Dick Diver, a handsome American psychologist in his thirties, married to Nicole Diver- one of his mental patients.Rosemary Hoyt, a beautiful eighteen-year-old movie starlet, who falls in love in Dick.
SettingSettingThe setting is at the French Riviera
The plot and its conflict Dick has an affair with Rosemary, and his
marriage to Nicole starts to fail over time. Dick himself starts to fall apart both physically and emotionally, and he develops a drinking problem. At the end of the novel, Dick moves back to America and his condition starts to improve.
Nicole Warren- Dick's beautiful mental patient (and then wife). Her family is very wealthy and she likes to travel all over Europe and live extravagantly. Nicole is always slipping back and forth between sanity and insanity. After her marriage to Dick fails, she marries Tommy Barban
Rosemary: Dick's younger lover. She is a beautiful actress who has many boyfriends. She tells Dick that he is the only one she has ever really loved. Dick thinks he loves her, but then realizes she is too immature for him.
