Apple, Sr. will annou nce a new program to aid those afflicted with Alzheimer's, Dementia, Autism, Down Syndrome, or similar disorders which cause wandering and disorientation. The Program, called Pr oject Lifesaver is a nationally recognized system in which a transmitter is attached to a client’s wrist or ankle. This transmitter emits an FM frequency which can be located by Sheriff’s rescue personnel using specialized equipment. According to Project Lifesaver International, today, 4.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. This is estimated to reach 15 million by 2030. Of these people, 59% develop the tendency to wander and, 72% of these wander repeatedly. This program will limit the amount of time and money spent searching for a lost person. Most importantly, it will enable Deputy Sheriff’s and other rescuers to find the client much faster than ordinary methods, thus lessening the chances of danger or injury. Offering this program to the community provides caregivers with peace of mind. The program will be supported through forfeiture funds acquired as the result of drug, gambling and other criminal activities and will be available everywhere in Albany Count y. There will be a wide representation of partnering officials present at this press conference including political dignitaries such as Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy, Albany County District Attorney David Soares, Albany City Mayoral candidate Kathy Sheehan, Frank J. Commisso, Majority Leader, Albany County Legislature, Shawn M. Morse, Chairman, Albany County Legislature and Berne Town Supervisor Kevin Crosier, as well as potential victims and supporting organizations.
