Abstract: Water jet cutting technique is an advanced and innovative technology that is rapidly dominating over conventional machining methods such as milling and laser cutting, etc. In contrast to its laser counterpart, it can cut a variety of materials accurately and precisely without causing thermal problems such as excessive heat buildup causing melting of the target material, etc. This project presents the design and fabrication of a prototype of a low cost water jet CNC machine system. The machine operates at a pressure of 3000 Psi (206.8 Bar) and has the ability to cut an inch thick Aluminum sheet. The water pressure is achieved by connecting a 15 horsepower induction motor to a crankshaft water pump. A significant amount of work is done on designing the jet nozzle and performing various analysis on it including computational fluid analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and structural analysis using ANSYS software. The nozzle head assembly moves over the working bed along the Cartesian coordinates with the help of three stepper motors. The path planning of the head is carried out in KCAM software. Moreover, a Windows based graphical user interface (GUI) is made that acquire, display and store the data generated from various sensors present in the system. This data is processed and useful information such as motor speed, voltage levels, and temperature, etc. are displayed in real time.
