Background

– By 2025, Moscow will grow 2,5 times in size, produce 25-30% of Russia’s GDP and 20% of Russian population will live in Moscow agglomeration (30M). Saint-Petersburg demonstrate similar tendencies in population growth.

– Moscow produces 25 Mt/y waste, >80% of which goes to landfills and the rest is burned in 3 existing waste burners, or recycled (negligible). Currently, over 60% of landfills around Moscow are already full and remaining will be filled within the next 5 years.

– Besides, all landfills located within new territories, recently added to Moscow are closing now.

– The city government aims to utilize or burn 60-65% of the city waste by 2015, with the rest going to landfills.

– An investment program was announced to built waste processing and waste utilization plants on the territory of New Moscow.
