One of its aims is to raise awareness about what is being done to provide a safer, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system for South Africa. Many residents in the N2 Gateway communities rely on public transport to get to and from where they need to be. 61-year-old Mpumelo Siwundla and 27-year- old Alfred Bonasa are disabled and recently moved into their new homes in Delft Precinct 3 & 5. Despite their disabilities, the pair agrees that getting around – inside and outside of their homes – is much easier now. “I believe everything happens at the right time,” says Mpumelo. In September, he and his son moved from Joe Slovo, Zone 17 where they’d lived for 22 years. “Living in a shack with a disability was a challenge; I had to rely on others to help me do the simplest things like cooking or using the bathroom. Thanks to railings in the bathroom and a ramp that leads to my front door, I can do most things by myself.” When he needs to be out and about, Mpumelo says he uses a taxi cab service to get around. “When I lived in Langa I got to know the driver. Even though I have moved to Delft he is still willing to pick me up from here and take me where I need to be.” In August, Alfred moved from Tsunami into his house. He wears a prosthetic after one of his legs was amputated following a car accident in 2009. “Living in a house that caters for my disability really makes a difference. There is more than enough space for me to move around, and the ramp at my front door makes moving into and out of my home much easier.” Alfred says he owns a car, but is unable to drive it. “My friends are very helpful, and are happy to drive me around.” Meanwhile, able-bodied Bulelwa Fiphoza (39) says she finds public transport to and from Delft Precinct 3 & 5 easily accessible. “My six children live with me, and we regularly use public transport.” “My oldest who is 17 attends a school in Khayelitsha and catches a bus that drops him off right next to the school. My younger son’s school is in Tsunami and he travels to and from school by taxi. I spend about R200 on a monthly bus ticket for my older boy and about R4 a day on a taxi for my younger one.”
