    A.That men always ought

to pray: Man is createdwith a spiritual instinct, soprayer often comesnaturally. Yet obstacles

come in the way of effectiveand constant prayer, soJesus knew we needed tobe both taught andencouraged always . . . topray.

    B.Jesus does not mean that

we should always have ourknees bent and eyesclosed in prayer; but we

    N.What is prayer?

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    10/47

    Jesus said that it is

    necessary that weALWAYS pray.

    1. Prayer is talking to

    God.

    (Mat 6:5-6 KJV) And

when thou p rayest ,thou shal t not be as

    the hypocr i tes are:

    for they love to pray

stand ing in thesynagogues and in

    the co rners of the

s treets , that they may

    be seen of men.

Ver i ly I say un to you,

    They have their

    reward . {6} Bu t thou ,when thou p rayest ,

shut thy doo r , pray to

thy Father which is insecret ; and thy

    Father which seeth in

    secret shal l reward

thee openly .Jesus isnt saying that

    we should never pray

with other people orthat we shouldnt pray

    out loud. His whole

point is that we ought to

    be praying to God.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    13/47

    Sometimes when we

pray in front of otherpeople, we can fall into

    a trap of praying to

    the people than

    praying toGod. Sometimes we

    can find ourselves

    trying to send a

    message to someone in

    the group with our

    prayer.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    14/47

    Jesus told us that when

we pray we ought toaddress our prayers to

    GodOur Father

    which art in heaven

    2. Its the heart thatcounts, not the words.

    (Mat 6:7KJV) But

when ye pray, useno t vain repet i t ions ,

    as the heathen do :

    for they think that

they shal l be heardfor thei r much

    speaking.

    Memorized prayersI

think that its okay toknow some memorized

    prayers, like the Lords

    Prayer. But if the

words are just wordsand dont mean

    anything to you, theres

    no value.

I think we can also fall

    into a trap of thinking

that if we keep going on

and on and on with ourprayer, that somehow

    that is more spiritual.

    Elijah himself is a great

example of the power ofprayer, not because of

    his long prayers, but

    because of his fervent

    prayers.

    Elijah had a

showdown with theprophets of Baal on

    Mount Carmel. They

    all got together and

agreed to each asktheir god to send

    fire to consume their

    sacrifice. The

    prophets of Baal

    yelled and danced all

    day long.

    dust, and licked up

the water that wasin the trench.

    3. Prayer is not about

    informing God

(Mat 6:8 KJV) Be no tye therefo re l ike un to

them : for you r Father

knoweth what th ingsye have need of,

befo re ye ask him .

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    27/47

    Sometimes we fall into

thinking that we have totell God allllllllabout

    our needs. We will go

    into deep detail as we

pray, as if we are tellingGod something He

    didnt know. Perhaps

    we have this idea that

    God is frantically

    taking notes because

    the things were telling

Him are new toHim. Not so.

    4. Prayer involves

    yielding to Gods will

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    28/47

    (Mat 6:9-

10 KJV) A fter thismanner therefo repray ye: Our Father

    wh ich art in heaven,

Hal lowed be thyname. {10} Thy

    kingdom come. Thy

w ill be done in earth ,

as it is in heaven .

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    29/47

    One of the goals in

prayer is to see that thethings on earth become

    conformed to Gods

    will. It is not about

demanding that ourwillbe done, but Hiswill be

    done. The goal of

    prayer is not to shape

    the world a little more

    into the picture that we

want it to be, but to be a

part of seeing thingswork out the way that

    God wants them to be.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    30/47

It is not a lack of faith

to say, if it be Yourwill. This

    is exactly what were

    supposed to say.

    5. Prayer involves askingfor needs

    (Mat 6:11 KJV) Give

us th is day our dai lybread.

    Even though we dont

    need to inform God

about what our needsare, God does want us

    to ask.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    31/47

Why do we need to ask

when He already knowswhat we need?

    God wants us to learn

    to come to Him and

depend upon Him tomeet our needs. He

    wants us to see the

connection of being inneed and seeing Him

    respond and meet our

    needs. He wants us to

    learn to depend uponHim.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    32/47

    Somehow, God

withholds some thingsbecause He is waiting

for us to come to Him

    and ask Him for them.

(James 4:2KJV) yet ye havenot, because ye ask

not.Our lives will start torun the way God

    intends them to run

when we learn todepend upon Him.

    Suppose you looked

at the gas gage inyour car and saw

    that you were

    beginning to run out

of fuel. Even thoughthe gas prices are

    pretty low right now,

    you decide to save a

    few bucks and fill up

    your gas tank with

    something else. So

you park the car inthe front yard, pull

    out the garden hose,

    and fill your tank

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    34/47

    with water. Will

your car run verywell?I dont think

    so.

    We were designed to

run best when ourtanks are filled with

    the things of God,

when our lives aredependent upon Him.

    6. Prayer involves

    confession of sin

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    35/47

    (Mat 6:12-

13a KJV) And forg iveus our debts , as weforg ive ou r deb tors .

And lead us not in to

temptat ion , butdeliver us from evi l :

    If we are truly praying

to God, if we are trulyaware of His presence

    as we are praying, we

    will realize our great

    need for forgiveness.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    36/47

Sin is the very thing that

    will cut off ourcommunication with

    God.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    (Isa 59:1-2

KJV) Behold, theLORD'S hand is notshortened, that itcannot save; neither

his ear heavy, that itcannot hear: {2} Butyour iniquities haveseparated betweenyou and your God,and your sins havehid his face from

    you, that he will nothear.

the glo ry , fo r ever.

    Amen.

We talked a few weeksago about the ten lepers

    who were healed, but

only one returned togive thanks (Luke

    17:11-19). Our time of

    talking with God ought

    to always includethanks, praise, and

    adoration.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    40/47

I believe there is a sense

in which we are able toexperience Gods

presence in our l ives in a

    greater measure as we

learn to honestly andsincerely give H im

    praise.

(Psa 22:3 KJV) Butthou art holy, O thouthat inhabitest thepraises of Israel.

(Psa 22:3 ICB) Yousit as the Holy One.The praises of Israelare your throne.

  • 8/10/2019 Projecto Lucas 18

    41/47

    I think that as we

    praise Him, weexperience His

    presence, He is King

    on the throne in our

    lives.

we lose heart. We becomediscouraged and then slackoff in prayer.

    B.One of the most difficult

aspects of prayer ispersevering when it seemsthat God is not answering.

C.It is easy to lose heartin

prayer because prayer ishard work that we too oftenapproach lightly. In Colossians 4:12, Paulpraises a man namedEpaphras because hewas always laboring

fervently . . . in prayers.Paul knew that prayer washard work that requiredfervent labor.
