January 2011, Proloquo2Go won a prestigious BETT Award. In 2012, AssistiveWare added the world’s first genuine American and British children’s Text to Speech voices co-developed with Acapela Group.
Who uses it?:
Cost: Proloquo2Go costs $219.99 on the US App Store. The price is higher than other apps because it serves a niche market. Revenue covers license costs for voices, symbols and a grammar engine as well as 24/7 email support and continued development and innovation. AssistiveWare has provided 13 major free updates over the last 4 years.
