Survey – Background and Scope

Question: Is project management seen as a value creator in strategy delivery?

Areas of focus

• Strategy – the link between strategy and delivery in PM context

• Governance (PMO) – roles and benefits of the PMO in corporate structure

• Benefits – is project management delivering value?

• Skills – appetite for training and skills development

• Performance – high performance teams

Respondents

960 responses from a wide variety of project management professionals (Close to 1/3 Respondents from Government)

Survey: General Findings

1. Project Management valued to deliver corporate strategy;

2. PM Maturity generally low. Significant investment envisaged to improve internal systems, skills and links to corporate strategy;

3. Leadership and communication skills high on agenda of project managers;

4. Value PM provides needs to be directly linked to measurable benefits realised from projects.

Survey Results: Focus 1 Strategy

“How well aligned are executives with project management? ”

• 90% organisations recognise projects as valid way of delivering strategy (53% consistently)

• Project visibility by Executive team low (only 55%).

• Correlates to lack of consistent systems to track projects (only 35%)

• Only 42% say benefits from projects are being measured

Where should accountability for benefits management sit? What is the role of the project

manager?

• Organisations making strong investment made in Project Management capability -82% investing in PM training;

• Leadership becoming core competency of project management (70% respondents investing in Leadership training);

• Qualification based training in highest demand followed closely by AIPM certification;

Should competency standards in Project Management (e.g Diploma in Project Management) be updated to

reflect leadership competencies

• Dealing with Stress is “very” important to being a successful project manager (Over 80%);

• 42% organisations do NOT have programs in place to adequately support project managers deal with stress
