MADD Canada’s 29 th annual Project Red Ribbon campaign to promote sober driving throughout the holiday season is underway. Running from November 1 st to January 2 nd , the campaign raises awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, particularly during the holiday season when social calendars are full and the risk of impaired driving is high. Red ribbons are distributed to Canadians to tie on their vehicles, keychains, purses, briefcases or backpacks as a symbol of their commitment to always drive sober. The symbolic ribbons also serve as a tribute to the thousands of Canadians who are killed and injured in impairment-related crashes each year. This year’s Project Red Ribbon campaign features the story of Dean “DJ” Hancock, a young man from Sudbury, Ontario who was killed by an impaired driver in August 2014, while on his way home from a hockey try-out. “With DJ’s tragic story, and the stories of so many other victims and survivors of impaired driving as our motivation, MADD Canada volunteers will be out in force this holiday season, handing out red ribbons and reminding people about the dangers and consequences of impaired driving,” said MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates, whose stepson Nicholas Coates was killed by an impaired driver in 2013. The Simple Yet Powerful Symbolism of Our Red RibbonAs i look at the simplicity of MADD Canada’s red ribbon, i think of the powerful symbol it represents, and the complexity of its meaning. That simple red ribbon represents my step-son, nicholas and all victims of impaired driving. i close my eyes and i see the devastation that this 100% preventable crime has inflicted on so many of us. i shed a tear as i remember the many faces of the loved ones i have met at our national Conference for Victims of impaired Driving since losing nicholas.

Each of us has become part of a club to which no one wants to belong. I see the sacrifices that every injured person must endure as they struggle through each day and as they mourn who they used to be. Yet through all this devastation and hurt, I see hope and strength that together we can end impaired driving.

On November 1, I had the pleasure of attending our 29th National Project Red Ribbon launch in Sudbury, Ontario. This year’s campaign features

the image and story of Dean “DJ”Hancock, a young man who was returning home from a hockey try-out when he was killed by an impaired driver.

At that event, I saw a reflection of myself and my family. I stood by helpless and the tears flowed as I watched DJ’s mom, Kim, his dad, Dean and sister, Jaymie-Lyne stand together, holding each other as Kim described that devastating day when her precious son lost his life. Like so many before him, DJ’s life was ripped away because a person made a selfish choice to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired.

I relived my own nightmare of the day we lost Nicholas, and I remembered the promise I made

to him. The promise that I would find a way to stop impaired driving. I thought of all the tears, heartache, hard work and determination it takes for a family to find a new normal and to move forward each day. It was then I vowed, once again, to work harder, and be more diligent on your behalf. On behalf of Nicholas, DJ and all victims and their families.

As I think about the victims of this senseless crime and all those who are still broken from their loss, we must stand together, strong. We must ensure that each victim will always have an identity; that they will continue to live within our memories and our hearts; that we provide a voice for those who can no longer speak for themselves.

So, as we head into this holiday season, let us all remember our loved ones and honour their memories by speaking their names and telling their stories. Please join me and my family this holiday season to light a candle that will honour those who are no longer with us, those who are injured and all of us who are left behind. Together we are stronger, together we will win this fight against impaired driving.

Happy Holidays to you and your families, stay strong, and know we are sending our love and strength your way.

Allstate Canada Puts a Charitable Spin on ‘Take Our Kids to Work Day’ every november, Allstate Canada supports the ‘Take our Kids to Work Day’ initiative by offering employees’ children the opportunity to spend a day in the office and learn more about their parent or guardian’s career, while being introduced to different lines of the business and various roles in the organization.

“Since giving back to the community is such an important part of our corporate culture at Allstate, we like to share this with the students

in addition to showing them things like how our claims team works,” says Adrianne Sullivan-Campeau, Vice-President Human Resources, Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. “As MADD Canada is one of our most important and our longest standing sponsorship initiatives, we dedicate a portion of the day to educating the kids about our partnership and MADD Canada’s mission and purpose. We also get them involved in Project Red Ribbon by having them come together to help us prepare our annual campaign mail-outs for customers.”

In addition to the great feeling that comes with giving back and being part of such an important cause, the students have the opportunity to earn one hour of community service towards their high school community involvement requirement.

Allstate Canada has always encouraged employees to donate their time and energy to helping MADD Canada, in addition to other worthwhile causes. It’s a passion they hope to instill in this next generation.

Party Guest or Party Host, MADD Canada Has Tips To Help Keep Everyone Safe Whether you’re the party guest or the party host this holiday season, there is lots you can do to help prevent impaired driving.

Party Guests: If you are going to an event or club, or just attending quiet celebrations with family and friends, always have a plan in place if you are going to be drinking:

• Take a cab or public transit.

• Arrange for a designated driver.

• Plan to spend the night.

Party Hosts: If you are hosting a party, think about how you can ensure your guests don’t drive impaired:

• Make sure you have food and non-alcoholic/low alcoholic beverages available. (Check out the MADD Virgin Drinks option, featured on Page 14.)

• Serve drinks yourself, rather than have guests serve themselves, so you can monitor how much your guests have been drinking.

•Don’t serve alcohol to anyone who is intoxicated.

• Know how your guests are getting home and who is driving. Use #TAXI / The Ride or other transportation services to arrange rides for guests and be prepared to have intoxicated guests spend the night.

• Stop serving alcohol long before you expect the party to break up.

• Keep track of your own alcohol consumption. The more you drink, the more difficult it will be for you to anticipate problems, supervise the event and intervene to avoid potential problems.

Planning some sober driving options only takes a little bit of time and it can prevent a tragedy.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday season!

RTL-Westcan Decals Honour Victims, Raise Awarenessin addition to its role as a lead sponsor of MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program and Project Red Ribbon campaign, RTL-Westcan group of Companies’ innovative awareness efforts are bringing the sober driving message to millions of motorists throughout Western Canada and ontario.

New decals on RTL-Westcan vehicles will feature impaired driving victim Danille Kerpan.

In 2012, the bulk transport company which operates in Western Canada, the Northwest Territories and Ontario, began putting decals with a powerful anti-impaired driving message on its fleet of truck trailers. The decals display the name and photo of a victim of impaired driving and messaging that encourages motorists to call 911 if they suspect a driver is impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. The first decals, placed on 40 trailers in 2012, featured the name and photo of Mike Knox, an Alberta teenager killed by an impaired driver in 1999. In 2013, 40 new decals were added to trailers, telling the story of Keisha Trudel, a teen from Fort Smith, NWT, who was killed in an impaired driving crash in 2008. In 2014, 40 decals were introduced featuring the story of Brad and Krista Howe, a husband and wife who were killed by an impaired driver in 2010. They left behind five young children. With hundreds of trucks and drivers, the trailers provide a unique, effective and ongoing way of delivering a life-saving message to thousands of motorists every day. The response has been tremendous. The company has received countless messages, photos, and phone calls from people who see the trailers and are moved to contact them. Some people share their own stories of family members, friends, colleagues or acquaintances who were injured or killed by an impaired driver, while others simply want to say thank you. Now, RTL-Westcan is proud to continue its impactful awareness initiative with a new decal, to be introduced in the spring of 2017. The new decal features the name and photo of Danille Kerpan, a 25-year-old Saskatchewan woman who was killed by an impaired driver in 2014. The decals will be added to 40 trailers, further expanding the sober driving and Call 911 message. Danille’s photo and the message will be especially important and poignant in Saskatchewan, which is one of the jurisdictions with highest rates of impaired driving in the country. RTL-Westcan believes that Danille’s story, the stories of other victims of impaired driving, and the loss and grief experienced by their loved ones, serves as a powerful reminder to everyone on the roads about the importance of sober driving. By sharing their stories, RTL-Westcan is helping to prevent future tragedies and ensure that the victims of impaired driving are never forgotten.

First Louise Joanne Twerdy Leadership Bursary AwardedMADD Canada is pleased to announce Jordan McCool-Morin as the first recipient of the Louise Joanne Twerdy Leadership bursary.

The $8,000 bursary is named in memory of Louise Twerdy, a former National President and Chapter Services Manager (Western Region) for MADD Canada. Louise passed away in 2014 following a courageous battle against cancer. The bursary will be awarded to one student each year who aspires to the same leadership, dedication and compassion for which Louise was so well-respected and loved. In 2008, Jordan’s mother and grandmother were killed in an impairment-related crash in Manitoba. His father and sister were injured. Jordan was following in the vehicle behind and witnessed the crash. He was just 16 at the time. Jordan is currently studying at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and also dedicates some of his time to volunteering with MADD Toronto.

Louise Joanne Twerdy

Jordan McCool-Morin accepts the first Louise Joanne Twerdy Leadership Bursary from MADD Canada Outgoing National President Angeliki Souranis and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Murie at MADD Canada’s National Leadership Conference in September.

Louise Twerdy’s family honoured Conference delegates with special stories about Louise and introduced the first-ever Louise Joanne Twerdy Leadership Bursary. From left to right, Louise’s sister, Dianne Bélanger; brother-in-law, Guy Bélanger; husband Brian; and stepson Brandon.

In addition to the Louise Joanne Twerdy Leadership Bursary, five other bursaries of $4,000 were awarded to: Étiene Fortier, Brayden Hearne, Ashley MacInnes, Jeremy O`Dell, and Hilary Renwick.

The MADD Canada Bursary Fund is for Canadian students who have themselves been severely injured, or who have had an immediate family member (mother, father, legal guardian, sister or brother) killed or severely injured in an impaired-related crash, and who are pursuing any full-time, post-secondary educational program that is approved by a provincial Ministry of Education.

The application deadline for MADD Canada’s 2017-2018 bursary competition is May 31, 2017. See the Youth Bursary Fund page at madd.ca for more information and an application form.

Project Red Ribbon donation boxes will be displayed at LCBO checkout counters until December 31. As part of LCBO’s annual Giving Back In Our Community campaign, customer service representatives will also invite patrons to add a $2, $5 or $10 donation to their purchase to benefit MADD Canada.

The funds raised support the production and delivery of MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program to educate students about the risks of impaired driving. With motor vehicle crashes being the leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and more than half of those crashes involving alcohol and/or drugs, it is crucial to have a dialogue with youth about the dangers of impaired driving and provide them the knowledge and tools to make safe and sober driving decisions.

Thanks to LCBO’s Giving Back In Our Community campaign, MADD Canada can deliver its School Assembly Program to approximately 500,000 Ontario students each year, at no cost to the students or the schools.

Student Survey Shows Impact of School Assembly Programyouth who see MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program come away with effective and lasting knowledge about the dangers and impact of impaired driving, a new student survey has shown.

MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program presents students with information and best practices to help them understand the issue of alcohol and/or drug-impaired driving. Following the 2015-2016 School Assembly Program, titled 24 Hours, Environics Research Group conducted a survey of 6,548 students to assess the program’s effectiveness in influencing students’ attitudes and behaviours around alcohol and/or drug consumption and driving. A follow-up survey was completed by 846 students three months later to track how opinions and behaviours may have changed in that time.

The survey results indicate that MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program continues to be impactful and informative.

• The majority of students (87%) said it is not okay to drink any amount before driving.

• After watching the program, most students agreed that serious consequences could occur if they drank and drove, including getting into a car crash (89%), getting injured or killed (88%), harming relationships with family (85%), the police finding out (84%) and harming relationships with friends or social lives (76%). In the follow-up survey, these levels remained the same or slightly higher, indicating the messages have a lasting effect.

• Immediately following the presentation, 75% said they always plan how to get home after parties where drinking or drugs was involved. In the follow-up survey, that increased to 82%.

• The survey results show that attitudes towards marijuana remain a challenge. While most students understood that smoking marijuana would impair a driver’s abilities, they perceived it to be less impairing than other drugs such as cocaine or ecstasy.

Monthly Giving Benefits Donors and CharitiesIt’s no surprise that charitable organizations love monthly-giving programs. Monthly donations have tremendous benefits for charities; they are less expensive, require less administrative resources; and allow for more effective planning and budgeting for mission-related projects and initiatives.

But monthly giving is a highly beneficial option for donors too. For the many Canadians who make their charitable donations at year-end, monthly giving takes the anxiety and rush out of the mix. You can take your time deciding which charities to support in this manner, and you never have to worry about that year-end charitable tax receipt deadline. It’s also easier on the pocketbook, because your donation can be broken down into monthly payments, rather than one lump sum. You’ll feel good giving all-year round and avoid the post-holiday cash crunch.

Start the New Year off right and take the anxiety out of charity giving – consider joining MADD Canada’s monthly donor program now.

Add Alcohol-Free MADD Virgin Drinks to Your Holiday Guest and Gift Lists! The busiest time of the year for entertaining is fast approaching, a time when family and friends unite and celebrate. It is also a time of year when the risk of impaired driving is high.

This year, MADD Virgin Drinks and Shoppers Drug Mart have made it easier than ever to be the perfect host or guest. Visit your local Shoppers and stock up on MADD Virgin Drinks for Christmas and New Year’s. Everyone will appreciate your thoughtfulness, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that 5% of the sale goes to MADD Canada to support the ongoing effort to end impaired driving.

Getting Rid Of Your Old Vehicle Has Never Been So Easy!Do you have an old vehicle that needs to go? Consider donating it through one of MADD Canada’s vehicle donation partners!

Car Heaven, Charity Cars and Donate A Car Canada have all added MADD Canada to the list of charitable organizations for which they collect donations. You’ll have peace of mind knowing you disposed of your old vehicle in an environmentally friendly way and you’ll receive a tax receipt. Not only that, your donation benefits MADD Canada.

Visit our vehicle donation partner web sites for details on how the programs work.

Be sure to add MADD Virgin Drinks to the guest and the gift lists! Let’s make roads safer for all of us. The alcohol-free product line includes sparkling wine, beer, mojitos and more. You can purchase yours at Shoppers Drug Mart and other participating retailers, or online www.maddvirgindrinks.com.
