The Columbia University

The Columbia University in the New-York City, informally Columbia University is a private research university in the

New-York City and a member of the Ivy League.

Columbia is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New-York,

the fifth oldest in the United States, and the one of the country’s nine Colonial Colleges, founded before

the American Revolution.

It was founded in 1754 as King’s College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain, and is one of only three United

States universities to have been founded under such authority.

Nowadays the university is very difficult to get into, because the competition is known to be

very high.

Columbia’s motto: “In lumine Tuo ridebimus lumen” (Latin) and “In the light we will see the

light” (Psalm).

The University annually administers the Pulitzer Prize and has been affiliated with more Nobel

Prize laureates than any other academic institution in the world

As 2009, Columbia’s library system includes over 10, 4 million volumes, making it the eight largest library system and fifth largest collegiate library

system in the United States.
