KIOSK
The Kiosk opens with a lot of useful information on the main screen. The CTA
logo is included at the top to adequately represent the efforts put in by the
company in designing this wonderful Kiosk.
The blue scrolling marquee lists current events, weather information and any
emergency information.
As with our first project, we have included all main controls on the left. They are
made big and highly visible. The City map is displaying by default and the
restaurants and important office buildings/attractions are listed on the map using
buttons and icons. These buttons can be clicked to bring up more details on the
associated place.
The compass is placed on the map to provide the user with a general sense of
orientation. It is assumed that the Kiosk is generally installed such that the user is
always facing north. However where this is not possible, the compass can be
properly oriented before installing the kiosk.
Clicking on any of the restaurants on the map brings up more information on the
restaurants – like menus, address and phone numbers etc.
The map in the center has two levels of zooming. The Zoom controls switch
between a detailed view (As seen above) and a larger more general view as
shown below:
This larger view of the area shows where the user is with respect to the rest of
the city. We believe the level of generality depicted above is sufficient for the
user to get a bird’s eye view.
The Current events screen brings up information about on-going events in the
city like road shows, conferences etc. The screen gives information about the
day’s events as well as events planned for the week ahead.
The Train Information button on the main screen brings up the following screen
at Madison Station:
This station is common for 4 different lines, so the user can view the schedule
information for any one of these.
Choosing the Orange line for example, will bring up this screen:
The schedule information is shown in a way consistent with the CTA standards
(In fact this information is dynamically pulled from the CTA website so that it is
the latest version).
You will notice a “Show Map” button on the schedule screen. This button will
bring up a “Line map” of the Orange Line.
This map is helpful in identifying the next station and the general direction in
which the user has to travel in order to reach his/her destination. The “Show
Schedule” will take the user back to the schedule.
The Call Cab function will assist a user to call a cab service from the station. The
steps for calling a cab are neatly outlined; they are followed by a button that will
execute the first step.
The Call Cab button will initiate a call to a central control station that will send out
calls to all the cabbies and the nearest cab will respond to the call. A call number
is then assigned to the user. The system is completely automated without
needing the user to actually talk to any cab company people.
Once the call is initiated, the user can cancel it at anytime before the call number
is assigned.
In the screen below, the call ended successfully and a cab is on its way. Your call
number is displayed.
The Kiosk has blue tooth built into it, so any user with a portable Blue Tooth
enabled device can download information displayed on the central portion of the
screen. Information that can be downloaded includes maps, text and any HTML
displayed from websites. Pictures can also be downloaded.
The popup screen detects any bluetooth enabled devices and lets you select
your device among them. The information currently displayed on the central
portion of the screen is now downloaded into your mobile device. The transfer
can be cancelled at any time.
The Languages screen allows the user to select from a variety of languages for
the kiosk interface.
English is the default language. However, the user can choose to pick other
languages. The Language setting is reset to English after 20 seconds of
inactivity.
The user of this kiosk also has the ability to call emergency number 911 right
from the main screen. On touching this button, a call to 911 will be initiated as
shown below:
As always, the call can be cancelled at any time. We are assuming that the kiosk
is armed with a microphone and speaker set for communication.
Screen Saver Mode:
The Kiosk goes into a “Screen saver mode” upon 20 seconds of inactivity. The
screen saver displays ads, and events in the city.
