Suggested Areas of Redesign

Investigate this website to research information for your project, then fill out the form below for 4 different systems. http://mariana68.wix.com/bl-humanbodyredesign#!body-systems/coqm

Fill this out for each system:

Body System: _______________________________________________

Which area(s) do you think need improvement in this system?

⃞ Efficiency (How fast it does its job.)

⃞ Communication (How well it interacts with other systems)

⃞ Location (Where it is, and is that location a problem)

⃞ Performance (How well it does its job and/or does it break down easily)

⃞ Other: _____________________________________________________________________________

What is the problem you see? Why? Example: "When you get a cut, blood takes a long time to clot. This makes it so you could lose a fair amount of blood and risk death. It also opens up the possibility of infections and other complica-tions."

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What do you propose? Example: "I propose to redesign blood so that it clots faster and/or as soon as it is exposed to sunlight."

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What consequences might your redesign carry to other organs or body systems?

Brain Storm

With your team, brainstorm ideas of possible redesign areas in the human body. Use the blogs your team mates have already submitted. Since evolution “never starts with an entirely blank drawing board, but works by modi-fying things that already exists” , you must use the existing design of the hu-man body as a basis for every proposed re-design. List all ideas that seem interesting to you. This is about you deciding which one is the

most promising. They could look something like:

Ideas:

Roles and Responsibilities:

Student taking this role.

If a role changes, include

the name and date of

Editor: This student is in charge of organizing the final products of the

project. That doesn't mean technical details, but of making sure that the

project meets the standards.

This student checks the rubric several times and monitors progress to-

wards completion.

Secretary: This person takes notes whenever the group meets and keeps

track of group data/sources/etc. This person distributes these notes to

the rest of the group highlighting sections relevant for their parts of the

project.

This does not mean this is the only student that writes.

Checker: Someone needs to double-check data, bibliographic sources, or

graphics for accuracy and correctness. This person reads all portions of

the project and verifies that the information reflects the group’s consen-

sus.

This student is responsible for keeping everyone on task and moving for-

ward.

This students submits the drafts of all work, having verified that all links

shared with the teacher and group are working.

Press Secretary: This person is responsible for the technical details of

the final product and is ready to summarize the group's progress and find-

ings to the teacher and to other groups.

This student submits a daily report that tells the teacher exactly what

was accomplished that day.

Team Design Brief:

Complete the roles & responsibilities chart as a team and then begin the rough draft of

your design brief. The final draft should be typed separately.

Human Body 2.0– Rough Draft

Choose one idea from your brainstorm to develop fully.

Research and prepare a well-informed written paper providing informative and convincing ar-

guments that your re-designed organ or body system is important and more efficient for its

intended purpose than the original design. This is your outline. Filling this paper in is not

enough to convince us.

1. State the Problem:

2. Describe the original design (form and function):

3. Identify the targeted area of improvement (form and/or function):

4. What are the three main reasons you have to propose the change?

Page 11: Project Checkpointsjwolfrey.weebly.com/uploads/3/0/0/1/30010059/human... · What is your solution (re-design) – change in location, structure, improved communication, the way it

5. What is your solution (re-design) – change in location, structure, improved

communication, the way it works, etc?

6. What is the predicted outcome of your redesign?

7. Why is your re-design more efficient?

8. How does your redesign help eliminate common problems associated with the

organ or body system?

9. What would be needed in order for your re-design to work?

10. What will you say in response to your opposition?

11. What will you include in your presentation?

Final Draft

Complete in a separate typed document. Use everything from your rough draft and follow

the instructions below.

How to write a well-informed written paper providing informative and convincing arguments that your re-

designed organ or body system is important and more efficient for its intended purpose than the original

design.

Questions 1-9 in your outline should be developed into paragraphs. DO NOT copy the questions.

Paragraph 1 – Includes the answers to questions 1-3. Includes a direct quote from a respectable source

(CITE IT score 13+) when “describing the original design”

Paragraph 2 – Includes the answer to question 4, states the reasons and the why’s of each. Include direct

quotes.

Paragraph 3 – Includes the answer to questions 5 and 6

Paragraph 4 – Includes the answers to questions 7 and 8

Paragraph 5 – Includes the answers to question 9. May include direct quotes.

Paragraph 6 – Includes the answer to question 10

Concluding paragraph – Restates problem, redesign idea and why your solution is the best possible an-

swer.

Technical Drawings, Decision Matrix & Model of Redesign

Technical Drawings– Each student makes one individually— On Graph Paper

- Orthographic Drawings ( Side, Front, Top View & 3D View)

- Drawings should be annotated ( materials, descriptions, how it works)

Decision Matrix

- Criteria & Constraints Listed

- Filled out & calculated for best design

Model of Redesign

- 3D model ( cardboard, poster with 3d aspects, virtual, clay...etc.)
