MAC, relaying & routing procedures

In an ad hoc topology, the access protocol can be :

Fully distributed : no particular node used for synchronization or resource allocation Pseudo distributed : any node can be used to synchronize the network and allocate resources

Fully distributed MAC protocol (SEBROMA, French RNRT ERABLE program ) : Use of different THCs, among which 1 for common signaling channel (THsign) Receiver oriented: potential receivers send RTC messages (Ready To Communicate) on THsign After reception of a RTC, RTS / CTS packets exchange on a randomly chosen code. Possibility to differentiate packets priorities (by using sub windows)

MAC, relaying & routing procedures

Pseudo distributed MAC protocol : Adaptation of the IEEE 802.15.3 standard (IST project U.C.A.N.) to impulse-based UWB Suppression of the Contention Access Period (because of clear channel assessment problem) Addition of a relaying possibility at MAC level (intra-piconet) Special procedures added for distance measurement, information can be used for routing MAC implementation on a Software/Hardware demonstration platform

Further developments/studies foreseen : Other fully distributed protocols to comply with 802.15.SG4a expectations (low complexity, size

and power consumption) Improvements of low-level relaying and routing (delay constraints)

• Wide range of needs for location-aware, low data rate and low-power applications (civil and military)

• Objectives of Thales Coms. – Wireless Activity:– Help and support the standardization for such applications

– Bring our experience in UWB (PHY-MAC close interactions)

– Promote a solution for efficient networking: • low range, potentially large areas fast relaying and routing• high number of devices fast deployment and reconfigurabilty
