Personnel Changes since last WorkshopPersonnel Changes since last Workshop
Personnel update:– Richard Lynch has rejoined the team as the JSC Systems Engineer– Robby Estep has taken over as the MSS Manager– Ray Ohl is the ISIM optical lead– Hal Bremmer is the project’s scheduling lead– Claudia Krogel has joined the Mission Systems Team– Lisa Link is the point of contact in the CM Office

General: All observatory components, except for the spacecraft, have successfully completed their
preliminary design reviews ISIM CDR held in March
All science instruments have successfully completed their critical design reviews LRD moving to June 2014; Mission CDR moving to March 2010
Will have 7 months of critical path slack; so the ship date only slipped by 8 months Maintain ISIM deliveries Maintain near term OTE, Sunshield and Spacecraft milestones
Not sure about plans for the next Partner’s Workshop with the upcoming major reviews Observatory:
Lower level Spacecraft PDR’s underway JWST full scale core test is underway Completed the Sunshield Membrane Management System (MMS) delta PDR First spacecraft simulator delivered to the ISIM software lab at GSFC
Ground System: The Ka band upgrades required to support JWST L&EO and normal operations have been
completed at the DSN Canberra and Goldstone Sites NGAS hosted an open house to mark the grand opening of the “Webb Telescope Control Room” in
M8. The control room will be operated using CCTS hardware and software

Telescope: ATK Operations:
Bonding of flight and pathfinder OTE Primary Mirror Backplane Support Structure (PMBSS) continues
Tinsley operations are continuing: Five PM segments have been shipped to Ball Secondary Mirror has been delivered to Ball TM1 (Tertiary Mirror 1) delivered to Ball The remaining flight primary, secondary and tertiary mirrors are in various stages of rough
polishing and smooth out grinding
Ball operations: Four Primary Mirror Segment Assembly (PMSA) have been built up to configuration 3 (the full
PMSA configuration) Received, inspected and cleaned Tertiary Mirror at Ball Received last 4 flight Delta Frames from Axsys; JWST work at Axsys is complete!
MSFC XRCF Operations: The A1 and EDU PMSA’s cryo vac test has been completed

Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM)– Successfully completed ISIM Level CDR in March– Good progress on other ISIM components, ISIM Command and Data Handling (IC&DH) unit,
ISIM Remote Services Unit (IRSU), structure, etc Instruments:
– MIRI- MIRI Verification Model (VM) completed it’s second cryo test- Selected flight and spare detectors and built into Focal Plane Module’s (FPM’s)- Instrument shield (for cryo cooler) concept review held last week
– NIRSpec- Selection of flight detectors agreed to by NASA & ESA- Instrument CDR successfully held- Development Model (DM) cryo testing underway- Flight Model (FM) integration underway
– NIRCam- Selected flight detectors for NIRCam- Completed bonding and vibration testing of the NIRCam Engineering Test Unit (ETU)
Optical Bench– FGS
- 3 of 4 FGS flight detectors (including the spare) have been selected- Completed first ETU cryo pupil illumination test- All ETU hardware installed on optical bench or in formal testing

Cost increases Late ISIM deliveries Low cost reserves Problematic use of the Space Cargo Transporter System (SCTS)
– The project has included costs for a JWST unique shipping container in this year’s budget– Working with NGAS and Arianespace on requirements
NIRCam Wave Front Error– Proceeding with the redesigned bonded lens mount design
- Review held on May 14th
– Developed a new alignment plan, which allows for greater accuracy both during build up and at the module level Meeting Cryo Cooler allocations with required margins
– Baselined MIRI shield– Concept review held last week
Microshutter shock survivability– Qualification unit over tested and failed– Established new testing approach and levels– Testing currently underway at Astrium
Rebuilt ASIC cost and schedule– New ASIC’s will be ready in the November 2009 to March 2010 timeframe
MIRI FPE noise issues Primary Mirror A1 actuator gear motor failure
