Waterkloof Air Force Base Continued...Located on the west coast of South Africa in Pretoria, Waterkloof Air Force Base is headquarters for the South African Air Force (SAAF) Presidential Squadron, and is the largest operational SAAF base.

Waterkloof has an 11,000 foot (3,350 meter) runway and a secondary 6,000 foot (1,500 meter) runway used by a wide variety of military aircraft to perform daily missions. Aircraft permanently based at Waterkloof include the Dassault Falcon 900, Boeing 737-700 BBJ, Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Saab Gripen, and the CASA CN-235.

Waterkloof is also used for humanitarian operations and can accommodate commercial air traffic. In the summer of 2010, the base saw additional air and ground traffic as a cargo hub for World Cup 2010.

Waterkloof’s main runway was closed from 2006 until late October 2009 as part of a major base upgrade project. The first phase included runway and taxiway reconstruction.. The runway was re-opened on October 29, 2009 by South African President, Jacob Zuma, shown at left receiving a Carmanah wireless controller from Carmanah distributor Vincent Joubert.

The upgrade project included installation of a new solar LED runway lighting system from Carmanah Technologies Corporation, with installation executed by local Carmanah distributor, SunSolutions. Installation was completed in just a few days by a work crew without special skills or expertise. No trenching or digging was required so disruption to air traffic due to a lengthy construction period was minimized.

Vincent Joubert of SunSolutions, who supervised the installation, commented on the speed and simplicity of the project: “The entire installation of several hundred lights was simple, needing just a few days of labour for a small work crew. The Carmanah lights integrated with the existing systems, and only minimal training was required for the base personnel to learn to operate the lights.”

Joubert also attested to the reliability of the Carmanah solar LED airfield lighting system, reporting that shortly after the system was installed “...Waterkloof Air Force Base experienced an overwhelming electrical storm and we are happy to inform that the Carmanah solar lighting system was unaffected. The lights performed flawlessly.”
