41 Cooper Square, New YorkConstruction began in 2006 on a new academic center for Cooper Union in lower Manhattan, an institution with a large foot print in the area dating back to 1859 for the advancement of science and art. The stakeholders looked to Thom Mayne and associates of Morphosis in Los Angeles, to build a state of art new campus for future Cooper Union students.

Nelson was invited early in the design stage, for input on ceiling and wall systems that provided a high degree of acoustics, long lifespan and ease of maintenance. During the ideas exchange between Morphosis and Nelson heating and cooling this massive 175,000 sqft., nine-story building was of greatest importance to the client. To support Nelson with our acoustical knowledge, a partner (Twa Panel Systems, Edmonton), entered in the development process to lend their expertise in the field of radiant heating and cooling. By completion of the project 50,000 sqft. of combined acoustical and radiant ceiling panels were delivered, on time and on budget for virtually all classroom and laboratories throughout the building.

As a result of the close engagement between the Architect, General Contractor (FJ Sciame) and Nelson, we were invited to provide an exciting new woven mesh ceiling and wall panel system for a large conference room within the building. Which we designed and delivered as well. The new Cooper Union Campus was completed and opened in September 2009 to much fanfare and acclaim from design critiques around the World.
