Project Information
Project summary:
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) on behalf of the Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID) is proposing to install accent lighting on the Francis Case Memorial Bridge span and supporting piers, creating a visual experience for night time visitors to the SW Waterfront.
The proposed accent lighting of the Francis Case Memorial Bridge has two elements: a gentle vertical wash of the bridge piers and a blue horizontal LED strip extending the full expanse of the bridge. A series of segmented blue monochrome tube fixtures will form a continuous line along the bottom of the flange on the south elevation of the bridge. LED light fixtures will be installed under the bridge structure in pairs to highlight each pier by grazing the structure and highlighting the texture of the stone and the craftsmanship of the stonework. A linear symmetric louver will be installed on select light fixtures to minimize direct visible glare and reduce site lines to the lighting element. These light fixtures will illuminate piers which span from the bridge abutment on East Potomac Park continues to the abutments and pier immediately before the I-395 highway.

Initial Mock-Up
As a result of the initial mock-up, the design team determined that the light level on the stone surface would be set between 50% and 90% of the full light output with color temperatures in the range of 3000K to 4000K.

Mock-Up – Pier Downlights
As a result of the initial mock-up, the design team determined to add shrouds to shield the light fixtures to reduce the direct visible glare and focus the light on the bridge piers as the accent.
