Transcript of Project Context Technology – Mobile devices – Internet – GPS Raw Data – Property appraiser:...
Project Context
• Technology– Mobile devices– Internet– GPS
• Raw Data– Property appraiser: home value, GIS dimensions of
lot and house, neighborhood, add-ons, sales history, etc.
Property Appraiser Data
Chris Meyers
Background
• Property data is publicly available by law– May not be digitally available
• Leon County is digitally available• RAW Data: home value, GIS dimensions of lot and
house, neighborhood, add-ons, sales history, etc.
Motivation
• Technology increase quality of life– Aid in decision making– Answer questions– Save time
Queries & Views
• Hand in hand• Views are the most important– Design the views and the queries will become easy
• Two paths when developing views– Rigid– Flexible
Where to start
• Research how existing property data is presented.
• Role play/use case– Parameters: single, married, family, income, new
to the city– Will help to extract• Queries• Data views
Use case #1
• Recently married with possible kids in the future and a joint income of $70,000 in city that I currently have lived in for 4 years.
Questions• How much should I spend on my home?– 30 % of income
• What houses are for sale < $150,000 and are at least 3 bedroom 2 bath?
• How much are houses in this neighborhood worth?– Filter only comparable houses
• How much have comparable houses in this neighborhood sold for?
• What’s the crime like in this neighborhood, region, street?
House for Sale
Compare
• $125,000• 3 bed 2 bath• 1,242 sq. ft• .11 acres• Built in 2006
Where is the house?

Where is the house?
Simplify the Process
• Present existing data in a more user-friendly manner

Find: Square foot | Price | Location1200 <= $120,000 == Street
1230 sq ft. $100,000 YES
1200 sq ft. $110,000 YES
1100 sq ft. $120,000 YES
Problem
• Google Street View doesn’t support overlays• Generally a hard problem
Solution
• Take a frontal “snapshot” of each house on the current street
• Present them as a slideshow with data overlaid
$125,0002,000 sq. ft.2 bed 2 bath
$130,0002,200 sq. ft.2 bed 2 bath
$122,0001,930 sq. ft.2 bed 2 bath
Break down for class
• Part 1: Insert the property appraiser information into an Android database. Consider a few common queries when designing the schema. (See notes on this slide)
• Part 2: Working with input: – slide bar to select the price range– List to select neighborhood• Sort list alphabetically or [geographically]
Break down for class
• Part 3: Display query results• Part 4: Overlay data onto street view• Part 5: GPS radius based• Part 6: Optimization– Store DB on server– Cache larger and larger radius
Looking back
• Some features that seem useful at first may become annoying. Remember, our goal is to help the user make decisions, not make decisions for them. We don’t want to limit the data that the user can access.
The End
Questions ?
Brainstorming
• What can you do with the data?• Data presentation– Spatial, price, date
• Data storage/access– Remote/local, flat/db, compressed
• Queries supported– By price, date, price and date– Will queries be limited by data layout?
Presentation Context
• Motivation• Background– Property, not so much mobile devices
• Possible queries• Possible views• Data considerations• Ideas???
