Report• You will be assigned a colony to complete a report about. The

report should be 1 page typed double-spaced, using Times New Roman font and size 12. Facts that must be included are the following: – The government and leaders: Who was in charge? Was there a particular

document that held record of how the colony was run? – The economy: How did this colony make money? This can vary based on

the regions of that colony.– The geography- What physical features are located in this colony? How

would this affect where cities and towns were located?– Why it was founded? Can be found in the podcasts from class.– Interesting people from the Colonial Area. What makes them

interesting?– Culture- Food, clothing, religion, ect.

• Do NOT use modern state facts. You are looking at the colony not the state.

Example: Delaware was the first state of the United States. Before it was a state though, it was a colony. This colony belong to the

King of England.

The Dutch (people from the Netherlands) first settled Delaware in 1631, although all of the original settlers were killed in a disagreement with local Indians. However in 1638, the Swedes (people from Sweden) set up a colony and trading post at Fort Christina in the northern part of Delaware. Today, Fort Christina is called Wilmington.

In 1651, the Dutch reclaimed the area and built a fort near present day New Castle. By 1655, the Dutch had forcibly removed the Swedes from the area and reincorporated Delaware into their empire. In 1664, however, the British removed the Dutch from the east coast.

After William Penn was granted the land that became Pennsylvania in 1682, he persuaded the Duke of York to lease him the western shore of Delaware Bay so that his colony could have an outlet to the sea. The Duke agreed and henceforth, Penn’s original charter included the northern sections of present-day Delaware, which became known as “The Lower Counties on the Delaware”.

The decision by the Duke angered Lord Baltimore, the first proprietary governor of Maryland, who believed he had the rights to it. A lengthy and occasionally violent 100-year conflict between Penn’s heirs and Baltimore’s heirs was finally settled when Delaware’s border was defined in 1750 and when the Maryland/Pennsylvania and Maryland/Delaware borders were defined as part of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1768.

In Delaware you can find many beautiful rivers including the Delaware, Muderkill, Nanticoke, and St. Jones River. You can also find the Delaware Bay here too. In the southern part of Delaware, there is over 30,000 acres of wetlands. The major cities include Dover and Wilmington. Most cities can be found near the water because the water serves as a means of transportation and trade routes.

These wetlands also allowed for the colony to prosper through farming. Grain, Rice and Indigo were commonly grown and harvested amongst the colonists. Colonists also had a large lumber industry because it was once covered in forests, obviously this is not true of modern-day Delaware. Farming is still a major part of the Delaware culture.

Many bizarre foods come from his area as well including muskrat which was a delicacy in the 1600s. Delaware was also a the first all white colony in America, granted that changed as slavery became more popular in the New World. However, even at the peak of the slave trade, Delaware’s slave population was only 2% of the colony.

Overall Delaware is a unique colony. This colony was lead by head strong men. Therefore, it is of no surprise that Delaware was the first colony to become a state.

Advertisement• Part 2 ~ AdvertisementOnce you have completed the report you should have good background

knowledge of what is so great about your colony. You need to create an advertisement persuading people to visit, or settle, in your colony. The advertisement will be completed on a single copy sheet of paper. When making your advertisement be as creative as you can . remember, you want to attract people! Guidelines for the advertisement include:

* Must be colorful – absolutely NO PENCIL will be allowed. * No white may be left on the advertisement (unless it is being used for

something that needs to be the color white).* Include the name of your colony and the year it was founded.
