From Ed and Rick

At the BROADBENT INSTITUTE we make it our mission each and every day to strive for the more democratic, green and equal Canada we all know is possible. Since our founding in 2011 we’ve been working hard to create a new kind of hard-hitting and effective voice to enable the progressive movement. Thanks to our supporters, we have some important gains to point to. As we gear up for the next round of challenges, we’d like you to join us in a new endeavour: the Progress Council. The Council is made up of people like you from all walks of life – people from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, working and retired, who care about the impact politics can have on everyday life, and who want our country to move forward, not back. As a member of the Progress Council, you will receive exclusive benefits; direct communications, complementary events, personal engagement, and special recognition. More importantly, your membership in the Council helps us to build our internal capacity and develop the financial stability it takes to advance progressive ideas and train the next generation of leaders. Please read this booklet through and take a look at the membership options. We hope you join today!

Best wishes,

Ed Broadbent Rick SmithChair Executive Director

The BROADBENT INSTITUTE is an independent, non-partisan organization championing progressive change through the promotion of democracy, equality and sustainability, and the training of a new generation of leaders. We are proud of Canada’s tradition as a diverse, fair, just, and inclusive society. These values matter to us today and they matter to our future. The vast majority of Canadians share these values. At the BROADBENT INSTITUTE, we believe that the core principles and collective efforts that have made us who we are as a country can inform new ways of thinking and new approaches to government to equip us to address the challenges facing Canadians. With offices in 4 provinces and a database more than 350,000 strong, hundreds of thousands of regular readers of our blogs and reports, and millions of readers on social media; we have grown to become one of Canada’s most influential NGOs with a robust network that reaches into communities from coast to coast to coast.

About the Broadbent Institute

The conservative movement in Canada grows more dangerous every day. Whether it’s Andrew Scheer, Maxime Bernier, Doug Ford, or Jason Kenney, the people running the organizations behind their campaigns have stepped up their game to influence Canadians. Through proposed legislation and aggressive communications strategies, conservative forces seek to roll back hard-fought progressive gains in our country and prevent us from improving our social systems. Over the last few decades, an effective network of right-wing leaders have built a robust conservative infrastructure.

Through the creation of think tanks and third-party advocacy groups, their work is designed to entrench their damaging agenda. Organizations such as the Fraser Institute, Manning Centre and Rebel Media have all adopted the anti-progressive tactics of their U.S. counterparts. And new groups like Ontario Proud and BC Proud are flooding social media with their negative messages. Though the forces arrayed against us are vast, the good news is our efforts are having an effect. A senior advisor to the Manning Centre called the BROADBENT INSTITUTE “the single greatest threat to conservatism in Canada.” And you will often find the Fraser Institute, Sun News, and the Rebel Media singling out the BROADBENT INSTITUTE as a key opponent.

The Growing Conservative Threat

Regrettably we are seeing what has been

called the TRUMP Effect here in Canada - an

emboldened and increasingly dangerous

rar-right. The best example of this is Ezra

Levant’s Rebel Media which is working

with American counterparts like Steve

Bannon’s Breitbart to bring this Trump

styled “Fake News” to our country. They

spread misinformation to skew perspectives,

and drive wedges in our society by taking

advantage of people’s misfortune and

economic frustration.

This new threat to our Canadian social

cohesion will have a direct impact on our

future elections and the types of policies and

campaigns political parties put forward. It is

imperative that progressive Canadians reject

this trend and stand up to be counted. The

BROADBENT INSTITUTE doesn’t shy away

from this fight. We go toe-to-toe with the

far-right every day, pushing back on their

inflammatory rhetoric and bigotry. We won’t

rest until we achieve the “better world” that

Tommy Douglas spoke of.

Our WorkThe INSTITUTE’S work is making a significant impact though these four key areas:

1 Policy. We are increasingly shaping the country’s political

discourse and influencing policy-makers through solid research that promotes good ideas and challenges the conservative frame. Our research agenda is informed by a network of diverse, multi-disciplinary Policy Fellows – over 65 of Canada’s leading academic and policy experts who have agreed to contribute their knowledge and analysis to further the Institute’s agenda. As a result, you can expect regular articles on our popular blog and in various media focusing on incisive and timely analysis and policy solutions. The Progress Summit is our signature annual three-day conference in Ottawa that solidifies the INSTITUTE’S role as a convenor, bringing together some the leading thinkers and activists from across the country and around the world.

2 Training. Building a more progressive Canada demands

committed and effective leaders. The Broadbent Institute has made training a top priority of ours from the start. We seek to build backbone for progressive organizing in Canada by supporting the development of a new generation of leaders, particularly where power is building and we can contribute to wins – whether in issue-based or election campaigns.

We recognize that support for local organizing is needed more than ever, especially as we rise to the challenge of confronting growing support for a dangerous far-right ideology in communities across Canada. We know that people need to see real, tangible material gains in their lives to build resilience against messages that seek to divide us across our differences.

The INSTITUTE’S Training and Leadership program has delivered training sessions for thousands of people in communities across the country. Partnering with labour, environmental, human rights and other organizations, these training opportunities have supported a variety of campaigns at the provincial, federal, and municipal level by building skills in organizing, campaign strategy, communications and fundraising.

In the past year the INSTITUTE has launched two brand new training initiatives designed to make a real impact on the ground in local communities:

1.OnlineLeadershipSchool:Making training available to everyone, we offer digital programming for activists and organizers from anywhere in the country;

2.ThePowerLab:Introduces a new innovative model - one that is for and by the people, who are experimenting with different approaches to building economic and demo- cratic power in their communities. Focusing on building equitable rather than traditional forms of economic development, the PowerLab will work to support com- munity organizers to generate local power by amplifying community voices in decision making processes. The PowerLab will be an incubator of community organizers working to influence legislation, policy and/or project agendas held by elected officials and public institutions.

3 ‌SPECIALEVENTSANDAWARDS.‌Each year the BROADBENT INSTITUTE convenes like-minded people

and organizations through a series of special events across the country. For too long progressive movements have been siloed from each other. Instead of working

together on similar issues and shared goals the focus has been on their own projects. We try hard to change that. Our marquee event is our annual policy and training conference, the Progress Summit. Each year we bring hundreds of like-minded people together from all walks of life and from all sorts of professions for three days of discussion, networking, idea generation, and socializing. The synergies and tangible benefits that emerge are fantastic. The BROADBENT INSTITUTE uses the ideas and energy to focus our activities for the next year. And we create a venue for organizations to coordinate their messaging and their priorities. All ProgressCouncil members receive a complementary Delegate Pass to the Progress Summit each year, and exclusive invitations to other special events across the country.

The BROADBENT INSTITUTE is also home to three very special awards that are given out each year to persons who have most impressively advanced a progressive agenda:

JackLaytonProgressPrize: awarded annually to an individual or organization who has run a particularly noteworthy political or issue campaign reflecting the ideals exemplified by Layton, including justice, sustainability and democracy.

CharlesTaylorPolicyPrizeforExcellenceInPolicyResearch: awarded annually to a researcher whose work has made an important contribution to policy debates relevant to building a more socially just Canada.

EllenMeiksinsWoodPrize&Lecture: given annually to an academic, labour activist or writer who has made an outstanding contribution in political theory, social or economic history, human rights, or sociology. It acknowledges Ellen’s legacy of historical scholarship on political thought.

4 NEWS. PressProgress.ca is a digital news service launched

by the Broadbent Institute in 2013. PressProgress has quickly become Canada’s most-shared source for progressive news and information through “gaining readership and credibility” according to the Toronto Star.

As digital media transforms Canada’s news industry from top-to-bottom, PressProgress is working hard to fill in the gaps by providing timely reporting and rapid-response fact-checks on issues that matter to progressives, while shining a bright light on right-wing politics in Canada with original, investigative reporting. PressProgress’ original reporting has been cited by every news outlet in Canada as well as major US news sources like the Washington Post and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show.

PressProgress’ online audience is now larger than most newspapers in Canada, reaching millions of readers each year and its stories now rank among the top 10 most shared in Canada on a week-to-week basis.

One-in-three Canadians has now visited the website. PressProgress’ coverage of the rise of Doug Ford accounted for four of the top five most-shared stories in the lead up to the 2018 Ontario election. During the 2017 BC election, PressProgress was the most shared news outlet every single week throughout the election period.

As Canadian newspapers pull back on covering local news and labour reporting, PressProgress’is moving in the opposite direction, hiring additional journalists to expand coverage of regional news stories in British Columbia and Alberta to make sure Canadians know about important stories on progressive issues like social and economic inequality, the transition to a green economyand defending Canada’s democratic institutions.just
