What is projection mapping?

● Using projectors to map light onto surfaces● Turns any 3D object into an interactive display● Use of motion graphics and/or creative coding to “replace” a surface● Can add motion to static objects

Types of Projection Mapping● Video Jockeying (VJ-ing)

○ Live events being augmented by projections - fully dynamic, controlled live, consists of

pre-programmed videos and combinations of

effects & effect overlays

○ Often interactive to music (ex. DJ’s and music festivals)

● Theatrical○ Preset projections and scenes are “cued” in set

order

○ Ex. dance scene backgrounds

● Static/Interactive○ A programmed display that loops or interacts

with the environment and viewers

● Video○ Segmented show is presented as a single fluid

video

○ Not interactive

Some Things to Consider When Creating Projection Maps● Viewing angle of audience● Size and shape of object/landscape/building● Location and environmental factors (indoors/outdoors)● Type of animated content

Turning a 2D Surface into “3D”

1. Scan and plot out the surface2. Skew and distort the 2D surface with specialized software

a. Ensure that content will look 3 dimensional when projected onto surface3. Develop the animated content
